GruntWorx is a pay-per-use 1040 document automation service for small and mid-size US accounting firms: it sorts client tax documents into a bookmarked PDF, extracts the data, can have US-based staff verify it, and populates seven professional tax packages.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
CORE bundles and PREMIUM per-item rates are published on the vendor's own pages: $10 down to $5.50 a return, 50 cents a page, $1.25 a form, 30 cents a trade and $6 a brokerage summary (checked 11 October 2026). Promotions are posted with dates and codes. Three things are quote only: return-based PREMIUM, CORE at 500 returns or more and K-1 ADVANCED. The 100 percent expedite surcharge appears only in the user manual.
Sign-up is free and self-serve, and the trial gives a $30 PREMIUM credit and 2 CORE returns (Free Trial page, checked 10 October 2026). ORGANIZE and Trades need only a browser. POPULATE adds real setup: a Windows Agent per workstation that is re-downloaded each January, Excel macros, exact client ID matching, and for hosted desktops an install by the hosting provider (Lacerte user manual). No data conversion or partner is involved.
Phone, chat and email support run 9am to 6pm Eastern on weekdays and 8am to 8pm Eastern seven days a week in tax season (Job Status and Contact pages, checked 10 October 2026). The Learning Hub has a quick start guide, user manual and video series per tax package, plus free live webinars and user group sessions. CPA Practice Advisor rated Help, Support and Training 5 stars in 2020. No response-time commitment is published, and the FAQ points Drake Tax users to Drake Software Support for trial questions.
POPULATE writes into seven tax packages, more than the four SurePrep lists: CCH Axcess, CCH ProSystem fx, Drake Tax, Lacerte, ProSeries, GoSystem Tax RS and UltraTax CS (POPULATE page, checked 10 October 2026). It runs inside Drake Tax, and a Liscio integration announced on 18 November 2025 pushes client documents in. The mechanism is dated: a desktop Agent, proforma files and a macro-enabled Pointsheet workbook. The Liscio link does not work for firms that use GruntWorx through Drake Tax.
A firm account takes unlimited users and multiple locations (Lacerte user manual), and the vendor says thousands of firms use it without giving a count. Limits are modest: 15 PDFs of 150 MB per client, 13 for Lacerte, and 500 clients per CSV import (FAQ, checked 10 October 2026). PREMIUM depends on a human verification queue; the FAQ says peak-season jobs can take 24 to 48 hours. The Agent must be installed on every workstation, which is what strains first as headcount grows.
The Security and Compliance page (checked 10 October 2026) names an SSAE 18 SOC 2 Type 1 examination by Plante Moran and no Type 2 report; CPA Practice Advisor's August 2020 review had described a SOC 1 Type 2 examination, which the current page does not mention. GruntWorx says all staff and data stay in the United States, which supports its Section 7216 position. The Lacerte user manual documents a firm-wide two-factor setting and 90-day password expiry. The master agreement is shown only after registration, and files are deleted at calendar year end.
Coverage is 1040 source documents: POPULATE extracts 21 form types, including K-1s from Forms 1041, 1065 and 1120-S, and ORGANIZE classifies more than 30 (feature pages, checked 11 October 2026). POPULATE extraction is federal form data for the current tax year only, while ORGANIZE and Trades also accept prior years (FAQ). Handwriting is not read, and Trades excludes Coinbase statements, 8949 worksheets and monthly statements. GruntWorx does not prepare, diagnose or e-file a return; K-1 ADVANCED adds K-3 and state K-1 detail as a separate product.
The in-product automation is OCR and pattern recognition with optional human review; the Lacerte manual says CORE jobs run on 'OCR and Business Intelligence technology only', and the CORE page lists AI-enhanced OCR as a planned enhancement. K-1 ADVANCED runs on AI technology from K1x. For outside agents there is no MCP server in the public registry and no developer documentation (checked 11 October 2026). An API key exists in the Connect tab, but its only documented use is Liscio's document push.

GruntWorx is the low-commitment way to stop keying W-2s, 1099s, K-1s and brokerage trades into a 1040. Staff upload scanned PDFs. The service returns a bookmarked workpaper and a data file that populates CCH Axcess, CCH ProSystem fx, Drake Tax, Lacerte, ProSeries, GoSystem Tax RS or UltraTax CS. CORE costs $5.50 to $10 a return and the firm checks the extraction itself. PREMIUM is priced by the page, form and trade, and US-based GruntWorx staff check the data first. There is no subscription and no contract term (published; checked 10 October 2026).
The catch is the plumbing. The engine is OCR plus people, and population runs through a Windows Agent on each workstation and a macro-enabled Excel workbook. POPULATE handles federal 1040 inputs for the current tax year only; ORGANIZE and Trades also take prior years. State returns, business returns and e-filing stay in the tax software. The security page names a SOC 2 Type 1 examination, which tests control design at a point in time, and no Type 2 report. Completed files are deleted from GruntWorx servers at the end of the calendar year, so retention is the firm's job. No public API documentation or MCP server exists.
