Senior Accountant Jobs in Boston: Pay Is Visible Now, and the Middle Is $96,500
Boston has 64 open senior accountant roles in our data and two-thirds of them show the pay. Here's what the numbers say, who's hiring, and why remote is scarce.

Boston senior accountant postings that show a pay range have a middle of about $96,500 in our data, which sits roughly $6,500 above the national middle of $90,000 for the same title, and two out of three Boston postings now show a number at all. I did not expect that second part, because across all 3,152 active senior accountant postings we track nationally only about half bother to tell you what the job pays, so Boston is quietly doing something the rest of the country mostly isn't.

As of October 2026 we have 64 active senior accountant postings in the Boston area from 54 different employers, 43 of them with salary information, and I want to walk through what those say because the picture is a little more interesting than "Boston pays well, go get one."

How much does a senior accountant make in Boston?

Where a posting lists pay, the typical midpoint lands around $96,500, with the middle half of postings running from roughly $77,000 to $105,000. That spread matters more than the headline number, because the bottom quarter is a different job than the top quarter - the lower end tends to be a smaller company or a nonprofit-flavored shop with a lighter close, and the upper end is where the CPA, the NetSuite chops and the multi-entity work start getting priced in - a lot of this shit sorts itself out once you see the band.

A couple of honest caveats, since I'd rather you trust this than be impressed by it. A listed range is what an employer says it expects to pay, which can drift from your offer letter, and a few postings in any dataset carry a weird outlier (we have one up near $175,000 that I'd bet is a senior-manager role wearing a senior accountant title), so I lean on the middle half and ignore the extremes, because one stray number will get you pissed off at a market that's actually fine. If you want the longer view of how these titles climb, we broke it out in how much each step up the accounting ladder actually pays.

Why are Boston employers showing the salary?

Probably the law, though I can't prove that from postings alone. Massachusetts requires employers with 25 or more employees to disclose a pay range in job postings, and the requirement has applied since October 29, 2025, including remote roles tied to a Massachusetts worksite. Our Boston number, 43 of 64 or about 67%, versus roughly 50% nationally, is exactly what you'd expect to see if that rule is doing its job and also if a few big employers simply decided to be decent. Probably both.

What it means for you is practical: if a Boston posting from an employer with a real headcount doesn't show a range, ask why before you spend an evening tailoring a resume for some bullshit "competitive salary" line. We keep a running look at which states make this easy and which still hide the number in our state-by-state salary transparency breakdown.

What do Boston senior accountant jobs actually ask for?

Here's the skills side of those 64 postings. Excel shows up in 55 of them (86%), which is table stakes, and NetSuite is named in 14 (22%), well ahead of Sage Intacct at 4 and BlackLine at 2. About 41% mention a CPA, and 28% reference public accounting or Big 4 experience, which tells me a decent slice of Boston demand is employers who want someone with audit-firm training but a corporate schedule. If you're weighing whether to chase the credential, I'd read our look at which accounting jobs actually require a CPA first, because most don't and the ones that do pay for it.

Massachusetts licensing is worth knowing if the CPA is on your list. The Board asks for 150 semester hours of education and then a stretch of experience that is shorter if it's public accounting (one to three years) and longer for non-public work (three to nine). Check the state page before you plan around it, because licensing rules move.

Who is hiring senior accountants in Boston, and is any of it remote?

The employer mix is broader than the "Boston means finance and biotech" stereotype. In our current Boston postings you see an insurer, a consumer brand, defense contractors, a university, biotech and even quantum computing, usually one or two openings each, and 54 employers for 64 postings tells you demand is spread thin rather than concentrated in a few big shops. Remote is the weak spot: none of the 64 Boston postings are fully remote, and about a third (22) are explicitly hybrid. If remote matters more to you than the city, the remote senior accountant listings are a better starting point, and the live Boston roles sit on our job board where they stay current instead of going stale in a blog post.

If you want to see how another expensive, CPA-heavy market compares, our write-up of senior accountant jobs in Tampa is a useful contrast, and public accounting firms hiring in the area are worth checking in the firms directory too.

What I'd do if I were job hunting in Boston

I'd start with postings that show a range, because those employers are telling you something about how they operate, and I'd treat the $77,000 to $105,000 band as the real market rather than chasing the one posting at the top. Then I'd get NetSuite exposure of any kind, even a sandbox, since it's the one system name that keeps showing up beyond Excel, and I'd be upfront in interviews about wanting a hybrid schedule if that's what you want, since fully remote simply isn't on the menu here right now.

And build something. Anything. A reconciliation template, a flux workbook, a little AI-assisted close checklist you can actually show someone - hiring managers remember the person who brought an artifact to the interview, and damn few candidates do.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average senior accountant salary in Boston?

Among Boston postings that list pay, the median midpoint is about $96,500 as of October 2026, with the middle half of listings running from roughly $77,000 to $105,000. National postings for the same title center near $90,000.

Do Boston employers have to post salary ranges?

Yes, if they have 25 or more employees with a primary place of work in Massachusetts. The disclosure requirement has been in effect since October 29, 2025, and covers remote roles tied to a Massachusetts worksite, according to the state's pay transparency guidance.

Do you need a CPA to be a senior accountant in Boston?

Not always. About 41% of current Boston senior accountant postings mention a CPA, which means the majority do not require one, though the credential helps with the higher-paying roles.

Are there remote senior accountant jobs in Boston?

In our current data none of the Boston-area senior accountant postings are fully remote, and about a third are hybrid. Remote roles exist nationally, so you may need to widen the search beyond the city.

What software should a Boston senior accountant know?

Excel is nearly universal in these postings (86%), and NetSuite is the most-named accounting system at 22%, followed far behind by Sage Intacct and BlackLine.
