Stripe Billing runs subscriptions, invoices, quotes and failed-payment recovery inside a Stripe account, for SaaS and internet businesses that want billing and payments in one system and accept a fee set as a percent of billing volume.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Stripe documents a hosted MCP server at mcp.stripe.com with OAuth, read and write tools over customers, subscriptions, invoices, prices, coupons and portal settings, and human confirmation for certain writes (docs.stripe.com/mcp, checked 11 October 2026). Stripe labels the server Public preview, so breaking changes are possible before general availability. Agent-tagged API keys fall under approval rules by default. In-product AI is mainly Smart Retries, which times retries of failed payments; the recovery rates Stripe quotes are vendor-claimed.
Stripe reports 350,000+ companies on Billing and 99.999 percent uptime in 2025, both vendor figures from stripe.com/billing. Docs set a default of 100 API requests a second in live mode and 1,000 meter events a second, rising to 10,000 a second on API v2. Billing supports 135+ currencies. Separate legal entities run as separate Stripe accounts grouped under Organizations, and high-volume usage metering is steered to Metronome at extra cost.
Every core price is on stripe.com/billing/pricing: 0.7 percent pay as you go, 4 annual tiers from $620 to $5,750 a month and 0.67 percent overage (checked 11 October 2026). The cancellation policy states plainly that fees are non-refundable and plans renew automatically. Points come off for stacking: payments, tax, revenue recognition, Metronome and support plans are each priced separately, and volume above $1,000,000 a month is custom.
Stripe's company-wide security page states PCI Service Provider Level 1 certification, annual SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II reports on request and a public SOC 3 (docs.stripe.com/security, checked 11 October 2026). That page does not say which products each report covers, so confirm that Billing is in scope of the SOC 1 report. Two-party approval rules can gate subscription creation and cancellation, credit notes and customer balance transactions, and team roles limit who can issue credit notes. ASC 606 and IFRS 15 reporting needs the separately priced Revenue Recognition product.
A subscription can be created in the Dashboard with no code, and sandboxes and test clocks let a team simulate renewals before go-live (docs.stripe.com/billing/testing, checked 11 October 2026). A Dashboard migration toolkit imports subscriptions by CSV from Zuora, Recurly, Chargify or Chargebee. Complex estates take longer: Intercom's first phase took five months with Stripe professional services, per Stripe's customer story. The NetSuite connector is installed with an implementation partner.
Stripe builds and maintains a NetSuite connector that posts invoices, payments, refunds, disputes and payout deposits at transaction level, and a Salesforce Platform app that syncs Billing objects (docs.stripe.com/use-stripe-apps, checked 11 October 2026). Data Pipeline sends Stripe data to Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, Databricks or BigQuery for a separate fee. QuickBooks Online, Xero and Sage Intacct are absent from Stripe's own app list, so those ledgers rely on marketplace apps, CSV or custom code.
Stripe states that all customers get 24x7 phone, email and chat help, plus a developer Discord server (stripe.com/support-plans, checked 11 October 2026). Paid Growth, Premium and Enterprise plans add a 15-minute critical response SLA; a technical account manager starts at Premium, and Slack access is Enterprise only. Those plan prices are quote only, which makes the true cost of support hard to compare.
Billing covers quotes, subscriptions, basic usage, invoices, a customer portal, payment acceptance, retries, reminder emails and auto-reconciliation of ACH credit and wire payments (stripe.com/billing/pricing, checked 11 October 2026). Stripe's docs say it does not generate or transmit legally compliant e-invoices itself and point to Billit, a partner app. Revenue recognition, tax filing and contract-grade usage billing each need another Stripe product, and credit applications and deductions are outside the product.

Stripe Billing is the recurring billing layer of a Stripe account. It covers subscriptions, subscription schedules, quotes, invoices, a hosted customer portal and automated recovery of failed payments. Stripe says more than 350,000 companies use it (stripe.com/billing, checked 11 October 2026). The price is published: 0.7 percent of billing volume on pay as you go, or annual plans from $620 a month. It needs a Stripe account. It can bill through another payment processor, but Checkout, Smart Retries, recovery emails and dispute handling do not work for those off-Stripe payments.
