Stripe Tax calculates and collects sales tax, VAT and GST on Stripe payments, invoices and subscriptions, and its subscription plan adds registrations and return filing, for businesses that already bill through Stripe.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
For a business already on Stripe, setup is a Dashboard page (head office address, default product tax code, tax behavior, registrations) and a toggle or one automatic_tax parameter, with a separate sandbox configuration for testing (set-up and testing docs). The real work is elsewhere: existing subscriptions must be migrated, each product needs the right tax code, and Stripe quotes 30 days or less for a US registration, 60 in December through February. Filing setup needs a US bank account and a TaxJar review.
Stripe documents a hosted first-party MCP server at mcp.stripe.com with OAuth, generic read and write tools and a published method list that includes tax settings, tax codes, tax registrations and tax calculations (docs.stripe.com/mcp, read 9 October 2026). The server is in the official MCP registry and its OAuth metadata is live. It loses points because filing, registration requests, tax transactions and report exports are outside the list, and the Tax pages describe no AI inside the product itself.
Stripe publishes both plans, all four Tax Complete tiers, every overage rate and a country table of extra registration and filing fees (pricing page and support article, read 9 October 2026). It is marked down because a Tax Complete bill has four separate meters plus non-US surcharges, fees apply even when the tax is zero or the invoice goes unpaid, and pricing above 5,000 transactions a month is by quote.
The API allows 100 requests a second in live mode and 25 per endpoint (rate limits doc), and Stripe states 99.999 percent historical uptime for its services, a vendor claim. Published Tax Complete tiers stop at 5,000 transactions and 50,000 calculation calls a month, after which pricing is custom. Connect platforms can run tax for connected accounts, but each Stripe account can use only one tax provider and third-party tax apps do not work with Connect.
The supported-countries doc lists 104 locations, 42 for all product types and 62 for digital products only, and the tax code list holds more than 600 product categories (read 9 October 2026). Coverage is thinner than the enterprise engines: no exemption certificate management, calculation only where a registration is active, monitoring that ignores physical presence, and direct filing limited to the US, Canada's simplified GST/HST and Irish non-Union OSS.
Stripe's support plans page says all customers get 24x7 phone, email and chat (read 11 October 2026). The paid Growth, Premium and Enterprise plans add priority routing and a 15-minute critical response SLA, and only Premium and Enterprise add a technical account manager. Tax Complete lists priority support from Taxually and TaxJar, so filing questions sit with partners and US filing changes go through a request form with a three business day reply. The terms rule out audit support. The score rests on Stripe's own pages, with no review-site rating behind it.
Stripe's security docs say SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II reports are produced annually and available on request, with a public SOC 3, role-based access and an exportable security history (read 11 October 2026). The docs do not say whether Stripe Tax or the TaxJar filing service is inside those reports, and TaxJar's own security page names SOC 2 Type II only. The Stripe Tax terms, last modified 28 September 2026, cut the other way: no audit support, no liability for accuracy or penalties, and draft filings deemed approved at the deadline. Exemption certificates are not validated, and reverse charge applies on tax ID format whatever the government check returns.
Inside Stripe the fit is native across Billing, Checkout, Invoicing, Payment Links and Connect. Outside it, Stripe documents connectors for WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce, a Shopify import app in public preview, a CSV import in preview and the Tax API for other processors (docs read 9 October 2026). There is no documented tax connector for NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online or Xero; a NetSuite tax connector was only previewed at Sessions on 29 April 2026.

Stripe Tax is a calculation engine that already sits inside Stripe Billing, Checkout, Invoicing and Payment Links. A Dashboard toggle or one API parameter turns it on, and it watches Stripe sales against registration thresholds at no charge. The Tax Complete plan bundles a set number of registrations and filings a year: Stripe registers US remote sellers itself, TaxJar (a Stripe company, acquisition announced April 2021) files US returns in 46 state-level locations, and Taxually handles most other countries. Prices are published up to 5,000 transactions a month, from 0.5 percent per transaction on Tax Basic to $1,500 a month on the top Tax Complete tier (checked 11 October 2026); above that the price is by quote.
