CoCounsel Tax is Thomson Reuters' AI assistant for tax research, document review and guided workflows, grounded in Checkpoint content, for US accounting firms and corporate tax teams. Essentials lists at $1,300 a year for one user (published, 10 October 2026).
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Answers draw on Checkpoint, the IRS code and government web sources, and Thomson Reuters added AICPA, FASB, GASB and IFRS content on 5 November 2025. The Tax Research plan includes Checkpoint Edge access and state charts; the Checkpoint Edge page cites 12 million expert-authored content pieces. Essentials uses Checkpoint behind the scenes without library access, and Blue J, a competitor, says non-US IBFD and Orbitax content sits outside the AI research.
It is a browser product with no data conversion. Users sign in with a work email and a one-time code, and firms with a company domain can let staff self-register, per the help center. Admin work is limited to inviting users, setting groups and connecting SharePoint, OneDrive, Box, Suralink or UltraTax CS. Essentials can be bought online; Tax Research starts with a demo.
The Essentials pricing FAQ states SOC 2 Type II compliance, and the Thomson Reuters trust center links a CoCounsel for Tax, Audit & Accounting profile listing SOC 2 and ISO 42001 documents under NDA (checked 11 October 2026). The security help article says data is encrypted with TLS 1.2 and AES-256, prompts are processed in the United States and third-party model calls use zero-retention APIs. Workspaces carry a review status, comments and cited sources per answer. There is no accuracy guarantee: the General Terms (US version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) cap liability at 12 months of charges and say Thomson Reuters is not liable for the accuracy of AI output.
Seats are per user. Essentials limits each user to 20 Checkpoint-backed answers and 10 workspaces a week, and online checkout stops at 10 users. Help pages cap uploads at 2,000 pages or 100 MB per document and the Knowledge Base at 10,000 files per person and 50,000 per company. A Thomson Reuters case study cites 67 active licenses at one firm, and the status page history shows 5 minor CoCounsel incidents between March 2025 and July 2026.
Thomson Reuters lists phone support on weekdays from 9am to 6pm ET, chat from 8am to 6pm CT, an email address, a customer success team, eLearning videos, webinars and instructor-led training (help center and plans page, 10 October 2026). A public status page tracks the product. No response-time commitment is published, and independent review-site evidence for the tax product is thin.
Help pages list 4 document integrations set up by a company admin: Suralink, Box, OneDrive and SharePoint, with SharePoint syncing hourly. An UltraTax CS integration imports clients, syncs return fields for Ready to Advise and sends 1040 and 1120-S preparer copies, though one setup article still labels the print step as coming soon (10 October 2026). Output leaves as Excel, PDF or copied text. No connector to non-Thomson Reuters tax software and no public API is documented.
In-product AI is the whole product: cited answers, multi-document review, code-run calculations that return Excel files, and templates, per the help center (checked 11 October 2026). Outcome figures are vendor-claimed. Outside the product there is nothing to connect to: Thomson Reuters documents no MCP server and no public API for CoCounsel Tax, its help pages for a CoCounsel Tax MCP were removed in early October 2026, and neither the official MCP registry nor Claude's connector directory lists the tax product. The General Terms (US version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) also bar uploading Thomson Reuters content to another professional AI tool.
One plan has a public price: Essentials at $1,300 a year for one user, with online checkout for firms of up to 10 users (plans page, 11 October 2026). The Tax Research add-on is described as priced per user, but Thomson Reuters shows no price for it outside a configured checkout or a quote, and the in-house and Audit & Accounting plans are sold by demo. Ready to Review and Ready to Advise are metered add-ons. Vendr's Thomson Reuters median, $13,784 a year when read on 10 October 2026, mixes many products.
Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.
You are buying an AI workspace on top of Checkpoint. Conversations answer tax questions with citations to Checkpoint, the IRS code and government sources. Workspaces break uploaded returns, K-1s and agreements into answers a reviewer can check, and templates turn a repeat task into a guided workflow. The product grew out of Materia, which Thomson Reuters acquired on 22 October 2024, and launched for tax, audit and accounting firms on 2 June 2025. The Tax Research plan includes Checkpoint Edge access. Essentials leaves it out.
