Commenda is a compliance platform with an in-house filing team that tracks nexus, registers, files and remits US sales tax, VAT and GST alongside entity management and transfer pricing, for startups and mid-market companies expanding into new countries; pricing is by quote.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Customers can message a named account manager from the home screen, and each conversation is linked to the service it relates to (changelog, 13 and 23 April 2026). The indirect tax FAQ says staff triage state notices and represent customers in audits under a power of attorney. Commenda's comparison page cites a 95 percent G2 quality-of-support score (vendor-cited), and no response-time SLA is published.
Commenda runs the migration itself: its switch page describes five steps and an average of about two weeks to go live, 'system dependent', with the first filing cycle inside 30 days (vendor-claimed, checked 10 October 2026). The TRX case study reports six weeks and 'a number of challenges' with the NetSuite integration. NetSuite calculation needs a SuiteScript plugin installed with the account team, and there is no free trial or self-serve signup.
The docs matrix lists 14 accounting, commerce and payment connectors, with tax calculation marked for QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Zoho Books and WooCommerce, and Shopify marked as sync only (checked 10 October 2026). NetSuite syncs receivables and payables and writes tax back to sales documents. The site claims 100+ integrations and native Sage Intacct, Chargebee, Recurly and Zuora connections that the docs matrix does not list.
The site footer shows an AICPA SOC 2 Type II badge, and no SOC 1 report or public trust center appears (checked 10 October 2026). The docs describe accuracy and on-time filing guarantees capped at the fees paid in the prior 12 months, a three-step filing workflow with customer approval and a lock on reviewed numbers, and six user roles. The public terms provide the service as is, cap liability at six months of fees and state hosting in the United States and India.
The docs are narrower than the marketing. The calculation API lists the United States and the United Kingdom as supported countries, exposure tracking covers the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, and automated VAT return boxes cover 23 EU member states plus the UK (docs, checked 10 October 2026). The FAQ says China is unsupported, Brazil e-invoicing is on the roadmap, and markets needing local credentials are filed through local partners.
Commenda says 500+ companies use it (home page, checked 10 October 2026), and its most detailed sales tax case study, TRX, lists 51 to 200 staff. The price list archived on 31 March 2026 capped the two published indirect tax tiers at 500 and 1,200 transactions a month, with anything larger sent to Enterprise. The API docs publish no rate limits, and filing capacity depends on an in-house services team.
Commenda documents no MCP server today: its public docs repository shows the MCP server pages were removed on 8 May 2026, and the official MCP registry lists none (checked 11 October 2026). The changelog says the in-app Chat, in beta since 24 July 2026, runs on a 'Commenda MCP' and answered questions only at launch. The REST API has an OpenAPI spec with 39 paths plus webhooks, and keys are issued by Commenda's team on request.
No price list is public: the /pricing address redirects to the home page, and the comparison page says to book a demo for a custom quote (checked 10 October 2026). An Internet Archive capture from 31 March 2026 shows a full list, from $300 a month for indirect tax, and PricingSaaS last recorded it on 14 June 2026. A Commenda blog post updated 6 August 2026 still refers to published tiers, and the terms allow fee changes.

Commenda sells a service wrapped in software. The platform syncs transactions from the ERP or billing system, tracks nexus in all 50 states, and holds registrations, exemption certificates and a filing calendar. An in-house team then registers, prepares, files and remits, with the customer approving each return in a three-step workflow (docs, checked 10 October 2026). The same workspace runs entity management, transfer pricing and corporate tax, which is the main reason to pick it over a sales tax point tool.
The marketing runs ahead of the documentation. The site claims real-time calculation across 70+ countries and 100+ integrations. The calculation API docs list two supported countries, the United States and the United Kingdom, and the integration matrix lists 14 connectors, with Shopify as sync only. Coverage beyond that runs through Commenda's staff and local partners. The public price list left the site between June and October 2026, SOC 2 Type II is the only attestation shown, and the company is early-stage (its latest reported round is a seed) with five product lines to maintain.
