The median controller posting in the San Francisco Bay Area advertises $175,000 to $200,000 as of August 2026, which is the richest controller band in any market we track at Audit Friendly - for reference, Washington DC came in at $150,000 to $176,800 when we measured it a few days ago. We're following 1,590 active accounting and finance postings across the Bay Area as of August 2026, and the pattern running through all of them is that tech money sets the price for everyone here, including the accountants who never set foot in a tech company. The medical device firm, the mid-tier CPA firm, the hospital system - they're all bidding against Google for the same senior accountant, so they pay like it.
Median posted ranges from our live data: staff accountants sit at $73,112 to $82,514 (across 75 postings), senior accountants at $96,500 to $125,000 (64 postings), accounting managers at $128,112 to $180,000 (50), and controllers at that $175,000 to $200,000 band (60). Financial analysts, the single biggest role in the market at 96 postings, run $94,200 to $135,000.
The one that made me double-check the query: FP&A analyst postings carry a median band of $160,000 to $197,000 across 39 postings, which is more than most markets pay a finance manager. That's the tech effect in its purest form - Bay Area companies treat FP&A as a strategic hire and price it like one, and if you can build a driver-based forecast you are worth a hell of a lot more here than your title suggests.
Look at the gaps between rungs, because that's the real story. Staff to senior is roughly $23,000 at the floor, senior to manager another $30,000 or so, and manager to controller nearly $50,000. The ladder here is steeper than almost anywhere, which means tenure in this market compounds in a way it just doesn't in cheaper cities. Role-by-role medians live in our salary insights tool if you want to benchmark your own title, and our look at the highest-paying cities for accountants shows how the Bay Area stacks up against the rest of the map.
Google leads our current data with 39 active accounting and finance postings, and the rest of the top of the list reads like the region's economy: Amazon at 19, Abbott at 18, OpenAI and Workday at 14 each, with Waymo and Adobe close behind. H&R Block's regional operations account for 47. And the accounting firms that show up in volume are the mid-tier - Armanino, the homegrown San Francisco firm, and Baker Tilly at a dozen postings each - because the Big 4 hire here too, they just don't out-post the tech giants' internal finance orgs.
Which is worth sitting with if you're job hunting: the biggest accounting employers in the Bay Area are companies that make software, cars, and medical devices, and their corporate accounting teams pay tech-adjacent money for what is recognizably normal accounting work. Revenue recognition at a SaaS company is still revenue recognition, you're just doing it with better pay and a worse commute.
About 69% of Bay Area postings in our data disclose a salary range, one of the highest rates we see anywhere - DC, with its own transparency law, manages 52%. California's SB 1162 is doing the work here, since it requires any employer with 15 or more employees to print the pay scale on the posting. We've written about which states make employers show you the number, and California candidates are playing the game with the cards face up. Use that - you can build a real comparable set before you ever talk to a recruiter, which is leverage most of the country still doesn't get.
Now the honest part, because a $78,000 staff accountant salary that would feel comfortable in Dallas gets eaten alive by Bay Area housing, and pretending otherwise would be bullshit. At the bottom of the ladder the SF premium over national pay is maybe 10-15%, while the cost of living premium is a lot more than that, so early-career accountants here are genuinely paying tuition in rent for access to this market. The premium only outruns the rent once you're senior - by the controller and FP&A tiers you're clearing enough over other markets that the math flips decisively your way.
Worth knowing too: about 17% of Bay Area postings explicitly flag hybrid schedules, and the fully remote roles get posted as remote jobs rather than SF jobs, so the local listings mostly come with the local commute attached.
Early career, I'd still come, but I'd come with a plan - take the seat where the mentorship and the employer name are strongest, treat that $73,000 to $82,514 staff band as a floor, and ask for the top of the range, because the band is printed right there and the employer expects the conversation. Mid-career, aim at the manager-and-up tiers where the market outruns everyone else, and if you're anywhere near FP&A skills, lean into them hard, because this is the one metro where that specialty out-earns its title by the widest margin. Either way, the live postings on our job board link straight to employer career pages, updated daily, no recruiter middlemen.
Audit Friendly's database shows 1,590 active accounting and finance postings across the San Francisco Bay Area as of August 2026, making it one of the largest markets we track.
The median posted range is $73,112 to $82,514, based on 75 staff accountant postings with disclosed pay in our data. Senior accountants post at $96,500 to $125,000.
The median posted band is $175,000 to $200,000 across 60 controller postings - the highest controller range of any metro in our database.
Most do. About 69% of Bay Area postings in our data disclose a range, driven by California's SB 1162, which requires employers with 15 or more employees to include a pay scale in every posting.
Roughly 17% of local postings explicitly flag hybrid schedules, per Audit Friendly data as of August 2026, and fully remote roles are generally posted as remote jobs rather than San Francisco jobs, so the metro listings largely assume you'll be commuting.
The Bay Area is expensive, competitive, and completely unapologetic about both, and it's also the one accounting market where the ceiling keeps going up the longer you stay. Pick your rung, know your band, and go ask for the top of it.
