Three years is the most common experience requirement on an accounting job ad, and 39.2% of the 35,089 live postings that state a number ask for five years or more, per Audit Friendly data as of August 2026. What got me is what those years are worth once you hold the job title still: senior accountant postings asking two years of experience carry a median advertised pay of $89,670, and the ones asking five carry $92,500. Three more years of your life, $2,830.

What do accounting job postings ask for?

We pulled this from our Audit Friendly job board, 60,827 active accounting and finance postings across 20,171 companies, and 58.1% of them put a years number in writing. Three is the most common ask, then five, then two, clustering on round numbers the way you'd expect from a requirement nobody measured before they typed it.

The same title asks wildly different things, too. Of the 2,101 active senior accountant postings that state a number, 13.1% want two years, 35.4% want three and 30.0% want five. Same seat, same work, and the ask swings by a factor of two depending on who wrote the ad.

Does asking for more years mean more pay?

Pooled across every posting that states both a years requirement and a real pay range, yes, and it looks enormous. Median advertised pay runs $65,000 at one year (n=1,652), $85,000 at three (n=3,048), $107,500 at five (n=3,336), $137,350 at seven (n=832) and $171,000 at ten (n=717), per Audit Friendly data, August 2026. That is 2.6x from one year to ten, and it's the shape every annual salary guide leans on, which is how a whole hell of a lot of people end up believing each year on the job is worth twelve grand.

That curve is mostly a job-mix effect. Ads asking ten years are controller and director ads, ads asking one year are AP and staff accountant ads, so you're looking at the org chart wearing an experience costume.

What happens when you hold the role still?

Most of the premium evaporates. Senior accountant, our biggest cell: $89,670 at two years (n=119), $92,500 at three (n=341), $94,000 at four (n=129), $92,500 at five (n=262). A 3.2% spread across a requirement that more than doubles.

It does pay in some seats, and this is where I'd complicate my own take. Staff accountant rewards time, $65,000 at one year (n=259) climbing to $77,700 at five (n=106), about 19.5%. Payroll specialist runs $60,000 at two years (n=90) up to $80,000 at five (n=98). And controller has a real cliff, sitting at $120,000 for a five-year ask (n=214) before jumping to $148,750 at seven (n=128) and $170,000 at eight (n=89). So years matter, they just matter at specific rungs rather than smoothly all the way up.

Is the title worth more than the years?

Mostly, yeah. A staff accountant ad asking five years advertises a median $77,700 (n=106). A senior accountant ad asking two years advertises $89,670 (n=119). The title with three fewer years attached pays $11,970 more, which is the whole damn ballgame if you're deciding what to chase next.

It breaks in the analyst track, though. Financial analyst ads asking five years sit at $110,000 (n=89), above senior financial analyst ads asking two at $91,200 (n=67), so over there the word senior is doing less work than it does in accounting.

Should you apply when you're short on years?

Apply. When two ads for the same senior accountant seat land within $3,000 of each other and one asks two years while the other asks five, those employers are using the number as a screen and letting it do their sorting for free. Being a year or two under the stated ask is not the disqualifier it feels like at 11pm scrolling job boards feeling like shit about your resume, and the pay data says the seat behind both ads is the same seat.

What I'd do is aim one title up rather than one year up. Look at the roles on our job board one level above where you sit, check what that level really pays in the Accounting Job Market Explorer, and get your story straight with our interview prep tool. The years number in the ad is the least interesting thing in it.

FAQ

How many years of experience do accounting jobs require?

Three years is the most common stated requirement, and 39.2% of the 35,089 active accounting postings that state a number ask for five years or more, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026.

How many years of experience do you need to be a senior accountant?

Senior accountant postings most often ask for three years (35.4% of 2,101 postings), with 30.0% asking five years and 13.1% asking two, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026.

Do accounting jobs pay more for more experience?

Pooled across roles, median advertised accounting pay runs from $65,000 at a one-year ask to $171,000 at a ten-year ask, but within a single role the effect shrinks sharply: senior accountant pay moves 3.2% between a two-year and a five-year ask, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026.

Should I apply if I don't meet the experience requirement?

Yes. Senior accountant postings asking two years and five years advertise medians within 3.2% of each other, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026, so the stated number works more as a screening filter than as a description of the job.