Before signing, get the quote itemized by jurisdiction, transaction volume and module, with a cap on renewal increases. Ask for the accuracy and on-time filing guarantees to be written into the order form, because the public terms provide the service as is and cap liability at six months of fees. Ask which countries Commenda files directly and which go through a partner. Request the SOC 2 Type II report, and agree how filed returns, certificates and portal credentials are exported on exit.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Commenda consolidates transactions from connected systems and CSV uploads into one ledger tagged by ship-to state, then measures it against each state's threshold. Physical triggers such as employees, offices and 3PL inventory come from payroll data or location records. The exposure engine also evaluates Canada, the UK, EU countries and the OSS and IOSS schemes (docs, checked 10 October 2026).
Filings are generated from each registration's filing frequency. A Commenda advisor drafts the return and locks the numbers, the customer reviews the transactions and approves, and the advisor submits to the tax authority and confirms. Documents, prepayments and chat stay attached to the filing for later audit questions.
Customers upload certificates through a portal link, or the finance team adds them by hand. Commenda stores each certificate against the customer with its jurisdictions and expiry date, and active exemptions adjust tax on linked transactions. TRX's controller says one team member runs all of the company's certificates in the tool (vendor case study).
For EU and UK filings the engine converts invoices into the reporting currency, groups them by origin, destination, rate and customer type, and fills the return boxes, including Union OSS and IOSS returns. A missing FX rate blocks the filing until it is fixed. The FAQ says UK Making Tax Digital submission runs through the NetSuite, Xero and QuickBooks integrations.
Commenda's switch program rebuilds tax code mapping, carries over registrations and certificates, and re-runs the nexus analysis before go-live. In the TRX case it also de-registered the company where filings were no longer required. Commenda says 100+ businesses have moved from Avalara and other legacy providers (vendor-claimed).
Incorporation, entity management, indirect tax, transfer pricing and corporate tax and accounting share the same entities, documents and compliance calendar. A VAT return, a Delaware franchise tax date and a transfer pricing file appear in one calendar with owners assigned. That shared record is why a multi-entity finance team would pick Commenda over a sales tax point tool.
Forget the 40-row feature grid. Pick a finance workflow and see how this tool and its closest peers actually do it, with our verdict on who wins for whom.
Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Quoted after a demo on jurisdictions, transaction volume, filings and modules. No public price list on 10 October 2026.
Filings in up to 5 jurisdictions, up to 500 transactions a month and out-of-the-box integrations. No longer published.
Up to 1,200 transactions a month and 12 filing jurisdictions, exemption certificate management and a dedicated CSM with SLA support. No longer published.
Everything in Pro plus API access, reporting and analytics tooling, and custom data migration and implementation support. No longer published.
$50 a month per extra jurisdiction on Basic and $100 a month on Pro, per the 31 March 2026 capture.
Entity management from $50 per entity a month, transfer pricing from $400 a month and corporate income tax from $4,000 per return, each sold separately on the 31 March 2026 capture.
Commenda offers a free demo and a free exposure analysis in place of a trial (docs FAQ, checked 10 October 2026).
An Internet Archive capture of commenda.io/pricing from 31 March 2026 shows indirect tax from $300 a month, and PricingSaaS last recorded those prices on 14 June 2026. On 10 October 2026 the address redirects to the home page. A capture from 22 September 2025 shows a different structure, from $500 a month with per-transaction overage. A Commenda blog post updated 6 August 2026 still describes published tiers with a free plan for up to 3 entities, which the site no longer shows. Use the archived figures as a reference point and get the current unit and overage rules in writing.
Commenda's site promises real-time VAT, GST and sales tax calculation across 70+ jurisdictions. The calculation API page lists two supported countries, the United States and the United Kingdom, and the exposure engine covers the US, Canada, the UK and the EU (docs, checked 10 October 2026). Automated VAT return boxes exist for 23 EU member states and the UK. The indirect tax FAQ says China is unsupported, Brazil e-invoicing is on the roadmap, and markets needing local credentials go through vetted local partners. Ask for a country list split into engine-calculated, staff-filed and partner-filed.
