ATX is Wolters Kluwer's forms-based Windows desktop tax preparation software for sole practitioners and small accounting firms, sold in five published annual packages from $939 to $6,859 that cover individual and business returns, e-file and bundled tax research.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
All five packages and three add-ons carry a price on the Wolters Kluwer eShop (checked 11 October 2026), and extra user licenses, extra offices and per-return fees were priced in its package details as read on 10 October 2026. That fee schedule shows only after a package is selected, and it added a processing fee of $56.75 to $119.50. Client Portal pricing is by quote, and list prices rose about 8 percent from the 2025 to the 2026 packages (Audit Friendly estimate from archived and current vendor prices).
ATX is a download-and-install Windows program with automatic updates, a Quick Start Guide and an on-demand Learning Portal. Users rated installing and updating 4.5 and ease of use 4.4, and 90.4 percent would recommend it to a new practice (JofA 2026). Conversion utilities sit in the customer Solution Center, but assisted Conversion Services are bundled only with Advantage, and the 2024 tax year refund policy made those fees non-refundable.
The vendor lists more than 6,000 forms covering 1040, 1120, 1120S, 1065, 1041, 706, 709, 990 and 5500 plus state, local, sales and use and payroll forms (product page as archived on 29 September 2026; CPA Practice Advisor reported the same count in June 2020). In the JofA survey 62.7 percent of ATX users named the number of forms a top like and 15.0 percent a top dislike, and multistate business returns scored 4.2 against a 4.1 average. ATX 1040 covers only three states, and prior-year e-file reaches back two years, per the eShop's package details and a vendor support article read on 10 October 2026.
Phone, chat and web cases are included. The 2026 schedule was 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern on weekdays in season with Saturday hours, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. off season, per a vendor support article read on 10 October 2026 and updated 31 August 2026. In the 2026 JofA survey ATX users rated support quality 3.9 against a 3.8 average and ease of reaching it 3.6 against 3.7, and 32.5 percent named support a top dislike. Concierge Care, a fast-track queue, comes only with the $6,859 Advantage package.
ATX makes every user set a password and pair an authenticator app; the 2024 Quick Start Guide adds lockout after five failed logins and a fresh login every 12 hours or after 30 minutes idle. The same guide says ATX conforms to IRS Publication 4557, and the vendor's support site as archived in December 2025 said Wolters Kluwer is an IRS Security Summit member. Check Return diagnostics flag e-file errors, omissions and overridden entries. No SOC 1 or SOC 2 report, accuracy guarantee or return-level change log appears in the ATX eShop pages, Quick Start Guide or system requirements (checked 11 October 2026), and client data sits on the firm's own machine.
In the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026, the user selector started at 1 user on PRS, 2 on ATX 1040, 3 on MAX, 5 on Total Tax Office and 6 on Advantage, with 20 extra user licenses for $1,269 and extra offices from $879. A server install and a Central Office Manager for multiple offices exist. The 2024 Quick Start Guide shows ATX installing under Program Files (x86), where Windows puts 32-bit programs, and 56.6 percent of its surveyed users are sole practitioners (JofA 2026), so evidence of use in larger firms is thin.
ATX scored 2.9 for integration and 3.0 for importing data, the lowest of seven products, and 36.3 percent of users named integration a top dislike (JofA 2026). Links exist to Wolters Kluwer's own CCH iFirm portal, CCH AnswerConnect, Payroll Compliance Reporting and Client Accounting Suite. A vendor support article read on 10 October 2026 and last modified 11 July 2026 said the QuickBooks Online import was unavailable pending Intuit's approval, and there is no API for anything else.
No ATX server appears in the official MCP registry, Wolters Kluwer's developer portal covers CCH Axcess APIs only, and the ATX eShop page names no AI feature (checked 11 October 2026). Expert AI document extraction launched in sister product TaxWise Online in November 2025 (reported). The bundled CCH AnswerConnect research is the closest thing to AI in the package, and it runs in Wolters Kluwer's own screens.
Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.
ATX is a forms-based Windows program. The preparer types onto screens that mirror the IRS forms, runs Check Return diagnostics and e-files from the same window. Wolters Kluwer lists more than 6,000 federal, state and local forms, including 1040, 1120, 1120S, 1065, 1041, 706, 709, 990 and 5500 (vendor product page as archived on 29 September 2026; CPA Practice Advisor reported the same count in June 2020). Five packages run from $939 to $6,859 a year (published, checked 10 October 2026), each with a CCH AnswerConnect research tier and a Payroll Compliance Reporting license. Users like it: ATX scored 4.3 of 5 overall and 4.4 for ease of use in the 2026 Journal of Accountancy survey, and 90.4 percent would recommend it to a new practice (reported).
The catch is everything around the return. ATX scored 2.9 for integration and 3.0 for importing data in the same survey, the lowest of seven products, and no ATX user named integration a top like (reported). There is no public API, no MCP server and no published AI feature for ATX. Wolters Kluwer put its Expert AI into TaxWise Online in November 2025 and into CCH Axcess. ATX runs only on Windows, on the firm's own PC or server, and the parent's August 2026 half-year report says firms keep moving from on-premise software to its cloud platforms. Package prices rose about 8 percent between the 2025 and 2026 seasons (Audit Friendly estimate from the vendor's archived and current list prices).
Before signing, get the full cart total in writing: the package price, the processing fee the eShop adds ($94.00 on ATX 1040 and $119.50 on ATX MAX in the package details read on 10 October 2026), extra user licenses, and per-item fees such as $5.00 per e-signature and $6.00 per prior-year e-file. Ask whether the QuickBooks Online import is working, because a vendor support article read on 10 October 2026 and last modified 11 July 2026 said the connection was unavailable pending Intuit's approval. Confirm which research tier comes with Total Tax Office and Advantage, since the eShop text and the comparison chart on the vendor's archived product page named different ones. Ask for the current refund policy too. The 2024 tax year policy ended the refund right once a return was created or e-filed.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
ATX MAX is $2,829 on the eShop (published, checked 11 October 2026). Per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026, it covers unlimited federal and state individual and business returns with unlimited current-year e-file, the user selector starts at 3 users, and the cart adds a $119.50 processing fee. Prior-year e-files cost $6.00 each and e-signatures $5.00 each. Confirm these in the cart.
PRS costs $939 (published, checked 11 October 2026). The vendor's product page as archived on 29 September 2026 said that covers 6 individual returns, and the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026 priced further individual returns at $52.00, business returns at $90.00 and payroll returns at $20.00. At about 12 individual returns PRS costs the same as ATX 1040, and at about 42 it matches ATX MAX. Both break-even points are Audit Friendly estimates that ignore state limits, e-file caps and the processing fee.
ATX 1040 is $1,249 on the eShop (published, checked 11 October 2026). Per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026, it covers unlimited federal individual returns and 3 states; after 75 e-files each one costs $7.00, and each business return costs $90.00. At about 300 e-filed returns the package plus e-file fees reaches the ATX MAX price (Audit Friendly estimate), and sooner if the firm also files business returns or needs more states.
Every ATX purchase includes a Payroll Compliance Reporting license, installed as a separate program (2024 Quick Start Guide). The eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026 priced payroll compliance forms at $0 to $20 per return type depending on the package, with e-filing at $3.00 per TIN. That suits a tax office filing information returns for a handful of clients. A firm with thousands of payees should compare dedicated 1099 platforms.
All ATX packages include research from CCH AnswerConnect and the U.S. Master Tax Guide, opened from an open return once the preparer's research login is saved in Preferences (2024 Quick Start Guide). ATX 1040 gets Master Tax Guide Online and MAX gets Master Tax Guide Plus, per the comparison chart on the vendor's product page as archived on 29 September 2026. In the JofA survey 9.6 percent of ATX users named bundled research a top like and 22.5 percent a top dislike (reported), so depth is a matter of which tier the package carries.
