Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.

The lowest-scoring dimension is the weak point. Read that one first.
Implementation
86
+

Bloomberg claims full implementation in under two months, and three vendor case studies report three to four weeks, one month and under a month. One customer implemented it without outside help, and the vendor says no schemas, mapping or custom code are needed. Seven implementer firms have been named since July 2022 for buyers who want help. The caveat is a parallel run of about a year in two case studies.

Support
78
+

The help center lists phone support on weekdays from 9 am to 7 pm ET and a dedicated Provision mailbox, both described as part of the subscription (checked 9 October 2026). Bloomberg claims 93 percent of calls are answered in under 20 seconds and 95 percent of customers are satisfied, figures that cover its whole response team. Case-study customers praise patient support and training videos at no separate charge; no response-time commitment is published.

Compliance depth
74
+

Bloomberg Industry Group's trust center lists SOC 1 and SOC 2 on a profile that covers its tax software, including Tax Provision, but report type, period and scope are gated (checked 9 October 2026). The product page says every change is documented down to the cell level, the suite overview cites time-stamped change records and locked books, and one case-study customer says its Big Four auditor has raised no concerns about the reports. Nothing published covers reviewer sign-off levels or data residency, which keeps it below ONESOURCE Tax Provision.

Tax content & coverage
72
+

Coverage is the ASC 740 provision in depth: state-by-state calculations, uncertain tax benefits, the interim annual effective tax rate, valuation allowance automation, a payable true-up and the ASU 2023-09 rate reconciliation report released on 6 August 2025. Federal, state, District of Columbia and New York City rates come from Bloomberg Tax Research (reported, September 2022). It stops there: no returns, and no IFRS or Pillar Two claim on the pages read.

Scalability
66
+

Vendor case studies span a one-person provision team, a group with over 100 legal entities in 20 countries, and a Fortune 500 company with 120 entities and about 500 state returns. Multinational reporting, non-US statutory rates and multi-currency reporting were announced on 3 August 2026, so global scale is recent. Bloomberg publishes no entity, user or performance limits.

Integrations & data flow
58
+

Data comes in through spreadsheet import templates, a direct export from Bloomberg Tax Workpapers (announced 18 July 2024) and rates from Bloomberg Tax Research (September 2022); a collaboration announced on 9 September 2026 is meant to add DMI Tax Position Manager calculations, with no availability date given. Bloomberg says Workpapers reaches ERP and general ledger data over SFTP. No ERP connector, API or provision-to-return link is documented, and outputs leave as Excel reports.

AI / agent readiness
40
+

No MCP server appears in the public MCP registry or on GitHub, and Bloomberg publishes no API documentation for Provision (checked 11 October 2026). The in-product AI is a research assistant announced on 3 August 2026. The AI formula generator announced on 18 July 2024, and the formula, workflow and tracker agents listed on the Workpapers product page as of 9 October 2026, belong to Bloomberg Tax Workpapers, a separate product. An agent can only work on spreadsheets before upload or after export.

Pricing transparency
28
+

No list price, pricing unit or fee is published; pricing goes through a request form (checked 9 October 2026). The only public benchmark, Vendr's $10,360 median, spans all Bloomberg Industry Group products, and the page states no sample size (checked 11 October 2026). Case studies call the product economical without stating a figure.

The verdict

A fast, ASC 740-first provision tool for US mid-market teams, thin on APIs, ERP links and public pricing.

Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.

Bloomberg Tax Provision is the former Tax Prodigy Provision, which Bloomberg Industry Group bought in a deal announced on 3 August 2021. It is a web application built around the ASC 740 balance sheet approach. Current and deferred tax, state-by-state calculations, uncertain tax benefits, interim rates, the payable and the footnote reports all come from one data set, so the rate reconciliation ties as the work proceeds. The typical buyer is a US tax department of one to ten people that still runs the provision in Excel. Bloomberg says it goes live in under two months, and three of its case studies report about one month.

