Intuit ProSeries Tax is forms-based Windows desktop tax preparation software for sole practitioners and small firms that file mostly individual and small business returns, sold as an annual license with published per-return fees or return bundles.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Intuit's Data Conversion Wizard converts 1040 data from nine named packages and business modules from six, usually the same business day (data conversion page and FAQ, checked 10 October 2026). Easy Start is a seven-step plan from account setup and EFIN verification to install, conversion, training and integrations. Surveyed users rated ease of use 4.4, and 24.9 percent named the learning curve a top like, the highest of the seven products. A new firm still waits on the IRS for an EFIN, which Intuit says can take 20 to 45 or more days.
Intuit publishes the pay-per-return license ($539) and rates, three Basic bundles, 1040 Essentials and two Essentials bundles (pricing and checkout pages, checked 10 October 2026). Advanced, the network license and hosting for five or more users are quote only. The pages carry two per-return rate cards and conflicting add-on prices, the Professional bundle prices shown were new-customer promotions ending 15 October 2026, and the renewal cap in the three-year offer sits in a private contract.
Support is included: phone, in-product help and web chat, 6 AM to 5 PM PT on weekdays with longer hours near deadlines, plus a 24/7 digital assistant (contact article, checked 10 October 2026). In the 2026 AICPA survey only 52.8 percent of ProSeries users needed technical support, the lowest of seven products, and they rated it 3.7 for access and 3.8 for quality against 4.3 and 4.2 for Drake Tax. Support was a top dislike for 24.6 percent of its users.
ProSeries lists 1,000+ diagnostics with click-to-fix navigation, return locking that flags later calculation changes, and automatic e-file acknowledgment tracking (features page, checked 10 October 2026). Access Rights offers four predefined roles plus custom roles, every launch requires an Intuit sign-in under IRS Security Summit standards, and Intuit Sign keeps a timestamped audit trail with KBA for Forms 8878 and 8879. No ProSeries-specific SOC 1 or SOC 2 report appears on Intuit's public pages; data sits on the firm's PC unless it buys Rightworks hosting, which Intuit calls SOC-compliant.
Professional covers Forms 1040, 1040-NR, 1041, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 990, 706 and 709 with all states, and e-file for the current year and two prior years; Basic is limited to 1040 work and omits 1040-NR, net operating loss, at-risk and foreign source income forms (FAQ, checked 10 October 2026). In the 2026 AICPA survey 31.8 percent of ProSeries users said it did not contain all the forms they needed, the highest share of the seven products, while 92.1 percent of UltraTax CS users said theirs did. Coverage is US federal and state only.
Basic is single-user and includes one to four states, with other states billed per return; Professional needs a separately priced network license and extra Fast Path seats for concurrent users (FAQ and Fast Path help article, checked 10 October 2026). Intuit's system requirements say terminal servers and network-attached storage are unsupported. In the 2026 AICPA survey ProSeries held 20.5 percent of sole practitioners and 5.9 percent of firms with more than 500 preparers, and an Intuit Short from January 2026 features a CPA who moved from ProSeries to hosted Lacerte as her firm grew.
Native links are Intuit-centric: trial balance import from QuickBooks Desktop Accountant, TXF files, Financial Institution Download from 275+ institutions, K-1 transfer between returns, Intuit Link, SmartVault and the Document Management System (integrations and checkout pages, checked 10 October 2026). GruntWorx announced a ProSeries import on 22 October 2025. Intuit says Accountant Suite integration is unavailable for ProSeries, there is no API, and surveyed users rated integration 3.2 and data import 3.3 of 5.
No ProSeries MCP server, public API or SDK was listed in the official MCP registry or on GitHub on 10 October 2026. In an Intuit community thread from August 2023, the only reply to a request for a ProSeries API or SDK came from another user, who had seen nothing beyond the Lacerte interface, the ProSeries trial balance import and the SmartVault and DMS links. In-product automation is Tax Scan and Import, an OCR add-on for 1040 returns in Professional, plus Financial Institution Download from 275+ institutions. Intuit Tax Advisor works inside ProConnect or Lacerte, and Intuit says Accountant Suite integration is unavailable for ProSeries.

