Payroll platforms calculate pay, file and remit payroll taxes, and produce the year-end forms. They range from self-serve tools for small teams to PEOs that take on the employer filings and enterprise suites that tie payroll to HR.
Ranked by AF Score, highest first.
The rare global employment vendor with nearly its whole price list public: EOR $599 (annual) to $699 (monthly), payroll at $29 and contractors from $29, owned entities everywhere it employs, and a first-party MCP server live since May 2026.
ADP in 2026: RUN for small teams, Workforce Now for mid-market, Lyric HCM for enterprise. Unmatched tax and compliance depth, opaque negotiated pricing, and real shipped AI agents that stay inside ADP's walls.
The enterprise HR and finance system of record. Native payroll in six countries, partner payroll in 180 plus, journal lines landing in the same ledger finance closes, and the deepest agent platform in the category.
Deel is a comprehensive global payroll and compliance solution designed to manage international teams, streamlining the process of hiring, onboarding, paying, and compliance in multiple countries.

Service-first Canadian payroll and HR from Winnipeg. A dedicated rep for every client, 98% retention, deep CRA and Revenu Quebec compliance, 40,000-plus businesses. Priced per pay run via an online quote, Canada-only, thin on AI.

Wagepoint is Canada-only small-business payroll: automated CRA and Revenu Quebec remittances, ROEs, T4/T4A/RL-1 year-end, and clean QuickBooks and Xero exports, run direct or through your accounting firm.

Warp is an AI-native payroll, benefits, and compliance platform for venture-stage startups, built to automate multi-state tax registrations and notices on top of Check's proven payroll rails.

Single-engine HCM with continuously calculating payroll, real US multi-state depth, and best-in-class Canadian tax. Now Thoma Bravo-owned, quote-only, and built for 500-plus headcounts.
Papaya Global runs payroll, EOR, and licensed worker payments across 160+ countries, with client funds held at J.P. Morgan and Citi and one-click NetSuite journal entries. Enterprise-grade, and sold that way.

Justworks is the PEO you can put in a budget model: published fees of $79 or $124 per employee per month, payroll from $50 plus $8, EOR at a flat $599, with 24/7 human support and co-employed big-group benefits.
Gusto is a cloud-based platform designed to simplify payroll, benefits, and HR processes, creating a smooth and efficient experience for businesses of all sizes.

UKG pairs heavyweight payroll with the deepest time and attendance engine in HCM. Compliance and scale are elite; pricing is opaque, implementations run long, and its new AI agents work for UKG's suite, not yours.
Paycom puts payroll, HR, time, and benefits on one database and has employees verify their own checks in Beti before payday. Powerful for close and audit; opaque pricing and a closed API are the tradeoffs.

Paylocity pairs mid-market payroll and HCM with real GL plumbing: native QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, and Sage Intacct journal entries, 50-state filing, and a growing CFO suite built on the $325M Airbase deal.
Mid-market payroll and HCM with benefits-compliance roots, sold direct or through your CPA firm via the isolved Network. Deep multi-state filing, QuickBooks journal sync, quote-only pricing.
The big-company-benefits PEO for white-collar SMBs. Real compliance lift under co-employment, a flat but unpublished admin fee, and a health book that was repriced hard through 2025 and 2026.

Paychex is a robust cloud-based payroll, human resources, and benefits outsourcing platform serving small to midsize businesses. It provides comprehensive tools for payroll management, HR administration, time and attendance, benefits administration, and insurance services.
Powerpay is Dayforce's veteran Canadian small-business payroll: strong CRA and Revenu Quebec compliance, standout support, and a published CA$25 plus CA$5 All-In plan, but no API and a ceiling near 200 staff.

Payroll that lives inside the QuickBooks ledger, rebranded QuickBooks Workforce in July 2026. Unbeatable convenience for QBO shops, with new per-employee pricing, mandatory auto-tax, and a real scale ceiling.

Rippling is a unified workforce platform where payroll, HR, benefits, IT, and spend run off one employee record, posting dimension-mapped journal entries natively to QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, and Sage Intacct.