The catch is packaging. Essentials is the only plan with a public price: $1,300 a year for one user, with 20 Checkpoint-backed answers and 10 workspaces per user each week. Unlimited citations, full shared workspaces, Checkpoint Edge access and advanced usage analytics sit in Tax Research, a per-user add-on with no public figure. Blue J publishes $1,498 per user per year with unlimited questions. Integrations stop at SharePoint, OneDrive, Box, Suralink and UltraTax CS. No API or MCP access for outside agents is documented, and the help pages that described a CoCounsel Tax MCP were removed in early October 2026.
Before signing, get in writing: the per-user price of Tax Research and which seats need it; whether state charts come with Essentials (the plans comparison says included, the Essentials FAQ says left out); a cap on renewal increases, since the General Terms allow them with 60 days' notice; and the non-renewal window, 30 days by default. Ask for the SOC 2 Type II report and the ISO 42001 certificate under NDA. Ask whether any API or MCP access exists for the tax product, and note that the General Terms (US version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) bar uploading Thomson Reuters content to another professional AI tool.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Ask in plain language and get an answer cited to Checkpoint, the IRS code and government sources. Follow-up questions keep the context, and the answer can be saved to the client file. The time figure is the vendor's customer story, so test it on a question where the firm already knows the answer.
Upload returns, K-1s, workpapers or deal documents and ask what was claimed, carried forward or looks unusual. Workspaces split a document set into questions with a cited answer, a review status and comments for each. Larger files have to be uploaded in sections.
CoCounsel 3.0 reads a spreadsheet or invoice as structured data, runs code to calculate the schedule and returns a workbook with live formulas and stated assumptions. It can fill a firm's own template and cross-foot totals. A reviewer still has to check the useful lives and elections it assumed.
Turn a research thread into a memo, a client email or an IRS or state notice response with citations attached. Conversation templates keep the format consistent across staff. The saving is a single firm's report in a vendor case study.
Save a completed workspace as a template so the same questions run on every engagement of that type. Thomson Reuters ships public templates and firms can publish their own to a group. Results export to Excel for the file.
Load firm policies, prior workpapers and approved positions into Company Documents, or sync them from SharePoint, OneDrive, Box or Suralink. Staff point a question at those sources with an @ mention. Only administrators can add company documents, and groups control who sees which set.
Forget the 40-row feature grid. Pick a finance workflow and see how this tool and its closest peers actually do it, with our verdict on who wins for whom.
Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Unlimited conversations, 20 Checkpoint-backed responses and 10 workspaces per user per week, document upload and analysis, Knowledge Base integration up to 10,000 documents, templates, clients and projects. Online checkout for firms with up to 10 users. No Checkpoint Edge library access.
Adds Checkpoint Edge access, unlimited Checkpoint citations, state charts, full shared workspaces and advanced usage analytics. Sold as a per-user add-on to Essentials seats or by demo.
Cited multijurisdictional tax analysis grounded in Checkpoint for corporate tax departments. Sold by demo.
Everything in CoCounsel Tax plus estate planning, payroll, pension and benefits content. Sold by demo.
Separate plan with Checkpoint audit and accounting content for audit teams. It excludes Checkpoint tax content and state charts.
Agentic 1040 preparation sold by the number of returns. A return counts once it is e-filed and approved or printed to PDF, and purchased returns must be used within 12 months.
Advisory plans sold by the project. Prospecting clients is free; a generated plan counts toward usage. Use within 12 months of purchase.
US General Terms version 6.0 (last modified 1 September 2026) allow interest of up to 1 percent a month on overdue invoices, with a minimum of 25 dollars per overdue invoice, plus reasonable collection costs.
The Essentials checkout lists unlimited conversations but only 20 Checkpoint-backed responses and 10 workspaces per user per week (plans page, checked 10 October 2026). The plans comparison marks Checkpoint citations and shared workspaces as limited and leaves out Checkpoint Edge access and advanced usage analytics. A preparer who researches daily will hit the cap; document summaries and standard AI chats do not count against it. Budget for the Tax Research add-on on the seats that research for a living.
