CereTax is an API-first U.S. tax calculation engine for sales and use tax plus communications, utility and energy taxes, with exemption certificate tools, built for mid-market and enterprise billers in telecom, energy, SaaS and manufacturing.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
CereTax publishes a 90-day plan: integration and a nexus baseline in month one, product mapping and certificate migration in month two, a parallel run in month three (guide dated 8 September 2026). A CERT sandbox sits beside production, and Avalara migrations include configuration mapping and side-by-side testing. Timeline claims conflict across its own pages, from about 30 days to 3 to 6 months, so the plan needs to be fixed in the statement of work.
CereTax says it processed 10,000 simultaneous transactions a second at launch (blog, 21 June 2024), and a customer case study cites more than 25 million API calls a month. The API docs set a 1,000-line limit per invoice and assign transactions-per-second limits by account plan. The public status page showed 100 percent uptime over 90 days and no incidents from August to October 2026. The company itself is small, with a 9 million dollar Series A in 2024, and that is the scale risk.
Onboarding runs through an assigned implementation specialist (API docs), and the site promises direct access to tax experts; the knowledge base, as captured on 10 October 2026, routes live customers to email and a portal ticket form. CereTax reported a 99 percent CSAT score for 2024, a vendor figure. No response times or paid tiers are published; the license says the service level agreement is available on request. Independent review volume is thin: the BigCommerce listing shows 5.00 from 2 reviews (11 October 2026).
CereTax says the engine held more than 98,000 active tax rates, 67 million taxability decisions and 5.9 million exemption decisions as of August 2026, kept current by an in-house research team. Coverage runs deep in U.S. sales and use tax, communications taxes and fees, and utility taxes, and the Content API serves rates by content month. Billing partner Datagate says its CereTax integration handles U.S. and Canadian telecom taxes, and the Rillet connector calculates VAT, but no country list is published, and CereTax files no returns.
CereTax's integrations page lists 19 systems (11 October 2026), including first-party apps for NetSuite, Dynamics 365 Business Central and Finance and Operations, QuickBooks Online, Salesforce CPQ and Commerce Cloud, Stripe Billing and Rillet. It also lists telecom billing platforms such as Rev.io, OneBill, Datagate and Amdocs. SAP, Oracle ERP and Workday have no listed connector and go through the API or batch upload.
Every calculation is stored at the transaction level with the rate and rule behind it, and the portal separates users from roles and ships pre-built roles (portal post, 8 December 2025); custom roles and multi-role assignment from 29 June 2026 appear only in the knowledge base as captured on 10 October 2026. The security page shows a SOC badge and the license says a SOC 2 report is available on request, but no report type, audit period or SOC 1 is published (checked 11 October 2026). The public reseller license caps liability at 10,000 dollars and leaves all tax obligations with the customer, and CereTax is absent from the Streamlined Sales Tax certified service provider list.
No MCP server exists: the docs portal's MCP option is switched off and the public MCP registry returns nothing for CereTax (10 October 2026). The REST API is documented in public with OpenAPI definitions, markdown pages and an llms.txt index, which helps a custom agent build. In-product AI is described only in general terms on the About page; the one concrete item is an OCR pipeline for certificate uploads in the Certificate Exemption API, usable from 14 September 2026.
There is no pricing page. The product FAQ describes usage-based pricing by requests, transactions or seats and sends buyers to sales for a quote. The only public figure is a starting price of 99 dollars a month on the BigCommerce app listing, and Vendr's CereTax page carries no price data (10 October 2026). An offer of three free months for Avalara switchers is published, but implementation fees and overage rates are not.
Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.
CereTax is a tax calculation engine with a telecom pedigree. It returns sales tax, communications taxes, 911 and 988 fees, Universal Service Fund charges and utility taxes on each invoice line, sourced to the rooftop of the service address. The company says more than 200 customers run on it (page updated 23 September 2026) and that the engine held more than 98,000 active tax rates as of August 2026. It also sells use tax checking on vendor invoices and SmartExempt for exemption certificates. First-party apps cover NetSuite, Dynamics 365, QuickBooks Online, Salesforce and Stripe, and the API reference is public.
It stops at calculation. CereTax states that it does not file returns, so registrations, filing and remittance go to an accounting firm or filing partner at extra cost. Pricing is quote only; the one public figure is a starting price of 99 dollars a month on its BigCommerce listing. The company is young and small: founded in 2021, with a 9 million dollar Series A announced in June 2024. Its security page shows a SOC badge without naming the report type and mentions no SOC 1 report. Go-live claims on its own site range from about 30 days to 6 months.
