The San Francisco Bay Area pays accountants more than any other metro in Audit Friendly's data as of July 2026, at every rung from staff to controller. A Bay Area controller sits at a median of about $189,700, versus $162,500 in New York and $138,100 in Chicago. But if you are early in your career, where you live barely moves your paycheck - the location premium is small when you are junior and it gets big, fast, the higher you climb.

These numbers come from Audit Friendly's own hiring data: 32,613 salary-disclosing accounting and finance postings across 109 metros, pulled from our live board of roughly 68,800 active jobs. Every figure below is a median, and every city cell I quote has at least 60 postings behind it, so we are not reading tea leaves off a handful of listings.

Which city pays accountants the most?

Hold the job title constant and the Bay Area wins basically everywhere. For a senior accountant - the busy mid-career role most people actually search - we compared median pay across seven large metros.

So the priciest coastal names lead, no surprise. What is worth sitting with is the size of the gap: top to bottom across those seven metros is $20,000, or about 22%. Real money, sure. But notice it is one role. The moment you change the seniority, the whole story changes.

Location barely matters until you are senior

This is the part nobody tells you when they say "move to a big city for the money." At the bottom of the ladder, the city you pick is almost noise. At the top, it is one of the biggest levers you have. Across US metros, the gap between the best- and worst-paying city grows with every step up the ladder: about 18% for staff accountants and about 37% for controllers.

The location premium roughly doubles between your first job and running the accounting function. A staff accountant who relocates from Dallas to the Bay Area is chasing maybe seven or eight grand before rent eats it. A controller making the same move is looking at fifty grand of median difference, and the Bay Area controller spread runs from $140,000 at the 25th percentile up to about $223,500 at the 75th, so the ceiling is real.

Which flips the usual advice on its head. Early on, damn near everything - the reps you get, the systems you touch, whether you land a CPA - matters more than your zip code. Optimize for the work and the title. Chase the geography later, when a single move is worth a controller-sized raise instead of a rounding error. If you want to see where the senior roles actually are right now, that is what the Audit Friendly job board is for.

Remote pays like a strong mid-tier city

Here is the other thing the map hides. A remote US accounting role does not pay like the cheapest metro - it pays like a solid middle-of-the-pack one, and for senior work it beats plenty of onsite cities outright. Remote senior accountants land at a $91,050 median, ahead of onsite Denver. Remote controllers hit $146,850, past onsite Chicago. Remote accounting managers clear $123,875, above onsite Los Angeles, Chicago and Denver.

So the honest read is not that remote pays less. It is that remote quietly detaches your pay from your rent, which if you live somewhere cheap is the best deal on this whole list. We broke the full remote-versus-onsite split down by role over at salary insights if you want the seniority-by-seniority version.

What about nominal versus real pay?

Every number here is nominal - it is the sticker salary, not what is left after the Bay Area takes its cut in rent. A $110,000 senior salary in San Francisco and a $90,000 one in Denver are a lot closer than the gap looks once housing is in the mix, and for a lot of people Denver comes out ahead on what actually lands in the bank. I am not going to hand you a fake cost-of-living index to prove a point - just know the ranking answers "who writes the biggest check," not "where will you feel richest."

And a quick note if you are cross-border shopping: our Toronto and Vancouver staff-accountant medians land around $48,100 and $46,250, but those are converted to US dollars, so do not read them as a straight pay cut against a US city. Different currency, different tax, different everything.

What to do with this

If you are junior, stop stressing about the map and go get better - the raises that compound come from the CPA, the ERP reps and the manager title, not the area code. If you are senior, the map is suddenly one of your biggest bargaining chips, whether that means relocating or using a Bay Area comp band to anchor a remote offer. Either way, walk into the conversation knowing the real medians. Line up your talking points with our interview prep, and if you would rather have someone who knows the market negotiate for you, a specialized accounting recruiter earns their keep most at exactly the senior level where geography swings hardest.

Frequently asked questions

What city pays accountants the most? In Audit Friendly's data the San Francisco Bay Area leads at every level, from a $77,750 staff-accountant median to about $189,700 for a controller, ahead of New York and Los Angeles.

Does moving to an expensive city actually raise an accountant's pay? It depends heavily on seniority. The top-to-bottom metro gap in Audit Friendly's July 2026 data is about 18% for staff accountants and 37% for controllers, so relocation is a rounding error early on and a major raise late.

Do remote accounting jobs pay less than in-office ones? Not really. Remote US roles pay like a strong mid-tier metro - remote controllers ($146,850) and managers ($123,875) beat several onsite cities in Audit Friendly's July 2026 data, which is a great deal if you live somewhere with low rent.

Are these salaries adjusted for cost of living? No. Every figure is a nominal median of disclosed pay. A high-cost metro's lead shrinks, and sometimes reverses, once you factor in housing.