The Essentials FAQ says the Tax Research module is priced per user, and the plans page offers it by demo; no price for it was public on 11 October 2026. Thomson Reuters' US General Terms (version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) renew for successive one-year terms unless either side gives 30 days' written notice and allow price changes at each renewal with 60 days' notice. Vendr's Thomson Reuters page reported annual escalators of 3 to 7 percent on multi-year contracts across the company's products when read on 10 October 2026. Ask for a written cap on renewal increases before signing.
The plans comparison on tax.thomsonreuters.com marks state charts as included for both Tax Research and Essentials. The Essentials FAQ on the pricing page says deep research tools, eForms and state comparison charts are left out (both read 10 October 2026). Multistate work is a core reason to buy this product, so get the answer in the order form. The FAQ also says Essentials covers tax workflows only, with no audit or accounting version yet.
The security help article says user content and prompts are never used to train AI models and that third-party model calls use zero-retention APIs. The same article says Thomson Reuters may use queries and uploaded documents to improve the product, and that conversations, documents and workspaces are kept for the lifetime of the account unless manually deleted (read 10 October 2026). Processing and hosting are in the United States. Firms with client confidentiality rules should set the document retention option and ask for the GenAI FAQ held in the trust profile.
Audit Friendly read help pages describing a CoCounsel Tax MCP for Checkpoint research on 4 October 2026. By 10 October 2026 those pages had been removed, and on 11 October 2026 the help sitemap listed no MCP page for the tax product. No server appears in the official MCP registry or in Claude's connector directory, and no public API is documented. Thomson Reuters' US General Terms (version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) also bar uploading its content to another professional AI tool and extracting it through APIs, MCPs or AI agents. Do not plan a Claude workflow around this product until Thomson Reuters confirms access in writing.
The help center lists Suralink, Box, OneDrive and SharePoint as the products that integrate with CoCounsel, each set up by a company administrator, and asks firms to email customer success to request others (read 11 October 2026). The UltraTax CS integration imports clients and sends 1040 and 1120-S preparer copies, but one setup article still says the feature is coming soon. No public API is documented. No connector to CCH Axcess, Lacerte or Drake is listed, so firms on those products upload returns as files.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. Thomson Reuters documents no MCP server for CoCounsel Tax as of 11 October 2026. Help pages that described a CoCounsel Tax MCP for Checkpoint research in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and Copilot Studio were online when Audit Friendly reviewed Checkpoint Edge on 4 October 2026; by 10 October 2026 they had been removed, and the help sitemap lists none. The official MCP registry has no CoCounsel or Thomson Reuters server, and the only Thomson Reuters entry in Claude's connector directory is CoCounsel Legal, added in May 2026.
Scope: None documented. With the help pages gone, no tool list is public. The removed pages listed two tools, a cited Checkpoint research question and a feedback rating, with no access to workspaces, uploaded files, clients or projects (Audit Friendly read, 4 October 2026). There is no documented public API for CoCounsel Tax. The Checkpoint Search API on the Thomson Reuters developer portal is offered to Checkpoint Edge customers through sales, and its page was last updated on 16 December 2022.
Turnkey: No. There is no public setup guide, directory listing or stated entitlement, so nothing can be switched on today. The contract also limits what an outside agent may do with the content. Thomson Reuters' US General Terms (version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) bar customers from uploading Thomson Reuters content to a third-party professional AI tool and from using APIs, MCPs or AI agents to extract that content from the services. Get written approval before routing Checkpoint answers into Claude or any other outside agent.
In the product: Conversations answer tax questions with citations to Checkpoint, the IRS code and selected web sources. Workspaces turn uploaded documents into reviewable answers with a Deep Dive view of each source. CoCounsel 3.0 runs code to build Excel schedules with live formulas, per the help center. Thomson Reuters says elements of CoCounsel run on OpenAI models and that it works with Claude, GPT and Gemini. The 32 percent time-saved figure is self-reported by surveyed customers and has not been independently verified, according to Thomson Reuters' own footnote.
Thomson Reuters and Suralink announced integrations that bring client-provided documents into CoCounsel workflows and Engagement Manager. The release frames it as planned work aimed first at audit teams.
The Essentials plans page, which lists $1,300 a year for one user and online checkout for up to 10 users, carries a creation date of 17 June 2026 in its page metadata.
Thomson Reuters said one million professionals in 107 countries and territories use CoCounsel across all its products, and that further next-generation capabilities in CoCounsel Tax are planned for later in 2026.