Extra users are sold in blocks: $185.00 for one, $550.00 for five, $809.00 for ten and $1,269.00 for twenty, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. A second office cost $879.00 on ATX 1040 and up to $4,819.00 on Advantage in the same details. These prices show only after a package is selected, so confirm them in the cart. The vendor's Central Office Manager handles added offices and EFINs, and bank product enrollment for multiple offices runs through it.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Pay-per-return license starting at one user. Per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026, individual returns are $52.00, business returns $90.00 and payroll returns $20.00 each; the vendor's product page as archived on 29 September 2026 said 6 individual returns are included. Confirm in the cart.
Unlimited federal individual returns with 3 states and 75 free e-files, then $7.00 per e-file, and business returns at $90.00 each, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. The user selector started at 2. Confirm in the cart.
Unlimited federal and state individual and business returns with unlimited e-file and CCH AnswerConnect Master Tax Guide Plus, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. The user selector started at 3, and the vendor's archived product page labeled the package most popular.
The same unlimited returns and e-file as MAX with the user selector starting at 5, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. The comparison chart on the vendor's product page as archived on 29 September 2026 listed CCH AnswerConnect Federal Scholar research; the eShop text listed Master Tax Guide Plus.
Unlimited returns and e-file with the user selector starting at 6, plus Concierge Care support and Conversion Services, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. The eShop's add-on pages say Advanced Calculations and Compliance and Enhanced Asset Management are included in Advantage (11 October 2026).
One extra user $185.00, five $550.00, ten $809.00 or twenty $1,269.00, all at a single location, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. These prices show only after a package is selected, so confirm them in the cart.
$879.00 on ATX 1040, $2,019.00 on MAX, $2,949.00 on Total Tax Office and $4,819.00 on Advantage, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. Confirm in the cart.
Shown in the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026: $56.75 on PRS, $94.00 on ATX 1040 and Total Tax Office and $119.50 on MAX, described as including applicable electronic filing and processing fees. Confirm the amount in the cart.
E-signature $5.00, prior-year e-file $6.00, payroll e-file $3.00 per TIN on MAX and Total Tax Office, and individual e-file $7.00 after the first 75 on ATX 1040, per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026. Confirm in the cart.
Add-on for education credit optimization, taxable 1099-Q amounts and the credit for taxes paid to other states. Included in Advantage.
Add-on for extra asset reports, asset grouping and splitting assets by units, cost or percentage. Included in Advantage.
Hosted backup that lets the firm download its current-year and two prior-year returns after a loss.
In the Journal of Accountancy and The Tax Adviser survey published 1 September 2026, ATX users rated integration with accounting and other software 2.9 of 5 and ease of importing data 3.0, the lowest scores among seven products. No ATX user named integration a top like, 36.3 percent named it a top dislike and 31.3 percent named importing data a top dislike. ATX made up 4.6 percent of 1,808 respondents, about 83 people (Audit Friendly estimate), so treat single percentages with care. A firm that relies on trial balance imports or scan-and-populate tools should test those steps in the free trial.
The 2024 Quick Start Guide describes a QuickBooks Online Import feature, and a 2020 CPA Practice Advisor review listed it as a strength. A Wolters Kluwer support article titled Unable to connect ATX QuickBooks Import, read on 10 October 2026 and last modified 11 July 2026, said Intuit changed its API approval process and that users cannot reach the QuickBooks Online integration until Intuit re-enables the connection. The article gave no date for a fix, and the outage may since have ended. Ask support for the current status in writing before counting on the import.
The eShop adds a processing fee once a package is selected: $56.75 on PRS, $94.00 on ATX 1040 and Total Tax Office and $119.50 on MAX, per its package details as read on 10 October 2026. In the same details each e-signature cost $5.00 and each prior-year e-file $6.00 on every package, and ATX 1040 buyers also paid $7.00 per e-file after the first 75 and $90.00 per business return. The fee list loads only after a package is chosen, so open it and confirm the amounts before comparing ATX with an all-in rival price.
