So when we ranked actual hiring volume across more than 81,000 accounting and finance postings from the last 90 days, the answer genuinely surprised us - because the single biggest accounting employer in Audit Friendly's data, current through June 2026, isn't an accounting firm at all. It's Amazon.
Here's the part nobody tells you when you're picking a career path or a job search strategy: the companies hiring the most accountants are not the ones whose names are on the accounting textbooks.

Look at what's actually on that list. A tech giant and an aerospace manufacturer are out-hiring every Big 4 firm individually. Banks (TD, State Street, BNY Mellon, U.S. Bank, JPMorgan all show up further down) are everywhere. And the accounting firms that are near the top are mostly the mid-tier - Cherry Bekaert, BDO, RSM, Baker Tilly, Crowe, CliftonLarsonAllen - not the famous four.
Why industrials and tech are quietly the biggest accounting employers
It makes sense once you stop thinking about it as "who does accounting" and start thinking about "who has the most money moving around." A company like Amazon or Boeing runs enormous internal finance operations - revenue recognition, cost accounting, financial reporting, treasury, internal audit, the whole stack - across dozens of business units. They don't outsource that to a firm, they build it in-house at scale. So they're constantly hiring accountants, they're just not called accounting companies.

This is the part that actually matters for your career. If you're only applying to accounting firms, you're fishing in maybe a quarter of the pond. The accountants getting hired in the biggest numbers are going to corporate finance teams at companies that make planes, ship packages, move money, and build software.
That's not a knock on public accounting - it's a great training ground and the firms know it. But the instinct to equate "accounting career" with "work at a firm" is leaving a huge chunk of the market invisible to you.