The fee is a percent of everything billed, and it sits on top of payment processing at 2.9 percent plus 30 cents per domestic card charge (published). Revenue recognition, tax, data warehouse sync and advanced usage billing are separate Stripe products with their own prices. Advanced usage billing now means Metronome, which Stripe acquired on 14 January 2026 and prices at 0.8 percent of billing volume plus event fees on its Startup plan. Stripe's own ERP apps are a NetSuite connector and a payments adapter for SAP's Digital Payments add-on (docs.stripe.com/use-stripe-apps, checked 11 October 2026). A team on QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage Intacct needs a marketplace app or its own build.
Before signing an annual plan, confirm the volume tier in writing. Fees are non-refundable, the plan renews automatically, and downgrades below the starting tier are barred during the term (Subscription Pricing and Cancellation Policy, last updated 1 July 2026). Ask whether Billing Meters or Metronome will carry usage pricing and what Metronome costs at forecast event volume. Get the NetSuite connector quote and the implementation partner named. Request the SOC 1 Type II report before the first audit cycle.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Create products and prices in the Dashboard, then sell through Checkout, Payment Links or a pricing table. Stripe lists flat rate, per seat and tiered pricing among 15+ built-in models. Subscription schedules handle changes dated in the future, such as an upgrade next quarter.
Smart Retries picks retry times with a model, and reminder emails and up to three no-code automations are included in the Billing fee. Payments run through another processor get automations and scheduled retries. Smart Retries and recovery emails are unavailable for them, per Stripe's third-party processing doc.
Stripe's connector creates NetSuite invoices from Billing subscriptions, applies customer payments, books refunds and disputes as credit memos and customer refunds, and reconciles payouts to bank deposits with fees. Onboarding needs a NetSuite sandbox, a dedicated NetSuite user and temporary admin access for an implementation partner.
The Stripe-hosted customer portal lets customers update payment details and manage invoices and subscriptions. It is included in the Billing fee. Portal configurations can be created and updated by API, and by an agent through the MCP server.
Billing Meters records usage and bills it at period end, with up to 100 million events a month included. Stripe now recommends Metronome for new usage integrations; it adds real-time usage visibility, prepaid credits, commits and ramp schedules at a separate price. Stripe's comparison page shows Metronome without Connect, Adaptive Pricing or Stripe Dashboard support.
Connect Claude or ChatGPT to the hosted Stripe MCP server over OAuth. The agent can create subscriptions and invoices and answer MRR questions. Refunds and other gated writes wait for a person, and an unapproved request expires after 24 hours.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
No recurring fee. Billing volume covers Billing transactions processed on and off Stripe and excludes one-off invoices.
Annual subscription paid monthly, labelled a saving of 11 percent. Volume above the tier is billed at 0.67 percent.
Annual subscription paid monthly, labelled a saving of 14 percent. Volume above the tier is billed at 0.67 percent.
Annual subscription paid monthly, labelled a saving of 16 percent. Volume above the tier is billed at 0.67 percent.
Annual subscription paid monthly, labelled a saving of 18 percent. Volume above the tier is billed at 0.67 percent.
Stripe offers custom pricing for companies with large Billing volume or unusual business models. Contact sales.
Smart Retries, automatic reminders, up to three recovery automations, the customer portal, quotes, subscription schedules, invoice auto-reconciliation and Billing Meters with up to 100M events a month.
Per successful domestic card charge, charged in addition to the Billing fee. International cards and currency conversion cost more.
Per ACH direct debit, charged in addition to the Billing fee.
The Stripe-hosted portal is included; serving it from the company's own domain costs extra.
One-off invoices are excluded from Billing volume. Starter is 0.4 percent per paid invoice; Plus is 0.5 percent.