The vendor's product page as archived on 6 January 2026 listed the 2025 packages at $869, $1,149, $2,619, $3,879 and $6,349, and the copy archived on 16 April 2026 listed the 2026 packages at $939, $1,249, $2,829, $4,189 and $6,859, the prices still on the eShop on 11 October 2026. That is a rise of 8.0 to 8.7 percent per package (Audit Friendly estimate). Over a longer span, a CPA Practice Advisor review dated 18 June 2020 reported MAX at $1,880 a year, so the current $2,829 is about 50 percent higher (Audit Friendly estimate from a reported and a published price). Even so, only 35.0 percent of ATX users named price a top dislike in the 2026 JofA survey, against 64.0 percent across all seven products.
Wolters Kluwer launched TaxWise Online powered by Expert AI in November 2025 (CPA Practice Advisor, 25 November 2025), and its half-year report dated 5 August 2026 says firms continue to migrate from on-premise software to its cloud platforms. The ATX product page as archived on 29 September 2026 names no AI feature, and the ATX eShop page read on 11 October 2026 names none either. The vendor's own ATX user conference on 15 December 2026 closes with a demo of the cloud-based CCH Axcess Tax Essentials. None of this says ATX is being retired, but a buyer who wants AI document intake should ask for the ATX roadmap in writing.
The CCH Small Firm Services refund policy for 2024 tax year purchases allowed a refund within 14 days of the software becoming available for purchases made through 31 December, within 7 days for January and February purchases, and none in early March. It gave no refund once the software was used to create or e-file a return or the registration code was used, and ATX Conversion Services fees were non-refundable. A newer version may exist: the eShop's 2026 terms of purchase point buyers to the refund policy on the ATX support site's legal page, so ask for the tax year 2026 version before paying.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. Searches of the official MCP registry for Wolters Kluwer, Kluwer, ATX and tax preparation returned no ATX server on 10 October 2026, and GitHub searches for an ATX tax MCP server returned nothing relevant. Wolters Kluwer's developer portal offers APIs for CCH Axcess and asks for CCH Axcess credentials; ATX is absent from it.
Scope: There is nothing for an outside agent to read or write. ATX is a Windows desktop program whose returns sit in files on the firm's PC or server, and the vendor documents no API, SDK or data feed for it. The documented data links go to Wolters Kluwer's own products, such as uploading return PDFs to the CCH iFirm Client Portal.
Turnkey: Not applicable, because there is no agent connection to switch on. A firm that wants automation around ATX would have to script the Windows screens itself, which the vendor neither documents nor supports.
Inside the product, the ATX page lists diagnostics, a refund meter and in-line help, and names no AI feature (product page as archived on 29 September 2026); the ATX eShop page read on 11 October 2026 names none either. Wolters Kluwer launched Expert AI document extraction and ID scanning in sister product TaxWise Online in November 2025 (reported), and says about 250 firms had subscribed to CCH Axcess agentic AI modules by mid-2026. Its December 2026 ATX user conference includes a demo of the cloud-based CCH Axcess Tax Essentials, a sign that the vendor's AI investment sits in its cloud products (Audit Friendly reading).
The two-day online event covers tax law updates and a session on tax year 2026 enhancements, updated system requirements and data security. It closes with a demo of the cloud-based CCH Axcess Tax Essentials.
ATX was used by 4.6 percent of 1,808 AICPA respondents. It scored 4.3 of 5 overall and 4.4 for ease of use, and the lowest of seven products for integration (2.9) and importing data (3.0).
The parent's half-year report says about 250 firms had subscribed to CCH Axcess agentic AI modules by mid-year and that North American firms continue to migrate from on-premise software to CCH Axcess. ATX is not named.