You are buying the easy-to-learn package in Intuit's professional line: forms-based entry on a Windows PC. In the 2026 Journal of Accountancy survey of 1,808 AICPA members, 79.2 percent of ProSeries users named ease of use a top like, the highest of the seven major products, and only 52.8 percent needed technical support during the season, the lowest (reported, published 1 September 2026). Most prices are on the website: pay-per-return starts with a $539 annual license, Basic bundles run $729 to $2,049, and e-file is included. From tax year 2026, Intuit Sign signatures and KBA are included too.
The catch is depth. ProSeries lists 1,000+ diagnostics against 25,000+ for Lacerte, and 31.8 percent of its surveyed users said it did not contain all the forms they needed, the highest share in the survey. Basic is single-user with one to four states. Multi-user work needs a network license that Intuit prices by phone, and remote work needs Rightworks hosting at $80 to $156 per user per month. There is no API, SDK or MCP server, and Intuit Tax Advisor and Intuit Accountant Suite connect to other Intuit tax products.
Before signing, get the list price beside any promotional price. The Professional bundle prices on Intuit's pricing page on 10 October 2026 were new-customer offers ending 15 October 2026; 1040 Essentials showed $2,605 against a $4,007 list price. Ask for the renewal cap percentage in the three-year contract, which auto-renews, the network license and Fast Path seat price per user, and which per-return rate card applies once a bundle runs out. Check your own form list against Basic and Professional. The refund window for new customers is five business days.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
ProSeries Basic Unlimited covers unlimited federal 1040s for one preparer with four states, e-file and Intuit Sign included. Smaller practices can buy 20 returns for $729 or 50 for $1,099. Extra states bill at $61 per return, so preparers with clients in many states should price Professional.
A $539 annual license opens ProSeries Professional, and each 1120, 1120-S, 1065, 1041 or 990 bills at filing. Intuit's Basic checkout points firms with several users or 15 or more business returns to ProSeries Professional plans. Basic customers can use the same route because every Basic license includes access to Professional.
K-1 data import moves figures from 1065, 1120-S and 1041 returns into the partner's or beneficiary's 1040 without retyping, and Consolidated K-1 Print produces every partner's federal and state K-1 in one run. Intuit claims customers using K-1 packages save 19 minutes on average; no independent account confirms it. Both features are Professional only.
Intuit Sign replaces the paid eSignature add-on starting with the tax year 2026 program. Signature requests, reminders, KBA for Forms 8878 and 8879 and an audit trail are included with an active license. Tax year 2025 and earlier returns still use purchased eSignature bundles until the new program is released.
The client signs in to a broker, bank or payroll provider and ProSeries downloads 1099-B, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV and W-2 data into the return; Intuit lists these downloads among the services included with the license. Scanned paper goes through Tax Scan and Import, which is Professional only and billed per use. Surveyed users still rated data import 3.3 of 5.
Rightworks hosting runs the same desktop program in a virtual desktop with nightly backups kept for 90 days. Professional firms pay $128 to $156 per user per month depending on tier, and two or more users still need a network license. Intuit advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee on hosting.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Annual ProSeries Professional license for one user with e-file and Intuit Sign; returns are billed separately when filed.
State individual returns are $64, state business returns $65, Form 706 $82 and Form 709 $74. Business covers 1120, 1120-S, 1065, 1041 and 990.
20 federal 1040s and 20 state returns in one state for a single user. Extra returns bill at $69 federal and $61 state.
50 federal 1040s and 50 state returns across two states for a single user.
Unlimited 1040s for a single user with four states; other states are pay-per-return.
Unlimited 1040 and state returns in all states, unlimited 1099 and W-2 filing, one user included; business returns are pay-per-return. Price shown was a new-customer offer ending 15 October 2026.
200 individual and business returns in any mix with unlimited state returns and unlimited 1099 and W-2 filing. New-customer offer ending 15 October 2026.
400 individual and business returns in any mix with unlimited state returns. The page showed no list price for this size.
Unlimited individual and business returns, all states, a multi-user network license and asset and depreciation management.