Startup plan: 0.8 percent of billing volume plus $0.04 per 1,000 ingest events. Custom plans add Salesforce and NetSuite invoicing integrations and data export.
Stripe's pricing page defines Billing volume as Billing transactions processed on and off Stripe, excluding one-off invoices (checked 11 October 2026). A company that routes some subscriptions through another processor still pays the Billing fee on them. Payment processing is charged separately at 2.9 percent plus 30 cents per domestic card charge. At $1,000,000 of monthly volume the annual plan is $5,750 a month, about 0.58 percent by Audit Friendly's calculation. Above that volume Stripe quotes a custom price.
Stripe's Subscription Pricing and Cancellation Policy, last updated 1 July 2026, says fees are non-refundable with no prorated refunds on cancellation. Plans renew automatically for one-year terms unless a cancellation is scheduled before the renewal date. For Stripe Billing, downgrades below the initial plan are barred during the term, and upgrades take effect at the next billing period. Volume above the tier is billed at 0.67 percent. Pick the tier from trailing actuals, since a tier set too high stays in place until renewal.
Stripe completed its acquisition of Metronome on 14 January 2026. Its docs call Metronome the primary usage-based billing platform for all new integrations, and a footnote on the Billing page says Metronome is not included in Stripe Billing (checked 11 October 2026). Metronome's Startup plan lists 0.8 percent of billing volume plus $0.04 per 1,000 ingest events, with custom pricing for larger accounts. Stripe's comparison page shows Metronome without Connect, Adaptive Pricing, Workflows or Stripe Dashboard support, and with limited Checkout support. Prepaid credit drawdown, commits and ramp schedules exist only on the Metronome side.
Stripe's own feature list marks ASC 606 and IFRS 15 revenue recognition, tax registration and filing, accounts receivable aging, automated reconciliation, data warehouse sync and multiprocessor payments as available at additional cost (stripe.com/billing, checked 11 October 2026). Revenue Recognition starts at $25 a month and scales with payment volume. Data Pipeline is $65 a month on a monthly plan, and Stripe Tax has its own plans. Model the full stack before comparing Stripe with a suite that bundles revenue recognition.
Stripe's e-invoicing doc says Stripe Invoicing does not generate or transmit legally compliant e-invoice files on its own (docs.stripe.com/invoicing/e-invoicing, checked 11 October 2026). Stripe names Billit as its preferred partner in the App Marketplace, or a team can build a webhook integration to its own provider. Stripe has no native field for Peppol participant IDs and suggests storing them as customer metadata. A company selling into countries with B2B e-invoicing mandates should budget for the partner and test rejections before go-live.
Stripe's list of apps it builds and maintains shows the Stripe Connector for NetSuite and SAP Digital Payments under ERP, plus a Salesforce Platform app and data warehouse sync (docs.stripe.com/use-stripe-apps, checked 11 October 2026). QuickBooks Online, Xero and Sage Intacct do not appear on that list. Those ledgers depend on third-party marketplace apps, CSV exports or custom code. The NetSuite connector is onboarded with an implementation partner who needs temporary admin access, and the free self-serve version only adds a payment link without syncing data.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Stripe documents a hosted Model Context Protocol server at https://mcp.stripe.com, and the public MCP registry lists it as com.stripe/mcp. It is first-party, and official connectors exist for Claude and ChatGPT (docs.stripe.com/mcp, checked 11 October 2026). Stripe labels the server Public preview on that page, a release phase its docs describe as not feature-complete, with some breaking changes expected. The analytics tool and the Treasury tools carry their own preview labels.
Scope: Read and write. Generic stripe_api_read and stripe_api_write tools reach a published list of API methods. For billing these include creating, updating and cancelling subscriptions, creating, finalizing and voiding invoices, marking an invoice uncollectible, and creating products, prices, coupons and portal configurations. Credit notes and subscription schedules are read only on that list. Stripe requires human confirmation for certain writes such as refunds, and an unapproved request expires after 24 hours.