The catch is how little stands behind the numbers. Stripe's Tax terms (last modified 28 September 2026) say the service includes no audit support, disclaim liability for calculation accuracy and any resulting penalties, and treat a draft return as approved once the review deadline passes. The engine returns zero tax anywhere you have not added a registration. It does not collect or validate exemption certificates. Threshold monitoring only sees Stripe-processed or imported sales and assumes one default product tax code. Sales that start in an ERP or another processor need the Tax API at 50 cents a transaction, a connector, or a CSV import that is still in preview.
Before signing a Tax Complete contract, confirm in writing which tier's four caps (transactions, calculation API calls, registrations and filings) fit your volumes and what each overage costs. Ask for the per-country fee on every non-US registration and filing you expect, because those are charged on top of the plan and still use up its allowance. Confirm who files and who remits in each jurisdiction: TaxJar, Taxually, Stripe directly or a separately priced partner. Get the custom rate in writing if you exceed 5,000 transactions a month, and note that the 1-year commitment is non-refundable and that an upgrade starts a new annual term.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Stripe Tax works out sales tax, VAT or GST from the customer's location, the product tax code and your registrations, inside Billing, Checkout, Invoicing and Payment Links. It applies reverse charge when a business customer supplies a tax ID. It returns zero wherever you have not added a registration, so the registration list drives everything.
The monitoring tool compares Stripe-processed sales, less refunds, with each location's registration threshold and sends Dashboard and email alerts. It assumes every sale uses your default product tax code and it skips your home state or country, so treat an alert as a prompt for review. Sales from other channels need a CSV import, the Shopify app or the Tax API to be counted.
On Tax Complete an eligible remote seller clicks Register for me and Stripe's tax team prepares and submits the application, then adds the registration to the Dashboard. The service excludes states where you have physical presence, have received a notice or have acquired a business. Registrations in other countries go through Taxually.
Tax Complete creates a TaxJar account from inside Stripe and files each return from your collected tax, applying prepayments and timely-filing discounts. Stripe emails a summary each month; change requests are due before the 6th at 6 PM Eastern and filing starts as early as the 7th. TaxJar debits a US bank account to remit.
The Tax API calculates tax for any processor or in-house invoicing system and records the result as a tax transaction, which then feeds monitoring, reports and filing. Shipping origin addresses are only available through this API. It is a developer project, and each call in a registered location is billable.
Stripe registers and files Irish non-Union OSS for businesses with no EU establishment and Canada's simplified GST/HST for non-residents, both quarterly. Stripe submits the return and then sends payment instructions, so you pay the authority yourself. Union OSS, IOSS, normal GST/HST and provincial taxes fall to Taxually or another partner.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Pay as you go on Billing, Checkout, Invoicing and Payment Links, charged on the full amount including tax and only where you are registered. Monitoring, calculation and collection; no registrations or filing.
For payments created through Stripe's payment APIs or another processor. Each transaction includes 10 calculation API calls; extra calls cost $0.05 each.
200 transactions and 2,000 calculation API calls a month, 2 registrations and 4 filings a year. Adds registration and filing through Stripe, TaxJar and Taxually.
1,000 transactions and 10,000 calculation API calls a month, 4 registrations and 12 filings a year.
2,500 transactions and 25,000 calculation API calls a month, 6 registrations and 20 filings a year.
5,000 transactions and 50,000 calculation API calls a month, 10 registrations and 32 filings a year.
Above 5,000 transactions, 50,000 calculation calls, 10 registrations or 32 filings. Stripe also offers custom pricing for large payment volume or high-value transactions.
Per extra transaction: $0.50, $0.48, $0.46 and $0.35 across the four tiers. Per extra calculation call: $0.05, or $0.04 on the top tier. Charged after the billing period ends.
Per registration beyond the plan allowance; Colombia is $1,200. US remote-seller registrations are done by Stripe, others by Taxually.
Charged on every registration outside the US even inside the plan allowance, and the registration still counts toward that allowance.
Per filing beyond the plan allowance. US and Canadian filings inside the allowance carry no additional fee.
Added on top of the plan: $45 monthly or $145 quarterly and OSS for most countries and EU-based businesses, $145 to $445 where fiscal representation is needed, Morocco $245, Mexico $945, Japan $4,745. Overages run $100 to $4,800. EC Sales Lists and Intrastat reports count as separate filings.