A copy of the vendor's page archived on 16 April 2026 showed ATX 1040 at $1,249, MAX at $2,829, Total Tax Office at $4,189, Advantage at $6,859 and PRS at $939, up from $1,149, $2,619, $3,879, $6,349 and $869 in the copy archived on 6 January 2026. The 2026 prices were still on the eShop on 11 October 2026.
Wolters Kluwer launched TaxWise Online powered by Expert AI with W-2 and 1099 extraction and ID scanning, as reported by CPA Practice Advisor. The announcement did not name ATX.
Wolters Kluwer posted two videos on signing in to ATX with multi-factor authentication from a mobile device or a computer. ATX requires a password plus an authenticator app code for every user.
A firm that prepares individual and business returns usually lands on ATX MAX at $2,829 a year (published, checked 11 October 2026). Per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026, it covers unlimited federal and state returns and e-file with the user selector starting at 3. Total Tax Office is $4,189 with a 5-user start, and Advantage is $6,859 with a 6-user start plus two calculation modules, Concierge Care and Conversion Services.
A 1040-only practice can buy ATX 1040 at $1,249 with 3 states and 75 free e-files, then $7.00 per e-file and $90.00 per business return. A low-volume office can start on PRS at $939, which the vendor's archived product page said includes 6 individual returns, and pay $52.00 for each further individual return. The inclusions and per-return fees are from the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026, so confirm them in the cart. PRS overtakes the ATX 1040 price at about 12 individual returns (Audit Friendly estimate).
Budget for what sits outside the package: the cart's processing fee ($56.75 to $119.50), $5.00 per e-signature, $6.00 per prior-year e-file and extra users from $185.00, all per the eShop's package details as read on 10 October 2026, plus Return Retrieval backup at $233 and a quoted price for the Client Portal.
ATX is licensed per tax year under a click-through agreement accepted at installation, and each year's program is a separate product (vendor terms of purchase and support articles). The 2024 tax year refund policy allowed 14 days for purchases through December and 7 days in January and February, and ended the refund right once a return was created. Ask for the current policy before paying.
Client data lives on the firm's own PC or server, so backup is the firm's job; Return Retrieval at $233 adds a hosted copy of the current and two prior years. A vendor support article read on 10 October 2026 said the vendor supports the current year plus five prior years of the program and offers no downloads for years before 2017, so keep installers and PDF copies of older returns.
Leaving is workable. Drake lists a data converter for ATX covering 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120 and 1120S returns, and Intuit lists ATX among the programs its ProSeries data conversion accepts (both checked 10 October 2026). Keep PDF copies of filed returns before switching.
Plan on one to three weeks from purchase to a first practice return, an Audit Friendly estimate based on the vendor's Getting Started steps. The firm does the work itself: download from the Solution Center, install on Windows, enter the activation code, set passwords, pair an authenticator app for each user and add the EFIN.
Prior-year data comes across with conversion utilities from the Solution Center, followed by the Rollover Manager each new season. Assisted Conversion Services are bundled only with Advantage. Payroll Compliance Reporting installs as a separate program, and CCH AnswerConnect and CCH iFirm need their own logins.
Timing matters. Buy and convert in the off season, when phone support runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern on weekdays (vendor support article read on 10 October 2026), and check the hardware first: the ATX 2024 requirements list Windows 10 or 11 with 8 to 16 GB of memory, note that Windows 10 reached end of life on 14 October 2025 and warn that memory needs rise for ATX 2025. Ask for the tax year 2026 requirements before buying hardware.
No. ATX has no public API and no MCP server, and no ATX server is listed in the official MCP registry (checked 10 October 2026). Returns sit in local files inside a Windows desktop program, so an agent has nothing to connect to.
Wolters Kluwer's developer portal covers CCH Axcess, and its Expert AI features ship in TaxWise Online and CCH Axcess. The ATX eShop page names no AI feature as of 11 October 2026.
Claude can still help around the edges: drafting client letters, checking a return PDF the preparer exports, or researching a question from public IRS material. A preparer has to move the data in and out by hand.
