Vena is Excel-native budgeting, forecasting, reporting and consolidation software on the Microsoft stack, for mid-market and enterprise finance teams that want to keep Excel as the front end over a governed central database.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Vena's trust page (checked 30 September 2026) states SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II audits performed by Deloitte, AES 256-bit encryption, SAML SSO, MFA and IP restrictions, and hubs in Canada, the US or the EU for data residency. Its security page lists cell-level audit trails with version histories and rollbacks, and the consolidation launch (26 August 2026) adds period locking and entity-level security. ISO 27001 is cited for the AWS and Azure data centers only; Vena names no ISO certificate of its own.
Vena's support page publishes maximum first-response times: 1 hour for Severity A on Standard and 30 minutes on the paid Premium plan, with Standard covering 24 hours a day, Monday to Friday. A dedicated Customer Success Manager comes with both plans. Capterra shows a 4.6 customer service rating across 139 reviews (read 30 September 2026); 24/7 phone help for Severity A and B needs Premium.
Vena keeps the full Excel front end over a relational and in-memory OLAP database (central database page), with driver-based plans and what-if scenarios. Workforce planning carries employee-level salary and benefit logic for US, Canadian and UK payroll taxes, and consolidation handles intercompany eliminations, FX translation and ownership structures (26 August 2026). Three-statement links depend on how each template is built.
Vena MCP Server is hosted, first-party and generally available since 13 May 2026, with 8 documented tools over models, dimensions, hierarchies, report data and transaction and operational tables (developer docs, checked 30 September 2026). Every tool reads; the MCP FAQ says saving back runs through the Excel template add-in. In product, Planning Agent is GA and Scenario Agent is listed as coming soon; speed-up figures are vendor-claimed.
Vena's integrations page lists NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, SAP, Acumatica, Xero and Dynamics 365, plus Salesforce, HubSpot, Workday, ADP, Snowflake, Redshift and BigQuery. The Business Central connector is documented as a direct integration on the Business Central API v2.0, and six Microsoft Fabric connectors, including Dynamics 365 F&O, went GA on 6 November 2025. The page does not say which other sources use Vena-built connectors versus Fabric pipelines or flat files.
Vena's professional services page states implementation in 8 to 12 weeks, delivered by Vena consultants; partners such as Endeavour, Northexis and McCoy & Partners publish Vena demos on YouTube. Excel templates shorten user training, but template mapping, CubeFLEX dimensions and ETL setup need a trained admin. A sandbox is included only in the Complete plan (pricing page, checked 30 September 2026).
Vena announced its 2,000th customer on 24 July 2025 and cites OEG consolidating more than 90 entities and 19 currencies (press release, 26 August 2026). It publishes no model, dimension or member limits, so ceilings cannot be checked from public pages. A Capterra reviewer (30 March 2025) reports slowness when many users work on large reports, which is the first thing to load-test.
Vena's pricing page names two plans and three seat types (Power User, Contributor, View Only) and marks which add-ons cost extra, including the Export API, but shows no prices. The only public contract benchmark found is Vendr: a $34,286 median annual contract across 34 deals (checked 30 September 2026). Renewal terms and implementation fees are not published.