Thomson Reuters announced Ready to Review for automated 1040 preparation and added AICPA, FASB, GASB and IFRS content to the CoCounsel Tax, Audit and Accounting knowledge base.
Thomson Reuters launched CoCounsel Tax for in-house teams as a research platform and document workspace that draws on Checkpoint, regulatory documents and internal guidance.
Thomson Reuters launched its first agentic AI product, built with Materia's technology, connecting firm knowledge, Checkpoint, the IRS code and internal documents in one workspace.
CoCounsel Tax Essentials lists at $1,300 a year for one user on the Thomson Reuters plans page (published, checked 10 October 2026). Online pricing is offered to tax and accounting firms with up to 10 users; larger firms are sent to sales. Blue J's comparison page describes the same plan as $1,300 per user per year (reported by a competitor).
That price buys unlimited general AI conversations, document upload and analysis, templates, and up to 20 Checkpoint-backed answers and 10 workspaces per user each week. The Checkpoint Edge library is excluded.
The Tax Research add-on, which unlocks Checkpoint Edge access and unlimited citations, is priced per user, so only the users who need it carry it. Its price is not shown outside a configured checkout or a quote. In-house plans (CoCounsel Tax and CoCounsel Tax Plus) are sold by demo. For scale, Blue J lists $1,498 per user per year. Vendr reported a $13,784 median annual contract across 140 Thomson Reuters purchases of all products when read on 10 October 2026, which says little about this product alone.
Thomson Reuters' US General Terms (version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) apply unless the order form says otherwise. The agreement renews for successive one-year terms unless either side gives 30 days' written notice. Thomson Reuters may adjust charges from the start of a renewal term with 60 days' written notice, may charge interest of up to 1 percent a month on overdue invoices with a 25 dollar minimum per invoice, and caps liability at the charges payable in the prior 12 months.
Online add-on purchases run on their own clock: returns bought for Ready to Review and projects bought for Ready to Advise must be used within 12 months of purchase.
Getting work out is mostly manual. Workspaces export to Excel, conversations are shared by link inside the firm, and generated memos and spreadsheets download as files. Administrators can export usage reports as CSV or XLSX. The security help page says conversations, documents and workspaces are kept for the life of the account unless a user deletes them. At termination, the General Terms (US version 6.0) say Thomson Reuters will provide a copy of customer data in its standard format within 30 days, or let the customer extract it beforehand, if the customer asks in writing on or before the termination date. Ask what that copy contains for CoCounsel Tax, since the help pages describe no bulk export of history.
Days for most firms (Audit Friendly estimate). CoCounsel Tax runs in the browser and there is nothing to convert. Users sign in with a work email and a one-time code, and an administrator can let anyone on the firm's email domain join without an invitation.
A company administrator invites users, sets groups for document access, and connects SharePoint, OneDrive, Box, Suralink or UltraTax CS. The SharePoint setup also needs an administrator on the Microsoft side. Thomson Reuters offers eLearning videos, webinars run by its customer success team and instructor-led training.
The slower parts are commercial and cultural: a demo and quote for Tax Research, deciding which seats need it, loading firm guidance into Company Documents, and setting a review rule so staff check citations before an answer reaches a client.
Not today through any documented route. Thomson Reuters publishes no MCP server and no public API for CoCounsel Tax (checked 11 October 2026). Help pages that described a CoCounsel Tax MCP for Checkpoint research were online on 4 October 2026 and had been removed by 10 October 2026. The official MCP registry has no entry, and the only Thomson Reuters connector in Claude's directory is CoCounsel Legal.
An agent cannot run Checkpoint research, open workspaces, upload client files or manage users. The removed pages listed two tools, a cited Checkpoint research question and a feedback rating (Audit Friendly read, 4 October 2026), so even that route was narrow. What Claude can do is work on files a user exports: a memo as a PDF, a workspace as an Excel file or a generated schedule.
Licensing matters as much as plumbing. Thomson Reuters' US General Terms (version 6.0, last modified 1 September 2026) bar customers from uploading Thomson Reuters content to a third-party professional AI tool and from using APIs, MCPs or AI agents to extract it. Get written approval before routing Checkpoint answers into Claude or any outside agent.
