Bloomberg Tax Research is Bloomberg Industry Group's tax research platform. It pairs practitioner-written Tax Management Portfolios, Daily Tax Report news and primary sources with cited AI answers, for large CPA firms, law firms and corporate tax departments.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
The Portfolios page cites more than 500 Tax Management Portfolios by more than 1,100 practitioners, including over 200 federal and nearly 100 estates, gifts and trusts titles (captured 29 December 2025). The research page adds coverage of more than 220 countries, a treaty tool with more than 3,000 documents and payroll content for nearly 100 countries (captured 3 October 2026). Daily Tax Report covers federal, state and international developments, and the vendor says it monitors more than 2,000 state tax department websites. No time commitment for analysis of new legislation is published.
The IRS chose Bloomberg Tax as its research tool under a multi-year contract (CPA Practice Advisor, 5 November 2020), and a Justice Department notice covers 350 Tax Division users (SAM.gov, 9 August 2024). The vendor says 87 percent of the top 100 accounting firms use Bloomberg Tax (home page, captured 8 October 2026). Access is licensed to named users with shared logins barred, and the vendor publishes no seat tiers or caps on AI questions.
There is nothing to convert or map. The vendor promises instant access to the research platform once the customer is ready to go, followed by onboarding from its team (getting started page, captured 4 May 2026). The path in is a demo request and a sales conversation, and the vendor's pages show no self-serve trial or online checkout. A large firm still has to plan named-user setup and training on Chart Builders, trackers and the AI tools.
Research users get 24/7 phone support, live chat inside the product and an online help center, with separate phone lines for the US, for Europe and other regions, and for Asia Pacific (getting started and help center pages, as archived on 4 May 2026). The vendor says 93 percent of calls are answered in under 20 seconds, which is its own figure for its whole response team. No paid support tier and no independent measure of response quality is published.
AI answers link to the Portfolios and primary sources they draw on, and the vendor says the AI abstains when no content covers a question (AI approach page, captured 4 May 2026). Bloomberg Industry Group's trust center lists SOC 1 and SOC 2 reports, a penetration test report and a SIG Lite, with documents behind an access request (captured 5 October 2026). Its overview describes the tax software products and leaves the research platform unnamed, so report scope needs confirming. A data processing addendum for Bloomberg Tax Research is published.
In the product, Bloomberg Tax Answers summarizes each search with citations and the AI Assistant handles follow-up chat, saved history, jurisdiction filters and comparison charts at no additional charge (releases of 10 March and 15 July 2025). Deep Thinking Mode and document upload were shown in March 2026. Outside the product there is no public API, no MCP server and no connector in Claude's directory or the official MCP registry (checked 11 October 2026). The Customer Agreement, as archived on 29 December 2025, also bars automated access.
Research feeds Bloomberg's own suite. The 18 March 2024 launch release says Bloomberg Tax Workpapers integrates with Research, and the vendor's AI page, as archived on 24 June 2025, says AI answers, rates and citations appear inside Workpapers. An embedded research assistant for Bloomberg Tax Provision was announced on 3 August 2026, and the Credits and Incentives tool is powered by Incentify, a referral partner named in the vendor's 4 November 2024 release (research page, as archived on 3 October 2026). The vendor documents no link into third-party tax prep software, no Word or Outlook add-in and no public API, so moving an answer into a memo or a return workpaper outside that suite is manual.
The research product is quote only behind a Request Pricing form. A small-firm package is reported to start at $2,200 a year (Bizora, a competitor, checked 11 October 2026), and Vendr's $10,360 median is for Bloomberg Industry Group as a supplier, with no separate tax product and no sample size shown. The Customer Agreement, as archived on 29 December 2025, lets the vendor revise fees at the end of each term and asks customers to keep the agreement and order form confidential, which limits what buyers can compare.
Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.
The purchase is the library. Bloomberg Tax Research carries more than 500 Tax Management Portfolios written by more than 1,100 tax practitioners (Portfolios page, as archived on 29 December 2025), plus Daily Tax Report news, primary sources, state Chart Builders and coverage of more than 220 countries (vendor release of 19 October 2020 and the research page as archived on 3 October 2026). Bloomberg Tax Answers and the chat-based AI Assistant sit on top of that content and cite it. Both are included at no additional charge, per the 10 March 2025 release. The vendor's support pages, as archived on 4 May 2026, promise research users 24/7 phone support and live chat.