The catch is everything around the calculation. Bloomberg publishes no price, no API and no named ERP connector. Data arrives through spreadsheet import templates or through Bloomberg Tax Workpapers, which is a separate subscription. Support for non-US statutory rates and multi-currency reporting was announced only on 3 August 2026, and the product pages make no IFRS or Pillar Two claim. It prepares no returns. Groups that need provision and compliance in one database will find CSC Corptax a closer fit. Groups that need a direct ERP integration will find ONESOURCE Tax Provision or Longview Tax a closer fit, since both document an SAP S/4HANA connection.

Before signing, get five things in writing. First, the SOC 1 and SOC 2 reports with type, period and confirmation that Tax Provision is in scope; the trust center lists both and gates the documents. Second, the price basis (entities, users or jurisdictions) and a renewal cap. Third, whether Professional Services onboarding and the Bloomberg Tax Research rate feed are included. Fourth, how the trial balance gets in each quarter if Workpapers is left out. Fifth, that the August 2026 global and interim features are live in the version being sold.

Best for
  • A US tax department of ten or fewer people running a multi-state ASC 740 provision in Excel that needs software live before the next year-end close.
  • A company whose auditor wants state-by-state deferred tax in place of a blended state rate across dozens of entities and hundreds of state filings.
  • A team already paying for Bloomberg Tax Research or Workpapers that wants current rates and workpaper data flowing into the provision.
Not for
  • Multinationals that report under IFRS or need Pillar Two calculations inside the provision system.
  • Tax departments that want the provision and US return compliance in one database with a provision-to-return link.
  • Teams that need a documented API, a native ERP connector or an agent surface to automate the close.
What it solves for finance

The jobs a tax team actually hires Bloomberg Tax Provision for

Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.

Provision

Move the ASC 740 provision off Excel

A tax and financial reporting manager at Novo Building Products says the software saved close to a month against the time the provision took in Excel. Data is entered once and flows through current tax, deferred tax and the rate reconciliation. The figure is a customer statement in a Bloomberg case study dated 10 January 2022.

State tax

Replace a blended state rate with state-by-state deferred tax

A Fortune 500 services company moved to state-by-state calculations after its auditor required the change, covering 120 operating entities and about 500 state returns. The customer says each new state for an entity added six calculations in Excel. A Certified Implementer adds that filing groups can mirror how the returns are filed.

Disclosure

Produce the ASU 2023-09 rate reconciliation and taxes-paid disclosure

Bloomberg released a rate reconciliation report on 6 August 2025 that breaks the reconciliation into eight categories in percentages and dollars and adds the taxes-paid disclosure by federal, state and foreign jurisdiction. The auditor report gained a matching tab. The standard applies to public companies for annual periods beginning after 15 December 2024.

Interim

Run the interim provision and compare quarters

A global agricultural company keeps a rate reconciliation for each of its 20 jurisdictions plus one consolidated view, and compares prior and current quarters before booking entries. It uploads in local currency and lets the software compute translation adjustments in the deferred rollforward. Bloomberg announced more detailed interim reporting on 3 August 2026.

Audit

Hand auditors one traceable report package

Novo's tax manager prints 13 reports at once, three of them footnote reports, and says the auditors asked no questions that year. Exports open in Excel with formulas and links back to source data. A packaging company says its Big Four auditor has raised no concerns about the reports.

M&A

Absorb acquisitions and restructurings without rebuilding the model

Novo consolidated 20 companies into four and says the change would have been close to impossible in its old spreadsheet. The Fortune 500 customer adds four to five acquisitions a year and uses the software to standardize state calculations for each new entity. Both accounts come from Bloomberg case studies.

Things to watch for
01
Pricing
No list price and no product-level benchmark

Bloomberg routes pricing through a request form shared by Provision, Workpapers, Fixed Assets and Research (checked 9 October 2026). Vendr's public page reports a median of $10,360 a year for Bloomberg Industry Group as a whole and states no sample size; the products it lists are Bloomberg Law, Bloomberg Government and Bloomberg Terminal (reported, checked 11 October 2026). No public source isolates what Provision costs or what drives the quote. Ask whether the price scales with entities, users or jurisdictions, and get the renewal cap in the order form.