Humi is a Canadian all-in-one HR, payroll and benefits platform for SMBs, now owned by Australia's Employment Hero. Real CRA and Quebec compliance, but HR plans turned quote-only (payroll stays published at CA$7 per employee) and the agent story is thin.

The general ledger and everything that posts to it: bills, invoices, bank reconciliation and the month-end close. The range runs from free small-business books to multi-entity ERPs that consolidate subsidiaries in several currencies.
Ranked by AF Score, highest first.
Sage Intacct is a cloud financial management system built for the accounting function itself: a dimensional general ledger, multi-entity consolidation, multi-currency, and revenue recognition, rather than a full operations ERP. It has been the AICPA's endorsed financial management solution since 2009, and it is the system most often cross-shopped against NetSuite by controllers who want finance depth without buying inventory, manufacturing, and CRM they will never switch on. The trade is deliberate: you get a faster, lighter, finance-first close, and you give up the operational breadth NetSuite bundles in.
Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft's mid-market cloud ERP for finance teams that have outgrown small business accounting. Unlike NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Acumatica, which sell by quote, Microsoft publishes Business Central's list price: 80.00 US dollars per user per month for Essentials, paid yearly. It runs the general ledger, payables, receivables, inventory, projects and multi-company consolidation on the Microsoft stack, with a hosted MCP server that lets an AI agent read the ledger out of the box. The trade is the channel: Microsoft sells, implements and supports it through Cloud Solution Provider partners, so the license is the one number a buyer can see up front.

NetSuite is a cloud ERP whose financials core (general ledger, AP, AR, fixed assets, revenue recognition, and multi-entity consolidation) serves as a company's accounting system of record. It is aimed at organizations that have outgrown QuickBooks or Xero and need a real multi-subsidiary, multi-currency close and reporting in one platform. Unlike a payroll app you switch on, it is a broad system you license as a base plus modules plus user seats, and most companies implement it with a partner.

QuickBooks Online is Intuit's cloud accounting platform for small businesses, the default general ledger for millions of US companies and the bookkeepers and accountants who serve them. It handles the core small-business accounting jobs (bank feeds, invoicing, reconciliation, sales tax, 1099s, and financial statements) and sits inside the largest accountant and third-party app ecosystem in the market. It is sold as a per-tier monthly subscription, with separately priced add-ons for payroll, payments, and time tracking.
Acumatica is a mid-market cloud ERP sold only through resellers and licensed on transaction volume rather than per user, built for multi entity companies that run operations as well as a ledger.

Xero is a cloud accounting platform for small businesses and the accountants who serve them, sold per organisation with unlimited users, published US pricing, an official open source MCP server, and no consolidation inside the ledger.

Rillet is an AI native general ledger and ERP for multi entity B2B SaaS, fintech and healthcare tech companies that have outgrown QuickBooks, pairing native ASC 606 revenue recognition and consolidation with a first party MCP server that lets an agent such as Claude read and write the ledger under the connected user's own permissions.
Light is a Copenhagen built, AI native ERP that runs multi entity, multi currency finance on one live ledger, deriving each entity's local statutory book and the group book from the same transactions across 21 countries, and it is aimed at multi entity scale ups and mid market groups replacing a legacy ERP or a stack of single entity accounting tools.

Zoho Books is Zoho's cloud accounting application for small businesses, sold in six published US plans from free to 240 dollars per organization per month on annual billing, with revenue recognition, approvals, period locking and a first party MCP surface that most tools in its price class lack, one organization per legal entity, and no consolidated statements inside the product.
Digits is an AI native accounting platform that runs its own general ledger for United States small businesses, startups and the accounting firms that serve them, with automation aimed at bookkeeping and the month end close.
Puzzle is an AI native general ledger for United States startups, small businesses and the accounting firms that serve them, pairing parallel cash and accrual books with agents that draft the month end close for a human to approve before anything posts.
Campfire is an AI native ERP that runs the general ledger, revenue recognition and close for venture backed software companies, replacing QuickBooks or NetSuite with a system where an in house accounting model drafts the entries and the finance team approves them.
FreshBooks is a Toronto-built invoicing and time-billing platform for freelancers and service businesses that added double-entry accounting reports, bank reconciliation and manual journal entries on its Plus tier and above, sold as published monthly tiers capped by billable clients rather than by users.
Wave is a free double entry ledger with invoicing for US and Canadian solo operators and micro businesses, owned by H&R Block, that earns its money from a 19 dollar Pro plan, per transaction payment processing and a payroll subscription.