The integrations page advertises 100+ integrations, and the indirect tax page names native Sage Intacct, Chargebee, Recurly and Zuora connections. The docs matrix lists 14 accounting, commerce and payment platforms, marks Shopify as order sync only and Sage as limited, and lists none of those three billing systems (checked 10 October 2026). The docs also disagree with themselves on Stripe: the matrix says no tax calculation, while the Stripe page describes calculation on draft invoices only. NetSuite calculation requires a SuiteScript plugin. Commenda offers to build custom integrations, so put the delivery date for yours in the order form.
The docs describe an accuracy guarantee and an on-time filing guarantee for indirect tax services, worded around sales tax returns, each capped at the fees paid in the 12 months before the tax period at issue (checked 10 October 2026). Claims need written notice within 14 days of an assessment notice or 10 days of a missed deadline, and errors traced to customer data, product tax mappings or late approvals are excluded. The page describes itself as an internal reference, and the public terms provide the service as is with liability capped at six months of fees. Have the guarantee text attached to the signed agreement.
The site footer carries an AICPA SOC 2 Type II badge, and no SOC 1 report, ISO certificate or trust center page is published (checked 10 October 2026). Sales tax liabilities flow into the financial statements, so auditors of larger companies often ask a tax engine for a SOC 1 Type 2 report. The terms say the services are hosted in the United States and India. The user guide documents sign-in by magic link or Google, and SSO appeared only in Enterprise tiers of the archived price list. Request the SOC 2 report and the hosting region before procurement review.
The home page says Commenda works with Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot through OAuth with user-scoped permissions, and the changelog credits a 'Commenda MCP' for the in-app Chat. The product docs carried an MCP server section until 8 May 2026, when commits in Commenda's public docs repository removed it. No public page now lists the tools, the objects they touch or how to connect a client (checked 11 October 2026). Chat was labeled beta on 24 July 2026 and was described then as answering questions only. Ask whether an MCP connection is offered to customers, and for the tool list and whether write tools can touch registrations or filings, before letting an agent in.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Not as a documented product. Commenda's changelog says its in-app Chat is 'powered by the Commenda MCP', and the home page says the product works with Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Commenda's public docs repository shows an MCP server section, with setup steps for Claude Desktop and Cursor, added on 1 April 2026 and removed on 8 May 2026, and it has not returned (checked 11 October 2026). No MCP page exists in the product docs today, and the official MCP registry lists no Commenda server. The MCP server on the docs site itself only searches documentation.
Scope: Unknown for the MCP, because no tool list is public. The docs section withdrawn on 8 May 2026 described read and write tools for entities, compliance items, registrations, sales tax filings, transactions, customers, products and exemption certificates; whether customers can still get any of that is unconfirmed. The home page describes agent tools that read documents, extract facts and stage entities for review, and says nothing becomes the system of record without approval. The documented surface is the REST API, whose OpenAPI spec lists 39 paths covering calculation, transactions, customers, products, exemption certificates, registrations, nexus, filings and webhooks.
Turnkey: No. Commenda publishes no setup guide, supported client list, limits or beta or general availability label for an MCP connection. The home page promises OAuth with user-scoped permissions for AI suites and gives no instructions. The setup page withdrawn on 8 May 2026 described a locally run Node server that needed an API key from Commenda's team, which is an admin-configured path, and it is no longer published. Treat agent access as something to request from Commenda and get described in writing.
In-product AI: Chat launched in beta on 24 July 2026 and moved onto the home screen on 31 July 2026. The changelog entry of 24 July 2026 says it answers questions about filings, entities and regulations from workspace data, with the ability to complete work promised 'in the coming weeks' (announced). The home page now advertises updating records and executing tasks by asking, and no changelog entry after 31 July 2026 confirms that has shipped (checked 11 October 2026). The indirect tax FAQ says AI handles classification, document handling and research, and that humans review the output before anything is filed. The privacy policy says personal data submitted by business customers is not used to train AI models.