What you are really buying is a governed database and workflow layer under the Excel your team already uses. Templates stay in Excel. Data lives in Vena's cube, CubeFLEX, with cell-level audit history and role-based permissions. Around that sit workforce, CapEx, cash flow and sales planning, a standalone consolidation product (generally available 26 August 2026) and AI agents that run in Excel and Microsoft Teams.
The catch is price and scale visibility. Vena publishes plans and seat types but no numbers, and Vendr's public page puts the median contract near 34,300 dollars a year across 34 deals (checked 30 September 2026). On the Professional plan the sandbox, Vena Insights, Premium Support and the data Export API all cost extra. Reviewers report slow templates and reports when many users hit large models at once. The MCP server is real and generally available, but every tool reads, so Claude can analyze a plan and cannot change it through MCP.
Confirm in writing before signing: the price of each seat type and plan, a renewal cap, the Export API fee, which source systems get a Vena-built connector versus a Fabric pipeline or flat file, what the 8 to 12 week implementation covers, and how MCP will authenticate if you enforce SSO (Vena's docs say Force SSO blocks it).
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Vena Financial Consolidation went GA on 26 August 2026 and covers intercompany matching and eliminations, FX translation, ownership structures and top-side adjustments. Period locking and entity-level security sit on top. Ask for a reference with an entity count close to yours.
Vena's workforce templates calculate FICA, FUTA, SUTA and 401(k) plus Canadian and UK benefits, and track hires, terminations, transfers and allocations. HRIS feeds listed include ADP, Dayforce, Workday and BambooHR. Role-based permissions keep payroll detail away from budget owners who should not see it.
With the Vena MCP connector, Claude pulls actual versus budget by department, ranks variances and drills into the transaction or operational table rows behind a number. It works inside each user's Vena permissions. It reads only, so any forecast change goes back through the Excel add-in.
Vena documents a direct connector built on the Business Central API v2.0, with self-serve data feeds and one-click refresh into reports and forecasts. Users can drill from any report to the underlying transactions. Business Central users may qualify for discounted pricing.
Power users own the model, contributors fill in templates through workflows, and view-only users read reports. Every change carries a date, time and user stamp with rollback. The seat mix drives the quote, so price contributor and viewer seats separately.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Vena platform with full Excel integration, central database, workflows, modeling, a Customer Success Manager and Standard Support. The plan card lists Vena Copilot as included, while the comparison table marks Copilot as partly an additional cost.
Everything in Professional plus Vena Insights, Premium Support, a sandbox environment and Expert Managed Services.
Each is marked available at an additional cost on Professional and included in Complete.
Export APIs cost extra on both plans, per the pricing page tooltip.
Import APIs are included on both plans.
Standalone consolidation product, generally available since 26 August 2026; sold on its own or connected to Vena planning.
Vena's pricing page (checked 30 September 2026) shows plans and seat types but no numbers. Import APIs are included, while Export APIs carry an additional fee on both plans. The sandbox, Vena Insights and Premium Support also cost extra on Professional. Put the export fee in the order form, because it sets the cost of leaving later.
Vena's MCP FAQ (checked 30 September 2026) says the server supports read-only capabilities, with saving back handled by the Excel template add-in. A Vena admin must copy the regional server URL and a Claude or ChatGPT owner must add a custom connector. MCP is not supported when Force SSO is enabled, so SSO shops need Vena passwords or application tokens. In Claude in Excel, users must name the connector in the prompt for it to run.
A Capterra reviewer (30 March 2025) cites slowness when many users view or work on large reports in the same session. Vena publishes no model size, dimension or member limits to plan against. Ask for a load test on your largest template during a simulated budget week before signing. Capterra still rates Vena 4.5 of 5 across 139 reviews (read 30 September 2026).
A McMaster University guide for Mac users (January 2024) has them install the Vena Contributor Connector from the Excel add-in store, a contributor-focused path. Vena's own pages checked on 30 September 2026 do not state whether model building and administration work on a Mac. If any model owner uses a Mac, ask Vena in writing which tasks need Windows Excel.
Vena Financial Consolidation became generally available as a standalone product on 26 August 2026. Earlier, Gartner placed Vena as a Niche Player in its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Financial Close and Consolidation Solutions, per Vena's newsroom (23 March 2026). Vena cites OEG at more than 90 entities and 19 currencies. Ask for a reference on the new product with your entity count and ownership structure.
Vendr's Vena guide (checked 30 September 2026) reports annual price escalation clauses of 3 to 7 percent at renewal (reported). Vendr also reports that buyers who negotiate caps save 10 to 20 percent over three years (reported). Vena publishes no renewal terms. Ask for a fixed cap or a CPI link in the order form.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Yes. Vena announced Vena MCP Server as generally available on 13 May 2026 and documents it on developers.venasolutions.com. Vena's regional hubs return live OAuth metadata that points to MCP authorization endpoints (checked 30 September 2026). Setup guides cover Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity, and the changelog adds Glean and Microsoft Teams.
Scope: Read only. On 30 September 2026 the 8 documented tools list models, dimensions and hierarchies, pull report data, and query Operational, Transaction and Staging tables; the four table tools were added that day. Report pulls reach up to 50,000 rows since an update posted on 6 August 2026. Vena's FAQ says the server supports read-only capabilities, with saving back to the model handled by the Excel template add-in. Vena's 13 May 2026 release and its integrations page describe updating plans and writing back from Excel, which in practice runs through that add-in. Users see only what their Vena data and application permissions allow.
Turnkey: Admin-configured. A Vena admin copies the regional MCP server URL from Admin, Policies, Model Context Protocol, and a Claude or ChatGPT owner adds it as a custom connector. MCP is not supported when Force SSO is enabled, so SSO customers need a Vena password or an application token. Vena also ships a downloadable Claude skills bundle for model onboarding and common queries.
In-product AI: Vena AI, listed as Vena Copilot on the pricing page, routes requests to Planning, Reporting and Analytics agents in Excel and Teams on Microsoft Azure OpenAI. Planning Agent is GA and Scenario Agent is marked coming soon. Vena's statement that Planning Agent cut budgeting cycles by over 60 percent for preview customers is vendor-claimed.
Who wins for whom: Excel-first teams that want driver-based plans and employee-level payroll tax logic on an OLAP database: Vena. Teams happy to keep driver logic in existing Excel workbooks with scenario cycles layered on: Datarails. Teams that want template budgeting and free-form models with Workforce Pro: Planful.
Excel front end, OLAP cube behind. Vena keeps the full Excel front end over a relational and in-memory OLAP database, with driver-based plans, what-if scenarios and employee-level workforce planning that carries US, Canadian and UK payroll tax logic.
Where it loses: Three-statement links depend on how each template is built, Vena publishes no model size or dimension limits, and a Capterra reviewer reports slowdowns when many users work in large reports.

