There are roughly 1,340 live accounting and finance postings across the Los Angeles metro in our index as of late August 2026, and when you sort them by who is doing the hiring, the studios come fifth. Public accounting firms lead with about 75 open roles - BDO alone is carrying 22 in LA, RSM has a dozen, Cherry Bekaert and GHJ are sitting around ten each. Hospitals and health systems come next at roughly 57. Universities and community colleges, about 55. Aerospace and defense, around 37, most of that SpaceX and Northrop Grumman. Everything you would fairly call entertainment adds up to about 24 postings, and Sony Pictures is the biggest single name in that group with seven.

So LA hires accountants like a hospital-and-campus town that happens to have studios in it, and I get why people assume the opposite, because when you picture a finance job in Los Angeles you picture a lot in Burbank. The real market is audit firms, health systems, universities and defense contractors, which is a duller list and a far more durable one, and if you have been firing applications at Warner and Netflix and wondering why the whole damn thing feels like shouting into a canyon, that is most of your answer right there.

What do accounting jobs in Los Angeles actually pay?

Across every accounting and finance posting we track in the metro the median advertised midpoint sits around $95,000, and 1,016 of the 1,340 postings publish a range at all, which is about three in four and unusually generous by national standards. By level the LA ladder runs roughly like this: staff accountant lands near $75,000, senior accountant near $100,000, accounting manager near $120,000, controller near $158,750, and director of accounting near $192,250. Tax runs hotter than the general ledger side, with tax manager postings clustering around $150,250 and tax senior manager around $189,550, which is the busy-season premium finally showing up in the pay data instead of only in war stories about the hell of March.

The jump worth planning your next two years around is staff to senior. That is about $25,000 for what is frequently two or three years of experience and one credential, and it is the fastest raise available to you anywhere in this market. The jumps after it are bigger in dollars and much slower in years, which we pulled apart across the whole ladder in how much each step up the accounting ladder actually pays. And LA money looks great until you price a one-bedroom in Culver City, so run the rent math before you turn down a remote offer at the same number.

Who is actually hiring accountants in LA right now?

Public accounting is the volume employer, and that shapes the whole market. BDO, RSM, Cherry Bekaert, GHJ and the mid-market firms are hiring constantly because they always are, they are hiring at the associate and senior levels, and they will take you with a fresh degree and a plan to sit for the exam. Staffing and consulting shops like Conexus and DLC show up right behind them, which is worth knowing because those postings are real work with real clients even though the title on your badge says something else.

Then it is Prime Healthcare and the hospital systems, then USC and the Cal State campuses, then SpaceX and Northrop. Aerospace deserves a longer look than most job seekers give it. Government contracting brings cost accounting standards, incurred cost submissions and DCAA audits into your daily work, which is genuinely specialized knowledge that follows you around for the rest of your career and pays for itself the moment you switch employers.

About 430 of the 1,340 LA postings carry a CPA requirement or preference, so roughly one in three, and around 264 explicitly describe themselves as hybrid. Fully remote roles mostly do not sit in the LA bucket at all, they sit in the national remote pool, so if location flexibility is the thing you actually care about you want the remote accounting listings rather than the LA ones.

Does the CPA still matter in California?

It matters, and the path to getting one is changing under your feet in a way that helps you. The California Board of Accountancy's guide to the new licensure requirements lays out what AB 1175 does: starting January 1, 2027, a bachelor's degree with an accounting concentration plus two years of qualifying experience gets you licensed, with three units of ethics added to the exam-eligibility requirements and no extra education stacked on top afterward. The legacy path stays open through December 31, 2028, so applicants in 2027 and 2028 can choose whichever road suits their unit count and their experience, and from 2029 only the new rules apply.

The practical read for someone job hunting in LA today is that the fifth year of school stops being the toll booth, and the two years of supervised experience become the thing you are actually buying when you take a public accounting job. That reframes the BDO offer at $75,000 - you are buying licensure eligibility on somebody else's payroll, and they pay you while you do it. We wrote about the national version of this shift in the 150-hour rule finally cracking, and California is one of the states moving fastest.

What I would do

Spend one evening rebuilding your target list from the actual employer data rather than from vibes. Put the five mid-market audit firms on it, put Prime Healthcare and the big systems on it, put USC and the Cal State campuses on it, put SpaceX and Northrop on it, and put the studios on it last where they belong. Then apply directly on those career pages, because the LA market is thick with agency reposts of the same handful of roles, and chasing those is the most quietly infuriating bullshit in this whole job search - it will eat weeks you do not get back.

If you are earlier in your career, take the public accounting seat and treat the two years as tuition somebody else pays. If you are already a senior sitting at $100,000 and stalled, the healthcare systems and the universities are where the manager-level seats open up quietly, and the aerospace contractors will pay you to learn a specialization nobody can take away from you. For broader context on how LA stacks up against the rest of the country before you commit to the rent, our breakdown of the highest-paying cities for accountants is the honest version, and the California EDD labor market data for Los Angeles County is the official one.

Frequently asked questions

What does an accountant make in Los Angeles?

The median advertised midpoint across accounting and finance postings in the LA metro is around $95,000, with staff accountants near $75,000, senior accountants near $100,000, accounting managers near $120,000 and controllers near $158,750. About three in four LA postings publish a pay range, because California requires employers to include a pay scale.

Who hires the most accountants in Los Angeles?

Public accounting firms, led by BDO, RSM, Cherry Bekaert and GHJ, post the most accounting and finance roles in the metro. Hospital systems, universities including USC and the Cal State campuses, and aerospace and defense employers such as SpaceX and Northrop Grumman come next. Entertainment employers are a much smaller share than the city's reputation suggests.

Do you need a CPA for accounting jobs in Los Angeles?

Roughly one in three LA postings asks for or prefers a CPA, so two thirds do not. The credential matters most for public accounting, controller and director-level roles, and it reliably widens the range of jobs you can apply for rather than being a hard gate on the whole market.

Is it hard to become a CPA in California now?

It is getting easier. Under AB 1175, from January 1, 2027 a bachelor's degree with an accounting concentration plus two years of qualifying experience will be enough for licensure, removing the extra fifth-year education requirement. The existing pathway stays valid through December 31, 2028, so candidates can pick whichever road fits their situation.

Are there remote accounting jobs in Los Angeles?

Fully remote accounting roles are generally posted to a national remote pool rather than to a specific metro, so searching LA will mostly surface onsite and hybrid work - about 264 of the 1,340 LA postings describe themselves as hybrid. If remote is the priority, search the remote listings directly instead of filtering by city.

Los Angeles is a better accounting market than its own mythology gives it credit for, it just pays you through hospitals and campuses and audit firms rather than through the thing on the billboards, so build your list around the employers who are actually hiring and start applying this week.