01
Integration
No API and no named ERP connector

None of the Bloomberg Tax product, integration or AI pages read on 9 October 2026 mentions an API, and Bloomberg Tax has no public developer portal. A case-study customer loads data by filling a Provision import template and importing it, and its overseas offices do the same. The automated route is Bloomberg Tax Workpapers, which Bloomberg says pulls ERP and general ledger data over SFTP and exports directly to Provision (announced 18 July 2024). Workpapers is a separate product, so price both if hands-off loads matter.

01
Content
Global coverage is new

The product began as a US GAAP tool for mid-market companies, launched as Tax Prodigy Provision in April 2017. Bloomberg's release of 3 August 2026 adds multinational reporting, non-US statutory tax rates, multi-currency reporting and detailed interim reporting. A February 2024 case study does describe a customer with over 100 entities in 20 countries uploading in local currency, so some foreign capability predates the release. The pages read make no IFRS or Pillar Two claim. Multinationals should test their own structure in a demo before relying on the announcement.

01
Compliance
SOC reports sit behind an access request

Bloomberg Industry Group's trust center lists SOC 1 and SOC 2 on a profile for Bloomberg Tax & Accounting Software that names Tax Provision as a product (checked 9 October 2026). The reports, a penetration test report and the subprocessor list open only after an access request. The public page gives no report type, audit period or auditor, and does not say which products each report covers. A provision system feeds the financial statements, so request the SOC 1 report, confirm it is a Type 2 that covers Tax Provision, and ask for a bridge letter before the auditors do.

01
Migration
Go-live is quick, cutover takes a year

Bloomberg's under-two-months claim covers setup. A hybrid IT provider ran side-by-side provisions in its first year and relied on the software alone from year two (case study dated 10 January 2022). A Fortune 500 services company ran parallel for about a year, including a full year-end close, to satisfy its CFO and auditors (case study dated 9 December 2025). Plan staff time for double work across at least one annual close.

01
Evidence
Most of the proof is vendor-published

Six Bloomberg case studies were read for this review on 9 October 2026. Three describe unnamed companies, and one named reference, Riveron, is also a member of Bloomberg's Certified Implementer Program. The time-saved figures, such as close to a month per provision at Novo Building Products, are customer statements published by the vendor. Ask Bloomberg for two reference calls with companies that match your entity count and audit firm.

How Claude & agents work with it

Agent readiness

Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.

No MCP server and no documented public API. The in-product AI is a research assistant in the provision workflow, announced August 2026.
ONESOURCE Tax Provision
CSC Corptax

Exists: No first-party MCP server covers Bloomberg Tax Provision. The public MCP registry returns nothing for Bloomberg, Bloomberg Tax or BTAX, and GitHub shows no Bloomberg Tax MCP repository (checked 9 October 2026). The Bloomberg MCP projects on GitHub are community wrappers for the Bloomberg Terminal market data API, a different product from a different Bloomberg business.

Scope: There is no documented public API either. Bloomberg Tax publishes no developer portal or API reference, and none of its product, integration or AI pages mentions one. Data gets in through spreadsheet import templates, a direct export from Bloomberg Tax Workpapers (announced 18 July 2024), tax rates pulled from Bloomberg Tax Research and, under a collaboration announced on 9 September 2026, uncertain tax position calculations from DMI's Tax Position Manager. Results leave as Excel reports that keep their formulas.

Turnkey: Nothing is available to switch on or configure. The application sits behind Bloomberg Industry Group's sign-in, so an agent can only work on the files around it: the spreadsheet a preparer loads through an import template, or a report exported afterward.

