Pull every live tax posting in greater Los Angeles from our Audit Friendly database - 127 of them as of July 2026, out of the 63,000+ active accounting and finance jobs we track - and the ladder basically prices itself. Associates come in around $92,500 at the median, seniors around $100,500, managers jump to $148,100, and senior managers sit just under $200,000, so the pay a little more than doubles between your first tax seat and the senior manager office. I want to walk through what that means if you're climbing it, because the shape of that curve tells you exactly where the leverage is.

What do tax accountants make in Los Angeles?

Here's the ladder from our live postings, using the midpoint of each posted range and only counting jobs that actually publish a number:

  • Tax associate: $92,500 median posted midpoint
  • Tax senior: $100,500
  • Tax manager: $148,100
  • Tax senior manager: $199,475
  • Tax director: $222,500

Two things jump out at me. First, the associate-to-senior bump is small, about eight grand at the median, which honestly tracks with what I hear from people in those seats - the early years are about stacking reps, not stacking pay. Second, the senior-to-manager jump is enormous, nearly $48,000, and the manager-to-senior-manager jump is another $50,000 on top of that. The market pays for the ability to run the work and own the client relationship, and it pays for damn near nothing else at that level. For a sanity check against government data, BLS wage data for the LA metro counts roughly 64,000 accountants and auditors with a mean annual wage of $96,620 - our tax-specific medians sit right in that neighborhood at the junior rungs and blow past it once you hit manager, which is what you'd expect from a specialty that bills the way tax does.

One caveat I'd be lying to skip: some of these rungs are thin samples. The manager number rests on 39 postings with published pay, which is solid, but the director median comes from nine, so treat the top of the ladder as directional. Posted ranges also aren't offers - plenty of employers anchor wide and negotiate inside the band.

Why is the LA data unusually good?

California's pay transparency law forces employers with 15 or more workers to put a range in the posting, and it shows: 66 percent of LA tax postings in our data publish real pay, which beats the hell out of most US metros. We wrote about how much your state decides what you get to see in our piece on salary transparency by state, and LA is one of the markets where you can actually comparison-shop before you apply. Use that. Walking into a negotiation already knowing the market band changes the entire conversation.

Who's actually hiring tax people in LA right now?

The mix is public accounting heavy, which surprises nobody, but the names are worth knowing. BDO leads our LA tax postings with 14 open roles, Crowe has 8, EY has 6 - and then it gets more interesting, because SpaceX has 5 tax openings of its own, which is a reminder that industry tax teams in LA hire real depth, not just a lone tax manager reconciling provisions. Mid-size CPA firms and staffing shops fill out the rest. If you're weighing firm types, our firms directory is built for exactly that comparison.

Do you need a CPA for these jobs?

About 46 percent of LA tax postings require or strongly prefer the CPA, and the share climbs with seniority - half of senior postings and just over half of senior manager postings want it. So you can start without it, and plenty of people do, but the math changes fast once you're aiming at manager. We ran the numbers on this across the whole database in our CPA salary piece, and tax is one of the specialties where the credential most reliably pays for itself.

Can you do LA tax work remotely?

From LA-based postings, mostly no - not one of the 127 is fully remote, though 46 percent offer hybrid, which in practice means busy season in the office and flexibility the rest of the year. Fully remote tax work absolutely exists, it just gets posted without a city attached, so if remote is the goal, skip the metro pages and go straight to our remote tax jobs board.

What I'd do

If you're an associate or senior in LA tax, I'd stop optimizing for the next $8,000 and start optimizing for the manager promotion, because that single step is worth more than five years of incremental raises. Get review experience, get client-facing reps, get the CPA done before you need it. And check the postings themselves - two-thirds of them are showing you the band, so there's no excuse for guessing what you're worth. The live listings, with direct links to employer career pages, are on the Audit Friendly job board, updated daily.