Billed at filing once a plan's returns or states run out: $61 per state return, $80 per Form 706 and $71 per Form 709.
Rightworks-hosted ProSeries for one user; the only hosting tier Intuit offers for Basic.
Bundle checkouts list $128 and $153 for one to three users; the pay-per-return checkout and hosting page list $131 and $156. Two or more users also need a network license.
The Journal of Accountancy and The Tax Adviser surveyed 1,808 AICPA members in June 2026 and published the results on 1 September 2026. ProSeries users were the most likely of the seven major products' users to say their software did not contain all needed forms, at 31.8 percent. Number of forms was a top dislike for 20.0 percent of them. Lacerte, Intuit's package for complex returns, lists 7,200+ forms. List your unusual forms and check each one before buying.
Intuit's FAQ (checked 10 October 2026) says ProSeries Basic is single-user only and includes one, two or four states depending on the bundle; other states bill at $61 per return. Form 1040-NR and the net operating loss, at-risk limitation and foreign source income forms are Professional only. Business, fiduciary, estate and gift returns must be prepared in Professional and paid per return. Tax Scan and Import, K-1 data import and Client Analyzer are Professional features as well.
On 10 October 2026 the pricing page listed pay-per-return rates of $72 per 1040, $64 per state individual return, $100 per federal business return and $65 per state business return. The bundle checkout pages listed overage rates of $69, $61, $99 and $61 for the same items. Add-ons disagreed as well: Client Organizer showed $22 on one page and $16 on another, and Tax Scan and Import showed $16 and $17. The 1040 Essentials and Essentials prices were promotions for new customers ending 15 October 2026, shown against list prices of $4,007 and $5,602. Ask sales which card your invoice will follow.
ProSeries installs on Windows, and Intuit's tax year 2026 system requirements list Windows 11 for workstations (help article, checked 10 October 2026). Concurrent users need a network license bought as an add-on plus extra Fast Path seats, and Intuit quotes that price by phone. Terminal server environments and network-attached storage are unsupported. Mac and remote users need Rightworks hosting at $80 a month for a solo Basic user or $128 to $156 per user per month on Professional, and hosted accounts with two or more users still need the network license.
New customers can request a refund only within five business days of the software release date or the payment date, whichever is later (pricing page, checked 10 October 2026). The three-year pricing offer requires an auto-renewing contract, and the cap on renewal increases is a percentage written in that contract. Bundled returns expire with the tax-year program. If a firm stops renewing, Intuit's Fast Path article says e-filing, pay-per-return authorization, live support and updates stop. Since 11 November 2025 Intuit reviews pay-per-return refund requests only for returns processed within the last three tax years.
Intuit's tax software overview (checked 10 October 2026) says Accountant Suite integration is available for ProConnect Tax and unavailable for Lacerte and ProSeries. Intuit Tax Advisor generates plans inside ProConnect or Lacerte; ProSeries users rely on its built-in Tax Planner and Client Advisor. In an Intuit community thread from August 2023, the only reply to a request for a ProSeries API or SDK came from another user who knew of none, and none was listed on 10 October 2026. Surveyed users rated ProSeries 3.2 of 5 for integration with accounting and other software.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. No first-party ProSeries MCP server was listed in the official MCP registry or on GitHub when checked on 10 October 2026. Intuit's one public MCP repository on GitHub covers QuickBooks Online and does not reach ProSeries returns. Registry searches for ProSeries, ProConnect and Lacerte returned no tax preparation server.
Scope: There is no public API or SDK to scope. An Intuit community thread from August 2023 asked for one, and the reply listed only the Lacerte interface, the trial balance import for ProSeries and the SmartVault and DMS links. Data moves in through Intuit's own importers (QuickBooks Desktop Accountant, TXF files, Financial Institution Download, Tax Scan and Import) and, since an October 2025 announcement, GruntWorx.
Turnkey: Not applicable today. Any automation has to drive the Windows interface on a machine where a licensed user has signed in, and Intuit requires a sign-in at every launch. Hosted firms run the same desktop program inside a Rightworks virtual desktop, which adds no API.