Your Excel model, with scenario cycles. Datarails maps scenarios, scenario cycles such as 1+11 and 0+12, and Low, Mid and Best planning cases onto existing Excel templates, rolls the forecast forward, and lets budget owners submit numbers from the Excel add-in.
Where it loses: No dedicated workforce, revenue or driver-based engine appears in the product pages or help center, so driver logic stays in your spreadsheets.

Two engines for budgets and scenarios. Planful pairs template and driver-based budgeting in Structured Planning with free-form multidimensional models in Dynamic Planning, adding rolling forecasts, scenarios, Workforce Pro headcount planning, cash flow forecasting and a Microsoft 365 add-in.
Where it loses: The two engines mean two modeling styles and two API families to learn, and CFO Shortlist reports input templates slow down beyond about 400 lines.

Who wins for whom: Business Central or Dynamics 365 F&O shops that want a direct connector with drill-through: Vena. Teams with one to three sources that want actuals refreshing inside existing Excel reports: Datarails. Groups on Acumatica, NetSuite or Dynamics 365 that want pre-built connectors: Planful.
Direct Business Central and Fabric connectors. Vena documents a direct Business Central connector on API v2.0 with one-click refresh and drill-through, has six generally available Microsoft Fabric connectors including Dynamics 365 F&O, and lists NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, Xero and SAP.
Where it loses: The integrations page does not say which sources use Vena-built connectors versus Fabric pipelines or flat files, and pushing data out through the Export API costs extra on both plans.

Scheduled read-only ERP connectors. Datarails' help center documents scheduled connectors for NetSuite saved searches, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Business Central and Snowflake, and actuals flow into existing Excel reports through DR.GET formulas and a Refresh button.
Where it loses: The vendor claims 600+ sources, yet the pricing page includes 1 integration on Professional, 2 on Premium and 3 on Expert, and every documented ERP connector reads only.
Source: AF score rationale: ERP & data connectivity 73; Datarails watch-outs.

Pre-built connectors across mid-market ERPs. Planful lists pre-built connectors for SAP S/4HANA and ECC, NetSuite, Oracle, Dynamics 365, QuickBooks, Acumatica and Sage Intacct, and its NetSuite connector pulls GL and transaction data on a schedule through SuiteAnalytics Connect and SuiteQL.
Where it loses: Xero is not listed, CFO Shortlist reports SAP integration is limited and needs a third-party iPaaS or custom API work, and a single data transfer over 40 MB returns an error.

Vena released its Excel-native consolidation engine as a standalone product covering intercompany eliminations, FX translation and ownership structures. It can run alone or connect to Vena planning.
Vena closed its purchase of Morpheo AI, a data-preparation platform, to build Vena Omega, the context engine behind Vena AI. The deal was announced on 28 July 2026.
Vena made Vena MCP Server and Planning Agent generally available, connecting Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot to governed Vena data. It also announced the consolidation product and a shared data layer with Acterys.
Vena closed its purchase of Acterys, a Power BI write-back planning platform, announced on 3 February 2026. Both products remain on Microsoft Marketplace.
Vena released six pre-built data connectors through Microsoft Fabric, including a Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations connector.
Vena launched Planning Agent in open beta for driver-based plans and scenarios in natural language. Vena claims preview customers cut budgeting cycles by over 60 percent.
Vena does not publish prices. A quote depends on the plan (Professional or Complete), the mix of Power User, Contributor and View Only seats, add-ons and implementation scope.
Vendr's public page shows a median contract of $34,286 a year across 34 deals, with most between $9,343 and $73,500 (Vendr's 10th to 90th percentile; checked 30 September 2026). Vendr's guide on the same page reports first-year totals of 100,000 to 180,000 dollars for mid-market buyers once implementation is included (reported). Budget for both figures until Vena quotes software and services as separate lines.
Vena does not publish contract length or renewal terms. Vendr reports annual escalators of 3 to 7 percent at renewal (reported), so ask for a written cap.
Templates are Excel workbooks, so model logic stays readable outside Vena. Data is a different matter: the pricing page says Export APIs cost an additional fee, while import APIs are included. Negotiate export rights and the export fee before signing, and confirm the hosting hub (Canada, US or EU) for data residency.
Vena states 8 to 12 weeks. Vena's professional services team or a partner builds the templates, data integrations and workflows.
After go-live, a power user on the finance team usually owns the model. Plan for that person to learn template mapping and the CubeFLEX cube, and note that a sandbox for testing changes is included in the Complete plan and costs extra on Professional (pricing page, checked 30 September 2026).
Partly. Vena MCP Server has been generally available since 13 May 2026 and connects Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity to live Vena data. Its 8 documented tools read models, hierarchies, report data and transaction and operational tables within each user's permissions.
It does not write. Vena's FAQ says saving data back runs through the Excel template add-in. An admin has to set up the connector, and tenants with Force SSO need application tokens or Vena passwords to connect.