The /pricing address redirected to the home page when checked on 10 October 2026. The removal date is not public: PricingSaaS last recorded the published tiers on 14 June 2026, so the list left the site at some point after that and pricing is now by quote.
Commits merged to Commenda's public docs repository removed the partner and affiliate API reference and redirected those pages. Buyers planning an embedded or white-label build should confirm which APIs remain supported.
Users can start a conversation from Home to ask questions, summarize activity and explore the workspace. Commenda says responses are grounded in workspace data through its MCP.
A natural-language workspace, 'powered by the Commenda MCP', that answers questions about filings, entities and regulations. Commenda says the ability to complete work will follow 'in the coming weeks' (announced).
A new Inbox tab gathers conversations across services, each linked to its filing or registration, and teammates can be invited and assigned to tasks within a service.
An Internet Archive capture shows Sales Tax, VAT, GST Basic from $300 a month and Pro from $1,000 a month, billed annually. The September 2025 capture had started at $500 a month with per-transaction overage.
Commenda quotes each customer. Its site shows no price list on 10 October 2026, and the comparison page says pricing scales with entity count and jurisdictions.
The last public list, captured by the Internet Archive on 31 March 2026, put indirect tax at $300 a month billed annually for up to 5 filing jurisdictions and 500 transactions a month, and $1,000 a month for up to 12 jurisdictions and 1,200 transactions. On those figures a seller filing in 12 jurisdictions would have paid about $12,000 a year on the Pro tier before extras, or about $7,800 a year on Basic with seven added jurisdictions at $50 a month each if it stayed under 500 transactions a month (Audit Friendly estimates from the archived list).
Entity management, transfer pricing and corporate tax returns were separate modules on that list. Ask for one quote that itemizes every module, the transaction allowance and the cost of adding a jurisdiction mid-term.
The public terms (last updated 30 June 2025) say subscriptions renew automatically, cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid term, and fees can change with notice. They provide the service as is and cap liability at the amount paid in the prior six months. A signed order form or MSA may differ, so review that document as well as the website terms.
The accuracy and on-time filing guarantees live in the product docs. Each is capped at the fees paid in the 12 months before the tax period at issue, and claims need written notice within 14 days of an assessment or 10 days of a missed deadline. Ask for both guarantees to be attached to the contract.
For exit, the docs show filed returns and supporting documents stored on each filing, tax breakdown exports by period or line item, and an API export of liability reports as CSV. The terms make the customer responsible for its own data, so export returns, certificates and state portal credentials before the term ends.
Commenda's team does most of it. The switch page lists five steps (consultation, integration, transfer, migration and testing, go-live) and says customers are live in about two weeks on average, 'system dependent', with the first filing cycle inside 30 days (vendor-claimed, checked 10 October 2026).
The one detailed case study is slower. TRX, a NetSuite customer leaving Avalara, took six weeks from kickoff to go-live, and the write-up says the NetSuite integration 'had a number of challenges'. NetSuite tax calculation needs a SuiteScript plugin installed with Commenda's account team.
Plan for a registration review as part of the project. Commenda audits existing state registrations against actual nexus and may recommend closing some, which means dealing with trailing nexus and open liabilities in each state first.
Partly, through the API. Commenda publishes no MCP setup guide or tool list: its docs carried an MCP server section until 8 May 2026, when it was removed, and the official MCP registry lists no Commenda server (checked 11 October 2026). The home page says the product works with Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, so ask Commenda what that connection covers and how it is set up before planning around it.
The documented route is the REST API. With a bearer token from Commenda, an agent can calculate US and UK tax, post transactions, manage customers and exemption certificates, create registrations and read filing calendars and liability reports. Keys are issued by Commenda's team, and rate limits are not published.
Filing stays with people. The docs describe a Commenda advisor drafting the return, the customer approving it and the advisor submitting it. The in-app Chat is beta and, per the changelog of 24 July 2026, answered questions only at launch; the home page now advertises taking actions by asking, which the changelog does not yet confirm.