The catch is commercial. Pricing is quote only, and the Bloomberg Industry Group Customer Agreement, as archived on 29 December 2025, sets a default two-year term that renews for two more years unless notice is given 30 days ahead. The same agreement bars automated access and bars putting product content into prompts for any language model without written consent. The research platform links into Bloomberg's own Workpapers and Provision tools. The vendor documents no link into tax prep software, no Word or Outlook add-in and no public API.
Before signing, get these points in writing. The term and renewal mechanics on the order form, including any cap on the renewal increase. The named-user count and what happens when staff change. Whether the firm may use excerpts in its own AI tools, since the default answer is no. And the scope of the SOC 2 report: the public trust center overview describes Bloomberg's tax software products and leaves the research platform unnamed.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Chart Builders let a user pick topics such as apportionment, filing requirements or penalties and line up the states side by side, with links into the Portfolios. In a vendor survey of 293 users (article dated 17 June 2024, as archived in February 2025), respondents reported saving 3.7 hours and $7,136 on average. The figures are self-reported by the vendor's own customers.
Each Portfolio pairs detailed analysis with working papers: checklists, IRS materials, sample plans and clauses. Victaulic's corporate tax manager told the vendor that the team now researches a question, writes a position paper and reaches a conclusion before asking an outside advisor to review (case study dated 3 August 2021). That is a vendor-published customer story.
Bloomberg Tax Answers puts an AI summary with citations above the normal search results, and the AI Assistant takes follow-up questions with a jurisdiction filter. The 84 percent figure comes from the vendor's survey of 293 of its own users (article dated 17 June 2024, as archived in February 2025). The vendor itself advises checking every AI answer against primary sources.
International content includes Country Portfolios for more than 48 regimes, Transfer Pricing Portfolios, withholding and VAT chart builders and a treaty comparison tool with more than 3,000 treaty documents (vendor pages, as archived on 29 December 2025 and 3 October 2026). A tax team can compare treaty articles across partners without opening each treaty.
Compliance Tracker, a workflow tool inside the research platform, gathers forms and due dates and sends alerts. A 21 November 2024 release extended it to income tax obligations in over 200 countries, monthly VAT forms for more than 100 countries and US sales and use forms. In March 2026 the vendor showed an AI Assistant inside the tracker.
Daily Tax Report covers federal, state and international developments, with trackers and custom alerts by topic. The vendor says it monitors more than 2,000 state tax department websites to collect and summarize changes (AI approach page, captured 4 May 2026). Since July 2025 the AI Assistant can answer questions about a news article in place.
Forget the 40-row feature grid. Pick a finance workflow and see how this tool and its closest peers actually do it, with our verdict on who wins for whom.
Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Portfolios, news, primary sources, practice tools and the AI features, licensed to named users on an order form. Default term is two years with two-year auto-renewal (Customer Agreement, captured 29 December 2025).
Small-firm package the vendor promoted on 12 August 2026 as AI-enabled research with federal and state resources. The starting price is reported by Bizora, a competitor, and by Physician AI Tools; confirm the price, unit and eligibility with the vendor.
Generative AI search summaries and chat research, available to subscribers at no additional charge per the 10 March and 15 July 2025 releases.
24/7 phone support, live chat and the online help center come with the subscription, per the getting started page (captured 4 May 2026).
The vendor reserves the right to revise fees at the end of each subscription term and commits only to reasonable efforts to notify the customer beforehand (Customer Agreement, captured 29 December 2025).
The Bloomberg Industry Group Customer Agreement, which the Bloomberg Tax Research data processing addendum names as the governing agreement, sets each order form at two years unless the form says otherwise (captured 29 December 2025). It renews for successive two-year periods unless either party gives at least 30 days written notice by email. The vendor may revise fees at the end of each term and promises only reasonable efforts to notify. If the vendor terminates for breach, including non-payment, the charges for the rest of the term fall due. Put the term, the notice date and a renewal cap on the order form.