The Stripe Tax terms (last modified 28 September 2026, read 9 October 2026) state that the services do not include audit support and that Stripe does not provide tax advice. They disclaim liability for the accuracy of the service and for any fine, penalty or back taxes that result from using it. A draft filing counts as approved once you approve it or the approval deadline passes, and Stripe says it will not independently verify your tax information. Peers such as Avalara advertise audit liaison support on some plans, so price in an outside advisor if you need that cover.
Stripe's docs (read 9 October 2026) say a calculation returns zero tax without an active registration in the customer's location, and the reason code for that case is shared with products marked non-taxable. Subscriptions created before setup do not collect tax until they are migrated to automatic tax. Manual invoices and transactions on manual tax rates are also left out of filings. Check the registration list and the subscription migration page before the first invoice run.
Each Tax Complete tier has four limits and each has its own overage rate, from 35 to 50 cents per transaction to $55 per extra US filing (support article, read 9 October 2026). Stripe's subscription policy, last updated 1 July 2026, says fees are non-refundable with no prorated refund on cancellation. An upgrade cancels the current plan, starts a new annual commitment and drops any unused allowance. Fees also apply when the calculated tax is zero or the invoice is never paid.
Stripe's pricing article (read 11 October 2026) adds a fee to every registration outside the US ($150, or $1,050 in Colombia) and to every filing outside the US and Canada, and those still count against the plan allowance. Most countries are $45 for a monthly return and $145 for a quarterly or OSS return, non-EU businesses needing fiscal representation pay $145 to $445, Mexico is $945 and Japan $4,745. EC Sales Lists and Intrastat reports are billed as separate filings. Build the country list before choosing a tier.
Stripe's zero-tax doc (read 9 October 2026) says Stripe Tax does not validate documentation supporting an exemption, such as exemption certificates, and points to a third-party app, EXEMPTAX, for collecting them. Separately, the tax ID doc says Stripe Tax applies reverse charge or a zero rate when a tax ID has the right format, regardless of the government verification result. Checkout-time verification against government databases was only previewed on 29 April 2026. Sellers with many resale or exempt customers need a certificate process outside Stripe.
Per Stripe's filing docs (read 9 October 2026), US returns go through a TaxJar account created from the Dashboard, which needs a US bank account for remittance. Stripe itself files only Canada's simplified GST/HST and Irish non-Union OSS, and for those it does not debit your account: you pay the authority from its instructions. Everything else runs through the Taxually app, with its own account and documents, or through Marosa and Hands-off Sales Tax at their own prices. One Stripe account can also use only one tax calculation provider.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Yes. Stripe runs a hosted, first-party MCP server at mcp.stripe.com, documented at docs.stripe.com/mcp and listed in the official MCP registry as com.stripe/mcp (checked 9 October 2026). It serves the whole Stripe account; there is no separate Stripe Tax server. Stripe also ships an agent plugin, installed through its CLI, that configures the server and its skills for common coding agents.
Scope: Read and write. Two generic tools, stripe_api_read and stripe_api_write, call a published list of API methods. The tax methods on that list are: retrieve and update tax settings, list and retrieve tax codes, list, retrieve, create and update tax registrations, and create and retrieve tax calculations with their line items. Tax transactions and reversals, report exports, Register for me requests and filing setup do not appear on the list. Stripe requires a human to approve certain write actions, such as refunds, through a confirmation link.
Turnkey: Yes for interactive use. A user adds the server URL or the Stripe connector in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code, signs in with OAuth and chooses which live accounts or sandboxes to expose. An administrator can switch MCP access on or off for the whole team, separately for live mode and sandboxes, and revoke sessions. From 31 October 2026 the server stops accepting full-access secret keys and untagged restricted keys, so unattended agents need a new agent API key.
In-product AI: the Stripe Tax pages read on 9 October 2026 describe no AI feature inside the product, such as automatic product classification or return preparation. The product tax code doc instead carries written guidance for AI agents: treat each tax code identifier as an exact string, never guess one from a description, and leave the legal classification to the user. A live calculation call is also billable where a registration is active, so an agent that loops on calculations has a cost.
API version 2026-09-30 adds performance locations so tax on tickets is calculated from the venue address, along with new tax types and a failed-calculation error code.