In-product AI: ProSeries has no generative assistant on Intuit's pages. Tax Scan and Import reads scanned source documents with dual OCR and imports them into 1040 returns; it is Professional only, billed per use, and Intuit's help article says a job takes 15 to 30 minutes and sometimes up to 12 hours. Intuit Tax Advisor generates plans inside ProConnect or Lacerte, and Intuit says Accountant Suite integration is unavailable for ProSeries.
ProSeries was used by 11 percent of 1,808 AICPA respondents, fifth of seven major packages, with a 4.2 overall rating and 4.4 for ease of use. 31.8 percent of its users said it did not contain all the forms they needed.
Intuit reported an issue affecting sign-in to its products, including ProSeries Tax, and marked it resolved the same day. ProSeries requires a sign-in at every launch, so an Intuit identity outage stops desktop work.
GruntWorx said ProSeries users can import organized, verified tax document data from GruntWorx into returns, available immediately. The details come from GruntWorx's announcement as carried by CPA Practice Advisor.
Intuit said that from 11 November 2025 it reviews pay-per-return refund requests only for returns processed in the current tax year and the two prior tax years.
Ahead of Microsoft ending Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025, Intuit published upgrade answers for ProSeries users, including Microsoft's paid one-year Extended Security Updates option. The tax year 2026 system requirements list Windows 11 for workstations.
A solo preparer filing mostly individual returns can buy ProSeries Basic: 20 returns for $729, 50 for $1,099 or unlimited for $2,049 a year, with one, two or four states included (published, checked 10 October 2026). Extra states bill at $61 per return, and e-file is included.
Firms with business returns or more than one preparer need ProSeries Professional. 1040 Essentials (unlimited 1040s in all states, business returns billed per return) showed $2,605 against a $4,007 list price, and Essentials with 200 mixed returns showed $3,641 against $5,602. Both were new-customer offers ending 15 October 2026. A firm filing 150 individual and 30 business returns fits the 200-return bundle; the same work on 1040 Essentials would add about $4,800 in business return fees at $99 federal and $61 state each (Audit Friendly estimate).
Pay-per-return costs $539 a year for the license, then $72 per federal 1040, $64 per state individual return, $100 per federal business return and $65 per state business return. Add $80 a month for Solo hosting on Basic or $128 to $156 per user per month on Professional, plus a network license quoted by Intuit sales if two or more preparers share data.
Licenses are sold per tax year, and Intuit typically delivers the program in November. Bundled returns apply to that tax-year program and do not carry over. New customers can request a refund only within five business days of the release date or payment date, whichever is later. The three-year price offer requires an auto-renewing contract, and the renewal cap percentage is set in that contract.
Client files sit on the firm's own Windows drive or in its Rightworks hosted desktop, so the firm holds the data. If the license lapses, Intuit says the program keeps running and returns in already authorized unlimited modules can still be prepared and filed on paper, while e-file, pay-per-return authorization, live support and updates stop until the firm renews. Drake Software lists a ProSeries converter for 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120 and 1120S data (checked 10 October 2026). Hosted firms get 15 days to retrieve data after a failed payment ends the subscription.
Most firms do it themselves in one to three weeks (Audit Friendly estimate). Intuit's Easy Start plan has seven steps: watch the welcome video, create the account, get and verify the EFIN, install ProSeries, convert data, take training and explore integrations. The Data Conversion Wizard handles 1040 files from nine named packages and business files from six, usually the same business day.
The slow part for a new practice is the IRS: Intuit's FAQ says an EFIN application can take 20 to 45 or more days. Plan a Windows 11 PC for tax year 2026, IT help if several preparers share data over a network, and a Rightworks setup step if the firm buys hosting.
No. ProSeries has no public API, SDK or MCP server; none was listed in the official MCP registry or on GitHub on 10 October 2026. It is a Windows desktop program that requires a signed-in user at every launch.
Claude can still help around it: reading exported PDF returns and spreadsheets, drafting client letters and document requests, and comparing a draft return with source documents before a preparer files. Document automation inside the product comes from Tax Scan and Import or the GruntWorx integration announced on 22 October 2025.