Before buying, ask for the SOC 2 report, its date and whether a Type 2 period is under way. Get the master agreement before registering, because it is only shown at first login, and read the liability, refund and data-deletion terms. For return-based PREMIUM or K-1 ADVANCED, get the per-return rate, the page or K-1 assumptions behind it, the expiry of unused returns and the expedite surcharge in the quote. Confirm that the Agent supports the firm's tax software version, hosting provider and Excel build for the coming season.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Support staff scan documents in any order at 300 dpi and upload up to 15 PDFs per client. ORGANIZE classifies each page, labels it with the issuer name and returns one searchable, bookmarked PDF. On CORE the same output is part of the flat per-return price, with the firm checking the classification.
POPULATE reads supported federal forms, builds a Pointsheet workbook with one tab per form and flags diagnostics. A preparer reviews it and clicks Populate, and the Agent writes the values into the client file in the tax software. It works for the current tax year only and costs $1.25 a form plus the page charge on PREMIUM.
Trade DETAILS turns a consolidated 1099 into an Excel file of quantity, description, dates, proceeds, basis and covered status, and flags trades missing cost basis. Trade SUMMARY gives category totals for $6.00 a brokerage when Schedule D totals are enough. Coinbase statements, 8949 worksheets and monthly statements are not supported.
On PREMIUM, US-based GruntWorx validators check the extracted data against the source pages before the firm sees it. The vendor says turnaround is typically within 24 hours, and its FAQ allows 24 to 48 hours at peak. Expedited Service jumps the queue for double the job cost.
CORE skips GruntWorx staff review. The technology processes a job in 1 to 15 minutes, per the CORE user manual, and the firm validates each field in a browser tool with an OCR AutoFill aid. The price is fixed per return whatever the page count, which lets a firm pass a set technology charge to clients.
K-1 ADVANCED, announced in January 2026 and powered by K1x, digitizes K-1 packages beyond the face page, including footnotes, state allocations and K-3 data, and exports to Excel, CSV or API. The vendor claims it removes up to 90 percent of manual entry. It is a standalone product sold by quote.

The Security and Compliance page (checked 10 October 2026) cites an SSAE 18 SOC 2 Type 1 examination performed by Plante Moran. It gives no report date and names no Type 2 report, which is the one that tests controls over a period. CPA Practice Advisor's August 2020 review said GruntWorx had completed a SOC 1 Type 2 examination; the current page does not mention it. Ask for the latest report and its date before client data leaves the firm.
The FAQ (checked 10 October 2026) says files stay on GruntWorx servers until the end of the calendar year following the tax preparation period: a file uploaded on 15 February is available through 31 December of the same year and is then deleted. The Lacerte user manual adds that a resubmission discards the earlier completed files unless they were saved locally. Download and store the bookmarked PDF and Pointsheet in the firm's own document system.
The FAQ says POPULATE supports the current tax year only, while ORGANIZE and Trades handle prior years. The manuals describe the extraction as federal form data. Population needs the GruntWorx Agent on every Windows workstation, a fresh Agent download each January and Excel macros enabled; hosted desktops need the hosting provider to install it (Lacerte user manual, checked 10 October 2026). The FAQ's system requirements also say Microsoft 365 Apps are not supported, so confirm the Excel build.
On Variable Pricing, POPULATE is charged per page processed and per form populated, and Trade DETAILS at 30 cents a trade reaches $300 on a 1,000-trade statement (Audit Friendly arithmetic from published rates). CPA Practice Advisor reported 20 cents a page, 75 cents a form and 15 cents a trade in August 2020, against 50 cents, $1.25 and 30 cents on 10 October 2026. Expedited Service doubles the job cost. Firms with document-heavy clients should ask for the return-based quote.
The Lacerte user manual says CORE is not reviewed by GruntWorx for accuracy and is processed with OCR and Business Intelligence technology only. The CORE manual warns that its AutoFill, Data Finder and Mirror aids will not always be accurate. Handwriting is not read, and pages skewed more than 10 degrees are not extracted (FAQ). CORE returns expire 18 months after purchase, and a sixth submission for one client debits another return.
Liscio's help center (article dated 31 July 2025, checked 10 October 2026) says the Liscio integration is not available when GruntWorx is used through Drake Tax. Drake users register, buy and submit through Drake's own site and software, and the FAQ sends their trial questions to Drake Software Support or GruntWorx sales. GoSystem Tax RS is listed for POPULATE, yet the Learning Hub has no GoSystem page, so ask for the setup guide before relying on it.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. The public MCP registry returns no GruntWorx server, and a GitHub search finds no first-party MCP project (checked 10 October 2026). GruntWorx publishes no developer portal and no API reference. An API does sit behind the product: Liscio's help center tells firm administrators to copy an API key from the Connect tab in GruntWorx settings, and that key is how Liscio pushes client documents in.