The Customer Agreement bars using product content in prompts for, or to train or tune, any language model without Bloomberg Industry Group's written consent, which it may withhold or tie to a separate license (captured 29 December 2025). The same agreement bars access by any automated process. On its face that rules out browser agents and home-built retrieval over downloaded content. A firm whose AI policy assumes research content can be pasted into a model needs a written carve-out before signing.
The research product is sold through a Request Pricing form. Vendr's public page shows a median of $10,360 a year for Bloomberg Industry Group as a supplier, naming Bloomberg Law and Bloomberg Government and no separate tax product, with a typical range of $2,573 to $32,928 and no sample size (checked 11 October 2026). A small-firm package is reported to start at $2,200 a year by Bizora, a competitor that calls the figure vendor-stated. The Customer Agreement, as archived on 29 December 2025, asks customers to keep order forms confidential, so peer quotes are hard to obtain. Ask for per-user pricing by content set.
The 18 March 2024 launch release says Bloomberg Tax Workpapers integrates with Research, and an AI research assistant for Bloomberg Tax Provision was announced on 3 August 2026. The vendor's AI page, as archived on 24 June 2025, says AI answers, rates and citations surface inside Workpapers. The Credits and Incentives tool is powered by Incentify (research page, as archived on 3 October 2026). Nothing on the vendor's pages documents a link into CCH Axcess Tax, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, Microsoft Word or Outlook, and there is no public API. A firm on Wolters Kluwer or Thomson Reuters tax software gets tighter research links from those vendors' own libraries.
Bloomberg Industry Group's trust center lists SOC 1, SOC 2, a penetration test report, a security whitepaper, a SIG Lite and an AI FAQ, most behind an access request (captured 5 October 2026). Its overview describes Bloomberg Tax and Accounting Software: Fixed Assets, Income Tax Planner, Tax Provision and Workpapers. The research platform is not named there, and the public page does not say whether the reports are Type 1 or Type 2. A firm that uploads client documents to the AI Assistant should request the reports and confirm scope. A data processing addendum for Bloomberg Tax Research is published.
Bloomberg says its generative AI is grounded in its own content through retrieval and a proprietary guardrail service and abstains when no content covers a question (AI approach page, captured 4 May 2026). The same page says AI-generated responses are never 100 percent trustworthy and advises customers to validate responses against primary sources. The 84 percent figure for finding answers in seconds comes from a vendor survey of 293 of its own users, published on 17 June 2024. No independent benchmark of answer accuracy was found. Build a review step into any workflow that relies on Tax Answers or Deep Thinking Mode.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. No Bloomberg Tax connector appears in Claude's connector directory, the official MCP registry returns nothing for Bloomberg or Bloomberg Tax, and a GitHub search finds no Bloomberg Tax MCP server (checked 11 October 2026). Bloomberg Industry Group does run a documented Bloomberg Law connector for court dockets, which is listed in Claude's directory. An undocumented Bloomberg Tax address on the gateway that serves that connector answered only with a sign-in challenge on 10 October 2026. It has no help page, tool list, announcement or public access, so buyers should treat it as unavailable.
Scope: None. With no documented server and no public API, there is no read or write scope to grade, and nothing lets an agent reach Portfolios, news, primary sources or AI answers. No public research API or developer portal was found. The product's sign-in host disallows every crawler except Google and Bing in robots.txt, and the news site's robots.txt disallows GPTBot, ClaudeBot and other AI crawlers (checked 11 October 2026).
Turnkey: No. Nothing can be switched on from a public listing today. The Bloomberg Law connector needs a Bloomberg Law subscription with MCP connector access enabled, and it covers court dockets, with no tax content. The Customer Agreement, as archived on 29 December 2025, bars access by any automated process and bars using product content in prompts for, or to train, any language model without Bloomberg Industry Group's written consent. Get that consent in writing before pointing Claude or any other agent at Bloomberg Tax content.
