Half of Finance Workers Telework, So Why Is Only About 1 in 12 Accounting Job Postings Remote?

Half of Finance Workers Telework, So Why Is Only About 1 in 12 Accounting Job Postings Remote?
Roughly half of people working in finance telework in a given month, yet only a sliver of open accounting postings say remote. The gap says a lot about how to search.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says 52.5 percent of workers in financial activities teleworked in June 2026, which is the highest share of any major industry it tracks, and then I look at our own board and see about 5,761 remote roles out of roughly 68,755 open accounting and finance postings, which works out to around 8 percent. Those two numbers shouldn't both be true if remote work were as common as the headlines make it sound, and the reason they are is the most useful thing I can tell you about looking for a remote accounting job right now.

To be clear on what I'm comparing, because it matters: the BLS number counts people who already hold jobs and did some or all of their work from home that month, and ours counts open postings that employers tagged remote when they listed them. Those are different animals, and I'll walk through why the gap is mostly explainable and partly a real problem you can work around.

How many accounting jobs are actually remote?

Around 8 percent of the open accounting and finance postings in our database are tagged fully remote as of October 2026, about 5,761 of 68,755, and those postings come from employers' own career pages with recruiter reposts and duplicates stripped out. The median pay on those remote roles sits a little above $104,000 per our job board stats, which is better than I expected going in, and I'd still treat it as a snapshot rather than a promise.

So if you've been telling yourself that every second accounting job is remote and you're just unlucky, you're not unlucky, you're reading a number about workers and applying it to openings. Honestly I did the same thing for a while.

Why does the BLS number look so much bigger than the postings?

The BLS split is 27.1 percent of financial activities workers teleworking all hours, 25.4 percent teleworking some hours, and 47.5 percent not teleworking at all. Nearly half of that 52.5 percent is hybrid, meaning a person with an office badge who works from the kitchen table two days a week, and a hybrid job almost never gets listed as remote because the employer still wants you within commuting distance.

There's also the survival effect. Someone who got a remote arrangement three years ago and kept it doesn't show up as a posting again until they leave, and when they leave the employer often backfills with a hybrid role because the new manager wants people in the room. The stock of remote workers is bigger than the flow of remote openings, and a job seeker lives entirely in the flow. We looked at how that played out on the hiring side in our piece on hybrid becoming the default, and it lines up with what the BLS split implies.

Where do the remote roles hide?

Not where the big job aggregators put them. The BLS puts the highest telework rate of any detailed industry at finance and insurance, 59.0 percent, and professional and technical services at 55.8 percent, so the remote-friendly employers tend to be fintechs, insurers, software companies, and the CPA and advisory firms that sell services to clients anywhere. If you're only searching a title like Staff Accountant with the remote filter on a general board, you're fishing in the wrong pond, because plenty of the best remote roles carry titles like Revenue Accountant, Technical Accounting Analyst or Accounting Operations Specialist.

The other trick is that a lot of fully remote postings sit on a company's own career page and never get pushed to a big board at all, which is exactly why we link straight to employer pages instead of through a recruiter middleman. Start with our remote accounting jobs page, then try remote senior accountant jobs and remote tax jobs if those match your seat. Does remote work cost you pay or leverage?

It depends on how senior you are, and the short version is that the penalty is small at the junior end and fades as you move up, which we dug into in Do Remote Accounting Jobs Pay Less?. The leverage point is subtler: with only about one in twelve postings remote, each one pulls a national applicant pool, so your odds on a given remote posting are worse than on a local hybrid one, and I'd rather you go in knowing that than get demoralized by the silence after your tenth application.

What I'd do

I'd run two searches at once. The first is fully remote, aimed at the fintech, insurance and advisory crowd and applied to quickly, because those postings fill fast and attract the widest pool. The second is hybrid in your own metro, where the competition is thinner and you can negotiate a remote day or two once you're in, since a hybrid job that turns into a remote one after a year is a common path and nobody advertises it. Keep a list of the employers whose career pages show remote roles repeatedly, because a company that has hired remote accountants three times will do it a fourth.

And build something while you search, anything, even a little Excel or Python tool that cleans a trial balance, because the remote roles lean on people who can show they work well without supervision, and a portfolio piece says that louder than a cover letter. If you want the full cast of employers, our remote bookkeeping jobs guide and the part-time remote accounting jobs piece cover the adjacent lanes.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of accounting jobs are remote?

About 8 percent of the open accounting and finance postings we track are fully remote as of October 2026, roughly 5,761 out of 68,755. Hybrid roles are listed separately, so the share of jobs with some remote flexibility is higher.

How many finance workers work from home?

The BLS reports 52.5 percent of workers in financial activities teleworked in June 2026, with 27.1 percent working from home all hours and 25.4 percent some hours.

Why are there fewer remote postings than remote workers?

Many teleworkers are hybrid, so their roles are advertised as on-site or hybrid, and people already in remote jobs rarely reopen the posting. Openings are a flow while telework is a stock.

Which accounting roles are most likely to be remote?

Roles at fintechs, insurers and advisory firms tend to run remote, and titles like technical accounting, revenue accounting and tax compliance show up often. Check our remote landing pages for live examples.

Do remote accounting jobs pay less?

The gap is small for junior roles and shrinks with seniority. Our median remote pay is a little above $104,000 as of October 2026, and the longer breakdown is in our pay comparison post.

The search gets easier once you stop comparing yourself to the telework statistic and start working the openings that exist, so pick one remote employer today and read their career page end to end.