Scope: The only documented use of that key runs one way, documents from Liscio into a GruntWorx client record. Nothing public describes submitting jobs, reading job status, or pulling the bookmarked PDF and Pointsheet from code. K-1 ADVANCED lists API among its export formats, but that capability comes from K1x and its terms are not published on the GruntWorx site. The one GitHub project that automates GruntWorx is a single firm's own script, which is community work with no vendor support.
Turnkey: No. There is nothing for an agent to connect to without vendor involvement. Moving data into the tax software still runs through a Windows desktop Agent and a macro-enabled Excel workbook that a person opens, reviews and clicks.
In the product, the automation is OCR and pattern recognition, with US-based staff checking PREMIUM jobs. The site now calls this AI-enhanced document processing, and the CORE page lists AI-enhanced OCR under planned future enhancements, so treat that as roadmap. K-1 ADVANCED runs on patented AI from K1x; the claim that it removes up to 90 percent of manual entry is the vendor's and has no independent test.
GruntWorx promoted its Vice President of Sales and Marketing to President. The announcement names Phil Drake as owner of GruntWorx and cites the CEO of Drake Enterprise Limited.
CPA Practice Advisor reported GruntWorx as the Specialty Systems winner, picked by 32.8 percent of voters in a category that allowed more than one choice; GruntWorx Populate drew 17.3 percent in Tax Document Automation, behind TaxDome at 43.8 percent.
GruntWorx posted a Drake Tax tutorial for GruntWorx CORE on 2 April 2026; its CORE page says the tier was previously GruntWorxLITE, and the rename itself is undated. The CORE page prices it at $10 a return, down to $5.50 in a 250-return bundle.
CPA Practice Advisor reported a GruntWorx and K1x partnership that adds GruntWorx K-1 ADVANCED, a branded product for extracting K-1 data beyond the face page, including state and international detail and footnotes.
CPA Practice Advisor reported the integration as available immediately to mutual customers: documents that clients upload in Liscio can be sent straight into GruntWorx. Liscio's help center articles on it are dated 31 July 2025 and say it does not apply to Drake Tax users.
The published prices (checked 10 October 2026) make this easy to model. On CORE, where the firm checks the data, a single return is $10 and bundles run from $7.00 a return for 25 down to $5.50 a return for 250. A firm with 300 individual returns could buy the 250 and 50 bundles for $1,700, which is about $5.67 a return.
On PREMIUM, where GruntWorx staff verify the data, the price follows the paper: 50 cents a page, $1.25 a populated form, 30 cents a trade or $6.00 a brokerage summary. Audit Friendly estimates about $41 for a 40-page return with 12 forms and one brokerage summary, or roughly $12,300 for 300 such returns. Actual page counts vary, so run a few real clients through the free trial first.
Return-based PREMIUM, CORE at 500 returns or more and K-1 ADVANCED are quote only. Expedited Service adds 100 percent to a job.
There is no subscription and no long-term contract on Variable Pricing. Firms add funds and draw them down, and the vendor says the balance never expires while the account is active. CORE returns are different: they expire 18 months after purchase. The master agreement and license are accepted at first login and are not posted on the public site, so ask for a copy before registering.
Getting data out is simple because the outputs are ordinary files. Each job returns a bookmarked PDF and, for POPULATE or Trades, an Excel Pointsheet that staff download one client at a time or in batches. Job costs export to CSV. Do it promptly: the FAQ says files are deleted from GruntWorx servers at the end of the calendar year.
The firm does it alone, usually in days. Registration is free and a first ORGANIZE or CORE job can go in the same day from a browser. The vendor publishes a one-page quick start guide, a user manual and a short video series for each tax package, plus free live webinars.
POPULATE is the part that needs IT. The GruntWorx Agent has to be installed on every Windows workstation, re-downloaded each January and sometimes let through antivirus, and Excel macros must be trusted. Hosted desktops need the hosting provider to install it. Client IDs in GruntWorx must match the tax software exactly. Drake Tax firms register through Drake and work from inside the tax software.
No. GruntWorx has no MCP server and publishes no API documentation (checked 10 October 2026). An API key exists in the Connect tab of the settings screen, but its only documented use is to let Liscio push client documents into GruntWorx.
An agent can still help around the edges. Claude can read the bookmarked PDF and the Pointsheet workbook after a person downloads them, compare extracted values with source pages and draft review notes. It cannot submit jobs, watch job status or populate the return, because that last step runs through a desktop Agent and an Excel macro.