Turnkey: Close to turnkey. A user connects over OAuth and chooses which live accounts or sandboxes the client may reach, with permissions set per environment. An administrator can switch MCP access on or off for the whole team in the Dashboard. Unattended agents use an agent-tagged API key, and from 31 October 2026 the server stops accepting full-access secret keys and untagged restricted keys.
In-product AI is narrower. Smart Retries uses a model to pick retry times for failed payments, and Stripe says businesses recover 55 percent of failed payments on average; that figure is vendor-claimed. A preview analytics tool answers questions such as MRR and churn rate through the same MCP server.
Stripe's 2026-09-30 API release added pausing and resuming subscriptions on demand and made trial offers generally available.
Stripe announced a third consecutive year as a Leader. The Gartner report is dated 12 August 2026.
Stripe introduced streaming payments, which pair Metronome metering with stablecoin micropayments, among 288 launches. Treat it as announced until it appears in the Billing docs.
Stripe closed its purchase of the usage-based billing company and said it would integrate the metering engine with the Stripe Billing platform.
API release 2025-10-29 added Payment Records for invoices and credit notes and a webhook for invoices that need a non-Stripe payment, which supports billing through other processors.
API version 2025-09-30 made flexible billing mode the default for new subscriptions, and Stripe lists the change as breaking. Prebilling for subscriptions appeared only in the preview release of the same date.
Stripe publishes the price. Pay as you go is 0.7 percent of Billing volume. Annual plans paid monthly are $620, $1,500, $2,950 and $5,750 a month for up to $100,000, $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 of monthly Billing volume, with 0.67 percent on any excess (stripe.com/billing/pricing, checked 11 October 2026).
A SaaS company billing $250,000 a month would pay $1,750 a month on pay as you go, or $1,500 a month on the annual plan, which is $18,000 a year. That is an Audit Friendly calculation from the published rates. Card processing at 2.9 percent plus 30 cents per charge is extra, as are Revenue Recognition, Stripe Tax, Data Pipeline and Metronome.
Pay as you go has no term. Annual plans run one year, renew automatically, are non-refundable and cannot be downgraded below the starting tier mid-term, per Stripe's Subscription Pricing and Cancellation Policy (last updated 1 July 2026). When a plan ends, the account moves to pay-as-you-go pricing.
Customers, subscriptions and invoices are readable through the API and Dashboard exports, and Sigma or Data Pipeline can query or export Stripe data for a separate fee. For card data, Stripe says it will transfer an encrypted export to another PCI DSS Level 1 processor on request. Payment credentials saved through Link are excluded from that export (docs.stripe.com, checked 11 October 2026).
Stripe publishes no standard timeline. A simple catalog can go live from the Dashboard with no code, and sandboxes and test clocks let a team rehearse renewals and payment failures first. Audit Friendly estimates 2 to 8 weeks for a single-entity SaaS company, based on Stripe's own examples.
Larger moves take longer. Stripe says NVIDIA migrated its subscriber base in six weeks and called it the fastest-ever migration to Stripe Billing (announced 7 May 2025). Intercom's first phase took five months with Stripe professional services, and all its subscription customers were on Stripe by October 2025. A CSV migration toolkit imports subscriptions from Zuora, Recurly, Chargify, Chargebee or an in-house system.
The customer's engineers do the work, with Stripe professional services or a partner on larger projects. Finance should own the product catalog, dunning rules and ledger mapping.
Yes, with limits. Stripe hosts a first-party MCP server at mcp.stripe.com, and official connectors exist for Claude and ChatGPT. Stripe labels the server Public preview, so tools and behavior can still change. Over OAuth, an agent can read and write customers, subscriptions, invoices, products, prices and coupons (docs.stripe.com/mcp, checked 11 October 2026).
Controls are built in. Stripe requires a person to confirm certain writes such as refunds, administrators can disable MCP access for the whole team, and agent-tagged API keys fall under approval rules. Credit notes and subscription schedules are read only on the published method list. From 31 October 2026 the server rejects full-access secret keys.
