Zero. That's how many of the 53 live payroll specialist postings we track in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are remote, and it's the number I'd tape to your monitor before you start applying, because it tells you the whole search is going to happen inside the metroplex, on a commute, against a lot of other people who also want to stay in Dallas.
This comes out of Audit Friendly's own job database, the one where we clean the listings, strip out most of the recruiter noise, and link straight to the employer's career page, so the numbers below are what employers actually posted as of September 2026 and not somebody's survey of what they wish they'd paid.
Right now we're tracking 53 active, de-duplicated payroll specialist postings across DFW from 41 different employers, which is a healthier spread than it sounds because payroll hiring in this market is not one giant company hoovering up everybody. The biggest single poster is Insperity with 6 openings, about 11% of the total, and Northrop Grumman shows up with 3, and after that it's mostly one-offs from aerospace services, healthcare, engineering firms and staffing agencies. If you want to see what's open today, the live listings sit on the Audit Friendly job board, because postings expire and this article shouldn't.
Only 22 of the 53 postings (42%) put a salary in writing, which is annoying, but among those the median midpoint is about $66,500, with the 25th percentile around $64,800 and the 75th around $73,000. So the middle half of disclosed pay lives inside roughly an eight-thousand-dollar window, and honestly that's the most interesting thing in the data, because a flat range means employers have a going rate and they're sticking to it. Negotiating hard on a base salary in this niche is going to get you a couple thousand dollars, and you'll get further by negotiating on title, scope and the systems you'll own.
For context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics put the mean wage for payroll and timekeeping clerks in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area at $54,640 in its May 2023 data. That occupation category is broader and skews more junior than a specialist title and the figure is a few years old, so I'd read the gap between it and our $66,500 as the difference between clerks and specialists plus a couple of years of wage growth, and not as a discrepancy to worry about.
About 21 of the 53 postings (roughly 40%) mention the Certified Payroll Professional credential, usually as a preferred qualification and not a hard requirement, which makes it one of the few cheap levers you can pull. If you're already doing the work and don't have the letters, put it on your list for the next twelve months, because when four in ten employers in one metro are naming a credential it's doing real work in the screening pile.
Degrees are a softer filter than you'd guess: 28 postings (53%) mention a bachelor's, which means nearly half of them don't, and payroll is one of those corners of accounting where two years running a multi-state run beats a diploma more often than people admit.
Excel appears in 42 of the 53 postings (about 79%), so if your pivot tables are shaky fix that first, and it isn't glamorous but it's the single most common skill listed. On the platform side Workday is named in 14 postings, ADP in 11 and UKG or Kronos in 10, which tells you the market is split three ways and none of them is a lock. Multi-state payroll comes up in 17 postings (about 32%), and in Texas, with no state income tax, that mostly means companies with employees scattered across other states and a payroll person who can keep Oklahoma, California and Colorado straight at the same time.
If you can only learn one thing in the next month, learn to talk fluently about multi-state withholding and a reconciliation you've personally cleaned up, because those two stories cover a big chunk of what these postings are really screening for.
I'd stop looking for remote payroll jobs if Dallas is where you want to live, and I say that having written about the fact that only about 1 in 11 payroll jobs is remote nationally, so the Dallas zero isn't a fluke, it's an extreme version of a pattern. I'd pick five employers from the postings that you'd actually want to work for, go to their career pages directly, and apply there, because a direct application skips the recruiter layer that we work hard to filter out of our own data. I'd compare notes with people in neighboring markets too, since the Phoenix payroll market and the Toronto payroll market each have their own quirks and looking at all three shows you what's local and what's just payroll.
And build something small while you search. A one-page reconciliation template, a checklist for a new-hire multi-state setup, a spreadsheet that flags gross-to-net variances between runs - anything you can show, because in a market where the pay is flat and the postings look alike, the person who arrives with a working artifact is the person who gets remembered. If you want the wider picture of who's hiring across accounting, our post on who's actually hiring accountants right now is a good companion.
As of September 2026 we track 53 active payroll specialist postings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area from 41 employers, and the count moves daily as jobs are posted and filled.
In our data the median midpoint of disclosed pay is about $66,500 across 22 postings that list a salary, with the middle 50% between roughly $64,800 and $73,000. BLS reports a lower $54,640 mean for the broader payroll and timekeeping clerk category in the Dallas area, using May 2023 data.
None of the 53 postings we track in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are remote, so a Dallas payroll search is an on-site or hybrid search.
Not for most of them, but about 40% of the postings mention the Certified Payroll Professional credential, usually as a preference, so it helps.
Excel first, then Workday, ADP and UKG or Kronos, which appear in that order of frequency in our Dallas postings, plus comfort with multi-state payroll.
Payroll is one of the steadier corners of accounting and it's rarely written about with real numbers, so go pull the actual postings, pick your five, and get a direct application in this week.