Tools that sit on top of the ledger to run the close: checklists, reconciliations, consolidation and SEC reporting. Buyers are usually controllers at companies with several entities or a public filing deadline.
Ranked by AF Score, highest first.

Workiva is a connected reporting and compliance platform where accounting, audit, risk, and sustainability teams draft, control, and file high stakes documents: 10-Ks and 10-Qs with XBRL, SOX documentation and testing, audit workpapers, board decks, and ESG or CSRD disclosures. Its core trick is linking: a number lives in one governed place and flows to every document that cites it, with a full audit trail. It is licensed per solution on a quote only basis, and more than 85 percent of the Fortune 1000 use it (published), which tells you both how good it is and roughly what it costs.
BlackLine is the enterprise financial close and controls platform: account reconciliations, close task management, high volume transaction matching, journal entry, intercompany, and variance analysis, sitting as a governed layer on top of one or more ERPs rather than replacing them. It is bought mostly by large, SOX-heavy organizations (about 4,260 customers and roughly 390,000 users, including 1,300 plus companies running it alongside SAP), licensed module by module on quote-only enterprise contracts, and implemented with a partner. Since late 2024 BlackLine has been rebuilding itself around the Studio360 platform and the Verity AI agent suite, and now markets itself as an agentic financial operations platform.

FloQast is a close management platform built by former accountants that organizes the month end close instead of replacing it. It layers a shared close checklist, reconciliation tie outs, flux analysis, and compliance evidence directly on top of the Excel workpapers and ERP a team already uses, and since 2025 it has been shipping auditable AI agents that automate pieces of that work. The buyer is almost always a controller at a mid-market company, and the pitch is speed: live in weeks, run by accountants, no IT project.

Numeric is an AI close automation platform that sits on top of the general ledger you already run, not in place of it. It connects to NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage Intacct and adds the layer above: a close checklist with preparer and reviewer roles, account reconciliations that tie out against live GL data, flux commentary drafted by AI, transaction monitors that catch coding errors during the month, and a cash matching engine the vendor says auto matches more than 90 percent of bank transactions. The buyer is a controller at a venture backed or high growth technology company, and the pitch is not organization but automation: the work gets done by the software and reviewed by the accountant.

OneStream is a unified CPM platform: group consolidation, financial close, reporting, planning and forecasting running on one data model rather than a stack of connected point tools. It is bought mostly by large multi-entity organizations replacing Oracle Hyperion HFM, SAP BPC or TM1, and its Account Reconciliations, Transaction Matching, Journal Entry Manager and Task Manager solutions are where it overlaps BlackLine. It is not a close checklist you switch on. Licensing is quote only, implementation is partner led and measured in quarters, and since April 1, 2026 the company has been owned by the private equity firm Hg, which also owns Prophix, LucaNet and a stake in insightsoftware.
Trintech is a record to report platform that sits on top of your ERP and governs account reconciliation, transaction matching, close task management, journal entry, intercompany, and compliance. It is not a general ledger. The single most important thing to establish before a demo is that Trintech is not one product: Cadency is the large enterprise platform that goes head to head with BlackLine, Adra is a separate mid-market suite on separate architecture with its own developer portal that competes with FloQast and Numeric, and ReconNET, Frontier, and Accurate handle very high volume matching for banks, retailers, and insurers. Which of those a Trintech rep puts in front of you determines your price, your implementation timeline, your API surface, and your ceiling.

A score out of 100 for how well a tool serves a finance team, built from public evidence: pricing pages, filings, documentation, demos and reviewer threads. Each review page shows the dimension scores behind it and the sources for every claim.
When a vendor publishes its price, we show the entry list price and mark it published. When it does not, we show a benchmark from a named source, such as a median of real contracts, and say which. We re-check every price against the vendor’s own pages each month.
We only list a tool once its full review is done, so a category appears here when its first reviews are published.