Before signing, get the SOC 2 report and its audit period, and ask whether a SOC 1 exists. Get the service level agreement, since the license says it is available on request. Ask for the liability cap and any accuracy commitment: the public reseller license caps liability at 10,000 dollars and leaves every tax obligation with the customer. Fix the usage unit, overage rate and renewal cap in the order form. Name the filing partner and price that work separately.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
CereTax classifies each service line, sources it to the service address and returns sales tax, communications taxes, 911 and 988 fees and Universal Service Fund charges as separate lines. Bundles are taxed component by component from the bundle's allocation. The API docs mark each tax as required, optional or prohibited to pass through to the customer; safe harbor overrides from traffic studies are described in the knowledge base as captured on 10 October 2026.
For retail energy providers, the engine calculates sales tax, utility users taxes, gross receipts taxes, franchise fees and local surcharges by service location and customer class. The sale transaction API carries a Meter field on each line and energy units such as kWh and therms (API reference, updated 10 July 2026). Exemptions such as manufacturing or resale apply at calculation time.
CereTax P2P evaluates each vendor invoice line by what was bought, where it is used and who sold it, then flags tax charged in error or use tax to accrue. Results return by API or batch upload with the tax code and rate. The savings figure comes from CereTax's own case study of a Fortune 500 manufacturer, first published in 2021.
SmartExempt requests certificates by email, checks format, expiration and jurisdiction, links each certificate to its customer and flags gaps. Bulk CSV or PDF uploads and a buyer upload page are supported. A Certificate Exemption API with an OCR upload pipeline became usable on 14 September 2026.
CereTax maps the existing configuration, rebuilds it, runs both engines side by side and cuts over once the customer is confident in the results. It advertises three free months to companies that switch from Avalara before renewal. The 3-month figure is a customer quote on CereTax's site, so check it against a scoped plan.
The NetSuite SuiteApp, the Business Central app on Microsoft AppSource and the QuickBooks Online app calculate tax inside the ERP: on invoices and sales orders in Business Central and on invoices and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online, per CereTax's integration pages. The knowledge base release notes, as captured on 10 October 2026, list NetSuite release 1.7.4 (23 September 2026) with a Preview Tax button that calculates before a record is saved.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Usage-based by requests, transactions or seats depending on the package, per the product FAQ. No list prices are published.
BigCommerce's marketplace lists custom pricing starting at $99 a month (listing last updated 14 August 2025).
Published promotion for companies that switch from Avalara before their renewal. The terms are not posted.
CereTax does not file returns. A filing partner or accountant does that work under its own fees.
The Microsoft Marketplace listing showed a free trial when captured on 10 October 2026; the duration was not stated. CereTax's own Business Central page does not mention a trial, so confirm it before relying on it.
CereTax's 90-day implementation guide (dated 8 September 2026, read 11 October 2026) states that it does not file returns and that a filing partner or accountant prepares and submits them from its reports. Its telecom compliance page says it deliberately does not sell filing. Registrations, returns, remittance and notices therefore need a second vendor, such as an accounting firm on its partner list. Nexus upkeep also stays with the customer: a CereTax post on NetSuite tax automation (11 June 2026) says someone must register and update the nexus configuration when a threshold is crossed, although the product FAQ says the engine handles economic nexus thresholds automatically, so ask what that covers. Budget the filing fee on top of the CereTax quote.
The product FAQ (read 10 October 2026) describes usage-based pricing by requests, transactions or seats and directs buyers to sales. The only published figure is a starting price of $99 a month on the BigCommerce app listing, last updated 14 August 2025. Vendr's CereTax page has no price data, so there is no public benchmark to test a quote against. Ask for the unit, the volume band, the overage rate and a written cap on renewal increases.
The end user license CereTax posts for partner-resold subscriptions (read 10 October 2026) limits its total liability to 10,000 dollars and says CereTax has no liability for the customer's tax obligations. It provides the software as is, applies Georgia law and requires claims within one year. No accuracy guarantee or audit defense commitment appears in it. Direct contracts may differ, so read the liability and warranty clauses in the agreement actually offered.
The security page (read 10 October 2026) shows an AICPA SOC badge and describes continuous monitoring of 100+ controls, and the license says a SOC 2 report may be made available on request. The product FAQ tells buyers to ask for attestations during evaluation. No SOC 1 report is mentioned on the security page, in the product FAQ or in the license, and auditors of a billing company often want one for a system that feeds tax liabilities. CereTax is also absent from the Streamlined Sales Tax certified service provider list, where Avalara and Sovos appear.
On 10 October 2026 the home page and product FAQ said 3 to 6 months, the comparison pages said 4 to 8 weeks, the Avalara switch page said about 30 days and the 90-day guide said under 90 days. The Business Central page says most finance teams are live in a couple of weeks. The spread likely reflects connector installs versus engine replacements. Get a dated plan with the parallel run included before relying on any of them.