Stripe's published roadmap lists filing-ready, audit-ready reports for general availability in Q4 2026 and automatic remittance to tax authorities through Stripe Treasury as a Q4 private preview. An integrated e-invoicing offer with Billit was slated for Q2.
At Sessions 2026 Stripe said US filing, status tracking and filing details are now in the Dashboard, powered by TaxJar. It previewed Tax connectors for Shopify and NetSuite and checkout-time tax ID verification against government databases.
API version 2025-11-17 lets a Payment Intent calculate tax and commit the tax transaction at capture, removing the separate API calls custom checkouts needed before.
API version 2025-10-29 adds a provider field so Checkout Sessions, Invoices and Quotes can be taxed by an installed third-party app. Stripe's docs list Anrok and Avalara as the supported apps.
At Sessions 2025 Stripe said Tax now supports global registration and filing and collects in 102 countries, up from 57 a year earlier.
There are two published plans (checked 9 October 2026). Tax Basic has no monthly fee: 0.5 percent of each no-code transaction in places where you are registered, or 50 cents per transaction through the Tax API. It covers monitoring, calculation and collection only.
Tax Complete adds registrations and filing. It costs $90, $430, $1,000 or $1,500 a month on a 1-year contract, and each tier caps transactions, calculation API calls, registrations a year and filings a year. The $430 tier includes 1,000 transactions a month, 4 registrations and 12 filings a year.
A worked example (Audit Friendly estimate from the published rates): a seller with 1,000 taxed invoices a month that files quarterly in six states sits on the $430 tier, $5,160 a year, and needs 24 filings against 12 included. Twelve extra US filings at $55 add $660, for about $5,820 a year before state fees. Filings outside the US carry extra fees, from $45 for a monthly European return to $4,745 for Japan.
Tax Basic has no commitment. Tax Complete is an annual contract paid monthly that renews automatically. Under Stripe's subscription policy (last updated 1 July 2026) fees are non-refundable, a cancellation takes effect at the end of the term, and the account then drops to pay-as-you-go pricing and loses unused allowances. An upgrade starts a new annual commitment; a downgrade waits until the term ends.
Tax data leaves as CSV through itemized and summarized exports, which cover every location and can be downloaded from the Dashboard, with daily, weekly or monthly email reminders when a new period is ready. Location reports for US and Canadian registrations can only be viewed in the Dashboard; Stripe's docs say they cannot be downloaded or scheduled (read 11 October 2026). Tax transactions are also readable through the API. Completed US returns sit in the TaxJar filing history reached from the Dashboard; returns filed elsewhere sit with Taxually or the partner that filed them.
Stripe's Tax terms make you responsible for keeping copies of tax data for the period the law requires, so export filing records on a schedule and before cancelling. Registrations are filed with each tax authority on your behalf under a limited power of attorney, so the duty to file continues after you leave and needs a new arrangement.
Turning on calculation is quick for a business already on Stripe. Someone in finance confirms the head office address, picks a default product tax code and tax behavior, and adds registrations in the Dashboard; a toggle or one API parameter then enables automatic tax. Sandboxes carry their own tax settings for testing. Existing subscriptions must be migrated before they collect tax.
Registrations and filing set the real timeline. Stripe says its tax team typically completes a US registration in 30 days or less, and 60 days or less in December, January and February. For US filing, TaxJar reviews each application and may ask for more information within two weeks; you need a US bank account, state tax IDs and filing frequencies.
A developer is needed only for the Tax API, a custom checkout or subscription migration. Outside the US, expect a separate Taxually account and document upload. Stripe publishes no formal onboarding plan or timeline for Tax Complete.
Partly, and without custom code. Stripe documents a hosted MCP server at mcp.stripe.com that connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other clients with an OAuth sign-in (docs read 9 October 2026). Its generic read and write tools reach a published list of API methods that includes tax settings, tax codes, tax registrations and tax calculations.
So an agent can check where you are registered, add a registration you already hold, look up a product tax code and test what tax an order would carry. It cannot request a new registration from Stripe, set up or adjust a filing, or pull exports and filing history, because those are Dashboard, TaxJar or Taxually tasks outside the method list.
Two cautions. Live calculation calls are billable where you are registered, so keep agent testing in a sandbox. And from 31 October 2026 the MCP server stops accepting full-access secret keys, so unattended agents need one of Stripe's new agent API keys, which fall under approval rules.