In-product AI: Bloomberg announced an embedded AI-powered Tax Research Assistant for Provision on 3 August 2026. The vendor says it brings Bloomberg Tax research and ASC 740 guidance into the provision workflow; the release describes no agent that prepares, reviews or books the provision. Bloomberg Tax Workpapers, a separate product, gained an AI formula generator on 18 July 2024, and its product page listed a formula builder agent, a data workflow builder and a development tracker agent as of 9 October 2026. Bloomberg says its generative AI uses retrieval-augmented generation over its own content, links to sources and abstains when no content covers the question.

Questions buyers ask

Bloomberg Tax Provision FAQ

What does Bloomberg Tax Provision cost for a mid-market tax department?
−

Bloomberg publishes no price. The pricing page is a request form that covers Provision, Workpapers, Fixed Assets and Research, and a sales representative follows up (checked 9 October 2026).

The only public benchmark is Vendr's page for Bloomberg Industry Group as a whole: a median of $10,360 a year, with the middle 80 percent of Vendr's reported deals between $2,573 and $32,928 (reported, per Vendr, checked 11 October 2026). The page states no sample size and lists Bloomberg Law, Bloomberg Government and Bloomberg Terminal beside the company, so it cannot stand in for a Provision quote.

Customers in Bloomberg's own case studies describe it as cheaper to own than larger provision systems, mainly because they implemented it themselves or in about a month. One tax manager says implementation at other vendors usually costs more than the annual subscription. No case study states a dollar figure.

Ask for the price basis in writing (entities, users or jurisdictions), a renewal cap, and whether onboarding, the Research rate feed and the August 2026 global features are in the base subscription.

Subscription terms for the software are not public. The terms page on bloombergindustry.com governs the website only, and the trust center lists a Data Processing Agreement without showing its text (checked 9 October 2026). Case-study customers refer to an annual subscription.

Getting data out is an Excel exercise. Customers describe downloading reports to Excel with working formulas, including an audit report package and footnote reports, and one prints 13 reports with a single click. No API or bulk export endpoint is documented.

Before signing, ask for the term length, the renewal uplift cap, how long prior-period data stays available after termination, and a full export of every period's inputs and reports. Keep the exported audit report for each filed period, so the support for the financial statements stays in your own records.

How long does implementation take, and who does it?
+

Bloomberg says the product can be fully implemented in under two months with onboarding from its Professional Services team (vendor-claimed, checked 9 October 2026). Its case studies come in faster: three to four weeks at a global agricultural company with over 100 legal entities, one month at a Fortune 500 services company with 120 entities, and under a month at a midsize packaging company.

The Fortune 500 case describes the method: a one-hour call each week with a Bloomberg implementation lead, with setup steps assigned to the tax team in between, for four weeks. One mid-market customer says it did the implementation itself. Buyers who want outside help can hire a Certified Implementer; Bloomberg has named RSM, GTM, VPTax, Baker Tilly, BDO USA, Riveron and, on 16 June 2026, EY US.

Budget separately for the parallel run. Two case-study customers kept Excel running beside the software for about a year, including a full year-end close, before the CFO and auditors were comfortable retiring the spreadsheets.

Can Claude or another AI agent operate Bloomberg Tax Provision?
+

No. There is no MCP server for Bloomberg Tax Provision in the public MCP registry or on GitHub, and Bloomberg Tax publishes no developer portal or API reference for it (checked 9 October 2026).

An agent can still help around the edges: tidying the spreadsheet that goes into an import template, or reading an exported Excel report and explaining movements in the rate reconciliation. A person has to do the upload and the download.

Inside the product, Bloomberg announced an embedded AI research assistant on 3 August 2026 that the vendor says brings Bloomberg Tax research and ASC 740 guidance into the provision workflow. It answers questions. The release describes nothing that prepares or reviews the calculation.

Request pricing through Bloomberg's form and ask for a written quote that states the price basis, any onboarding fee and a renewal cap. In the same call, ask for the SOC 1 report, a demo of the August 2026 global features on your own entity structure, and two customer references of your size.
