Your First Accounting Job Title Is Worth About $31,000 a Year
Everyone tells new accountants to chase the right city. The bigger money sits in which entry-level title you say yes to, and almost nobody warns you about it before you sign.

An entry-level tax associate in the US posts a median of $77,700. An accounting clerk posts $46,800. Both are first jobs, both take the same fresh graduate, and the gap between them is $30,900 a year before anybody's had a single performance review.

We pulled that from our own early-career dataset as of August 2026, which sits on top of 6,688 live entry-level postings across the six titles most new accountants actually get offered. And the thing that surprised me is how badly the title beats the city. Every piece of advice aimed at new grads is about which market to move to, when the decision that moves your number most is which of these six words ends up on your offer letter.

What do entry-level accounting jobs actually pay?

Here's the ladder, US medians, using the midpoint of every posted range we could read.

Accounting clerk comes in lowest at $46,800 across 304 postings, with the middle half running $40,560 to $53,040. Bookkeeper is next at $49,358 across 310 postings. Accounting associate steps up to $56,992 across 151. Staff accountant, far and away the biggest bucket at 1,990 postings, medians $68,640 with the middle half at $60,000 to $76,990. Audit associate hits $73,158, though on only 26 postings so hold that one loosely. And tax associate tops the list at $77,700 across 351 postings, middle half $67,550 to $87,971.

So the ladder isn't smooth, it's got one enormous step in it. Clerk to bookkeeper is about $2,500. Bookkeeper to accounting associate is another $7,600. Then accounting associate to staff accountant jumps $11,600, and staff accountant to tax associate adds $9,000 more. The two rungs that matter are the ones where you stop supporting the books and start owning a piece of them.

Worth noting how well our bookkeeper number lines up with the government's. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the May 2024 median for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks at $49,210, and we're seeing $49,358 in live postings. Two completely different methods landing $148 apart is about as much validation as you get in this line of work.

Why does the title matter more than the city?

Because the city spread is smaller than people think. Hold the title at staff accountant, the biggest entry-level bucket, and look at what the metros pay: New York medians $79,925 across 104 postings, Los Angeles $75,660, the Bay Area $75,272, Washington DC $72,500, Chicago and Boston both $70,000, Denver $70,125, Dallas-Fort Worth and Seattle both $65,520, Austin $60,320, and Raleigh-Durham $57,200.

Top to bottom that's about $22,700 of spread. The title spread was $30,900. So a staff accountant job in Raleigh out-earns a clerk job in New York, and by a comfortable margin, which is not what the relocation advice on Reddit would tell you.

The counterweight, and it's a real one: that comparison ignores what the money buys. $57,200 in Raleigh and $79,925 in New York are not the same standard of living, and depending on rent the Raleigh job might actually win on take-home comfort. So use the title gap to decide what job to take and the city gap to decide what number to ask for once you've decided where you're living. They're two different questions and people keep mashing them together.

Where does remote fit?

Better than I expected, honestly. Entry-level remote staff accountant postings median $71,000 across 117 listings, which lands above the $68,640 national median and above what Chicago, Boston, Denver, Dallas, Seattle, Austin and Raleigh pay locally. Remote entry-level accounting associate roles run $58,620 and remote bookkeeper roles $52,000, both also above their national medians.

The catch is volume. 117 remote entry-level staff accountant postings against 1,990 nationally means remote is a real option and a small one at this level, because most employers still want a first-year accountant somewhere they can be taught. If remote is the thing you care most about, go look at what's actually posted remote before you build a whole plan around it, and read our rundown of where the good remote accounting roles live so you're not just refreshing the big aggregators.

Is the clerk job a trap?

The honest answer is that it depends entirely on whether you treat it as a floor or a career. The BLS projects employment of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to decline 6% from 2024 to 2034, which is the only accounting-adjacent occupation on their list heading the wrong way, and that's largely automation eating exactly the data-entry and matching work that defines the seat. So going in with a plan to still be there in eight years is a bad bet.

And a clerk job is still a hell of a lot better than no job, especially if you're a career changer or you didn't come out of a target accounting program. It puts you inside a finance team, it teaches you the general ledger from underneath, and every staff accountant posting that says "2 years of accounting experience" is a door that opens for you. The move is to take the clerk seat, learn the close, and get out of it inside two years - use it as a doorway and it works, sit in it and it closes on you.

What I'd do

Take the tax associate job if you can get it, even if tax isn't the plan. It's the highest-paying entry rung by $9,000 over staff accountant, the busy-season pain is real and finite, and the technical reps compound faster than almost anything else you'll do at 23. Second choice is staff accountant, because 1,990 live postings means the most doors and the most portable skill set.

Get the CPA clock moving early either way. The exam pipeline is actually recovering - NASBA reported 87,660 candidates sat for the CPA Exam in 2025, including 36,590 new candidates, which means the shortage story that's been propping up entry-level pay is starting to correct. The licensing route is also getting easier, and we broke down what the new pathways actually mean if you're weighing the fifth year.

And negotiate on the title, not just the number. If an employer offers you accounting clerk at $52,000 and there's a staff accountant seat on the same team, ask what it takes to be considered for the second one in twelve months and get the answer in writing. That conversation is worth more than the four grand you'd win arguing about base. You can see every live entry-level posting, linked straight to the employer's own career page, on the Audit Friendly job board.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest-paying entry-level accounting job?

Tax associate, at a $77,700 median across 351 live US postings as of August 2026. Audit associate follows at $73,158 and staff accountant at $68,640. Accounting clerk sits lowest at $46,800.

How much does an entry-level staff accountant make?

The US median is $68,640 across 1,990 live entry-level staff accountant postings, with the middle half running $60,000 to $76,990. New York leads the metros at $79,925 and Raleigh-Durham trails at $57,200.

Is bookkeeping a good first accounting job?

It's a solid on-ramp and a poor destination. The median is $49,358, close to the BLS figure of $49,210, and BLS projects the clerk and bookkeeper occupation to shrink 6% through 2034. Take it to get inside a finance team, then move to a staff accountant seat within a couple of years.

Do entry-level remote accounting jobs pay less?

Not at this level. Remote entry-level staff accountant postings median $71,000 against a $68,640 national median, and remote bookkeeper roles run $52,000 against $49,358. The constraint is supply rather than pay - only 117 of the 1,990 entry-level staff accountant postings are remote.

Does the city matter for an entry-level accounting salary?

Less than the title does. The spread across metros for the same staff accountant role is about $22,700, while the spread across entry-level titles is $30,900. Pick the job first, then argue about the city.

The first title you accept sets the band every future employer anchors to, and most people pick it based on which recruiter emailed back fastest. Spend one afternoon comparing the six rungs before you accept anything - it's the cheapest raise you'll ever get.