In the product: Bloomberg Tax Answers places a cited AI summary above search results. The AI Assistant is a chat tool with follow-up questions, saved history, jurisdiction filters, comparison charts and questions about news articles, included at no additional charge (releases of 10 March and 15 July 2025). In March 2026 the vendor showed Deep Thinking Mode, which plans multi-step research, plus an assistant inside Compliance Tracker and document upload. The vendor says answers are grounded in its own content through retrieval and guardrails and that the AI abstains when no content exists (AI approach page, as archived on 4 May 2026). It also says AI responses are never 100 percent trustworthy and should be checked against primary sources. No independent accuracy test was found.
The vendor's LinkedIn page promoted Bloomberg Tax for Small CPA Firms, described as AI-enabled research with federal and state tax resources in one platform. A starting price of $2,200 a year is reported by third parties.
The next generation of Bloomberg Tax Provision includes an embedded AI-powered Tax Research Assistant that brings Bloomberg Tax research and ASC 740 guidance into the provision workflow.
The parent company bought Regology, an AI regulatory intelligence platform that monitors US federal and state regulations and more than 135 countries, and said it will pair it with Bloomberg Law, Tax and Government content.
Bloomberg Tax announced it would show Deep Thinking Mode, which builds and runs a research plan for multi-step questions, an AI Assistant inside Compliance Tracker and document-based analysis.
The Bloomberg Tax AI Assistant was named a winner of the 2025 CPA Practice Advisor Technology Innovation Award, chosen from 41 entries by an advisory panel, per the vendor.
The upgrade added iterative conversational research, saved chat history, jurisdiction filtering, a chart builder and questions about news articles, across the whole platform, still at no additional cost.
Bloomberg publishes no price for the full research subscription. It is quoted by sales and licensed to named users, and the Customer Agreement, as archived on 29 December 2025, asks customers to keep the agreement and order form confidential.
Two public reference points help. A package for small CPA firms is reported to start at $2,200 a year (Bizora, a competitor that calls the figure vendor-stated; checked 11 October 2026). Vendr reports a median of $10,360 a year for Bloomberg Industry Group as a supplier, on a page that names Bloomberg Law and Bloomberg Government and no separate tax product. Its page shows no sample size, so treat it as a rough guide.
The AI tools do not add a fee. Bloomberg Tax Answers and the AI Assistant are included for subscribers, per the 10 March 2025 release, and the 15 July 2025 release repeats that for the AI Assistant. Ask for a per-user price by practice area, then set it against Blue J's published $1,498 per user a year and the $1,499 store price for CCH AnswerConnect Tax.
The Bloomberg Industry Group Customer Agreement (captured 29 December 2025) sets a default term of two years per order form, renewing for successive two-year periods unless either side gives 30 days written notice by email. The vendor may revise fees at the end of each term. If the vendor terminates for breach, including non-payment, the remaining charges for the term fall due, and the refund policy says delivered products cannot be returned. Negotiate the term on the order form, which overrides the default.
There is little customer data to export, since this is a library. What matters is what the firm may keep. The agreement bars downloading or copying substantial portions, storing content in a retrieval system and sharing more than a de minimis amount with people who are not licensed users. Saved chat history, trackers and alerts live inside the platform, so ask what stays accessible after expiry and get the answer in writing.
There is no implementation project in the usual sense. The vendor says customers get instant access to the research platform once they are ready to go, followed by onboarding from its team (getting started page, captured 4 May 2026).
The elapsed time sits in procurement: a discovery call, a personalized demo and a quote come first, and the vendor's pages show no self-serve trial. Inside the firm, an administrator or librarian assigns named users and a tax lead schedules training on Chart Builders, trackers and the AI Assistant. Research users can call support 24/7 or use live chat in the product.
No. There is no Bloomberg Tax connector in Claude's directory, nothing in the official MCP registry and no public research API (checked 11 October 2026). Bloomberg Industry Group does publish a Bloomberg Law connector, but it covers court dockets and needs a Bloomberg Law subscription with connector access enabled. It does not reach tax content.
The contract is the larger barrier. The Customer Agreement, as archived on 29 December 2025, bars access by any automated process and bars using product content in prompts for any language model without written consent. A firm that wants Claude in its research flow should ask Bloomberg for that consent in writing and should use the built-in AI Assistant until it is in hand.