CereTax's QuickBooks Online setup guide in its knowledge base (updated 13 August 2026, as captured on 10 October 2026) says that when the QuickBooks Automated Sales Tax module is on, third parties cannot write to the native tax fields, so CereTax tax will not update correctly there. The alternative it describes is to post tax as line items, one per tax type, against a Taxes item the customer creates. CereTax's public QuickBooks page does not mention the limit. Ask CereTax which mode applies before buying, because it changes invoice layout and reporting.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. CereTax has no first-party MCP server. Its API docs run on a hosted documentation platform whose MCP option is switched off for this project, the public MCP registry returns no CereTax entry, and its GitHub organization has no public repositories (all checked 10 October 2026).
Scope: What exists is a REST API. The public reference covers sale, purchase and telecom transactions (create, replace, reverse, update status), customers and exemptions, exemption certificates and certificate requests, address validation, tax rate lookups, batch files and reports. Each endpoint page carries an OpenAPI definition and a markdown version, and an llms.txt index lists them for AI tools.
Turnkey: No. Authentication is a single x-api-key header, and the docs say the implementation team issues the key during onboarding, so there is no self-serve signup. A CERT sandbox sits beside production. An agent needs a developer to wrap the endpoints as tools and an admin to decide which key it holds; the public docs describe no per-endpoint scopes for a key.
In-product AI: the About page calls the platform AI-powered without naming features. The documented item is an OCR pipeline that reads uploaded exemption certificates, which the API reference says can be used as of 14 September 2026. Avalara's comparison page says CereTax offers no agentic AI; that is a competitor's statement.
Per CereTax's knowledge base release notes as captured on 10 October 2026, a Preview Tax button calculates tax and shows the jurisdiction breakdown on a sales transaction before it is saved. The release also fixes tax going stale when other scripts change line amounts.
The connector calculates sales tax or VAT when a Rillet invoice or credit memo is created, updated or paid and writes tax lines back. Setup uses two admin screens and a webhook.
The API reference notes that the certificate file upload endpoint, which feeds an OCR pipeline, can be used as of 14 September 2026. The same API covers certificates, requests, campaigns and reports.
Per CereTax's knowledge base release notes as captured on 10 October 2026, customers switch the setting on in the portal and map products to new holiday-enabled product codes. Only specific states and holiday categories were supported at that date.
CereTax supplies calculation and reporting while CBIZ supplies nexus studies, exemption work and audit defense. It formalizes the model in which advisory and filing sit with a partner.
CereTax's post dated 8 December 2025 says the new portal is live, with a single transactions screen that searches by line item, rule duplication that copies all values, and separate user and role management. The post says the engine is unchanged.
CereTax prices by quote. Its product FAQ says pricing is usage-based, by requests, transactions or seats depending on the package, with an estimate given during scoping (read 10 October 2026).
The only published figure is a starting price of $99 a month on its BigCommerce app listing. No public benchmark covers CereTax: Vendr's page for it shows no price data.
For context only, Vendr's public pages on 10 October 2026 showed median annual contracts of $16,898 for Avalara (761 purchases), $26,395 for Sovos (on 14 purchases pooled across all Sovos products) and $40,297 for Vertex (47 purchases). Those are peer figures. Filing is a separate cost because CereTax does not file returns.
CereTax posts no master agreement for direct customers. The public documents are its website terms and the end user license used when a partner resells the product (read 10 October 2026).
That license runs for the subscription periods purchased, lets CereTax terminate after an uncured 30-day breach notice, applies Georgia law, caps CereTax's liability at 10,000 dollars and requires claims within one year. It says the customer owns its data and that CereTax will make the data available for electronic retrieval before deleting it under its data retention policy.
Day to day, data leaves through reports: the portal and Reporting API export Excel or CSV files, and transaction lists come back through the API 100 at a time. CereTax holds calculation records only. Return copies and filing history sit with the filing partner, so ask both parties for retention periods in writing.
CereTax's guide dated 8 September 2026 says deployments run in under 90 days. Month one connects the ERP or billing system and sets the nexus baseline, month two maps products and migrates exemption certificates, and month three runs CereTax in parallel with the old process for a full billing cycle.
Other pages on its site give 4 to 8 weeks, about 30 days for Avalara switchers, or 3 to 6 months. Connector installs on Business Central or QuickBooks Online sit at the short end; replacing an engine in a telecom billing stack sits at the long end.
A CereTax implementation specialist leads the work and issues the API keys. The customer's tax lead owns product taxability decisions, the system admin installs the connector, and the filing partner joins before the first return.
Only through custom code today. CereTax has no MCP server and no agent connector (checked 10 October 2026).
Its REST API is public and documented with OpenAPI definitions and an llms.txt index, so a developer can wrap endpoints as tools. An agent holding an API key could calculate tax on an invoice, look up rates, manage customers, exemptions and certificates, and pull reports.
Keys are issued by CereTax's implementation team during onboarding, and the public docs describe no per-endpoint scopes. Decide which environment the agent may reach, CERT or production, and keep reversals and exemption changes behind human review.
