Just 0.8% of active accounting and finance job postings mention CPA exam support - 399 out of 53,075 - per Audit Friendly data as of August 2026. Tuition or education assistance does better at 10.0%, about one posting in ten. So a profession that has spent a decade panicking about its pipeline, and still routes most people to licensure through 150 credit hours, offers to help with the bill in about one job ad in a hundred.
We read the full text of every live posting in our Audit Friendly database for this, 53,075 across 20,294 employers, current through August 19, 2026. The answer is more interesting than employers being cheap, and worse.
Very rarely in the job ad. 399 postings name exam support, reimbursement, review courses or exam fees. Tuition and education assistance is broader at 5,286 postings, or 10.0%, and those are not the same promise - tuition pays for degree credits, the exam is fees, review courses and study time on top.
One caveat: this measures what employers write down, not what they offer. Plenty of firms reimburse Becker and never mention it until the offer call, so the benefit is real and the disclosure is shit. Treat every number here as a floor.
This is the part that got me. Split postings by what they say about the license and the pattern runs backwards, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026:
Read the top and bottom lines together. A posting that hard-requires a CPA is less likely to offer tuition help than one that never brings the license up. The employers with the strictest demand are the least willing to fund it, because a hard requirement is a filter - they want you arriving with it, already paid for, on your own dime. Rational hiring, and also the bullshit sitting at the center of every pipeline conversation this profession keeps having with itself.
Give the firms their due on the one thing they fund. Across 2,286 postings from 47 named public accounting firms, 3.3% mention CPA exam support against 0.6% for the other 20,247 employers, over five times likelier. They barely mention tuition though, 2.5% against 10.3% elsewhere. Corporate helps with the degree, firms help with the exam, and neither is common enough to plan a career around.
Share of postings offering tuition or education assistance, August 2026:
The analyst seats at banks and insurers carry the old corporate tuition programs, so a credit analyst is over three times likelier to be offered education money than a controller. The CPA track sits at the bottom. The roles where 30 extra credit hours are a real prerequisite are the least likely to help you pay for them, and that's a damn strange way to run a profession that says it can't find people.
No, and I expected it to. Median advertised salaries within the same role, tuition postings against the rest, 60+ disclosed salaries each side, August 2026: staff accountant $70,000 against $70,000, accounting manager $117,500 against $117,500, senior accountant $92,500 against $91,000. Flat, basically everywhere. Where it moves it moves in your favor, controller at $150,000 against $137,500 and payroll specialist at $70,000 against $64,480, with AR specialist the one exception at $49,400 against $52,000. No perks-instead-of-pay trade is happening here, which makes the benefit close to free money if you can find it.
If you're pre-license, ask in the first conversation, because 9 out of 10 postings won't tell you and plenty of those employers pay anyway. Ask three things - do you reimburse tuition, do you cover exam fees and a review course, and do you give study time. Nobody writes that last one down, and it decides whether you pass.
If you're hiring and your posting says CPA required, you're fishing in the smallest pool in the profession while offering the least help getting into it. One line about exam support costs nothing and puts you in the top few percent of postings we track. The 150-hour rule is finally cracking and states are opening experience-based pathways, so this credential's cost is shifting anyway - the firms that help candidates through get the good ones.
Most don't say so in the job ad. Only 0.8% of 53,075 active accounting and finance postings mention CPA exam support, reimbursement or review courses, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026. Many employers offer it without advertising it, so ask.
About one in ten. 10.0% of active accounting and finance postings mention tuition or education assistance, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026.
Analyst roles. Credit analyst leads at 23.3% and financial analyst at 17.2%, while controller sits at 6.8% and tax manager at 7.6%, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026.
Less often than jobs that don't require one. 6.9% of CPA-required postings offer tuition help versus 10.4% of postings that never mention a CPA, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026.
No. Median advertised salaries are near identical within the same role, and controller and payroll specialist postings with tuition help pay more, per Audit Friendly data, August 2026.
